On Thursday, June 11, 2014 Amazon updated its Amazon Cloud Player app and renamed it to Amazon Music. One million songs seems to be anemic compared to Spotify’s claim on 20 millions of global songs count. When you open the new Amazon MP3 app, you get to decide if you want to shop for songs or head straight to the player to play any music that you have in your cloud. If you decide to shop, you can decide after purchasing if you want to save your songs to the cloud drive or directly onto your device.
Here is what the cloud music player looks like after saving your purchases to your cloud drive. Obviously the smart thing here is to attach all of your purchases to your personal Amazon cloud so that you can later download them onto any device of your choosing. Of course the music industry is crying about any method that makes it easier for people to access and listen to their music. So while the platform is a little barebones, it definitely works, it seems pretty consumer friendly pricing wise, Amazon’s landed a solid opening blow in the streaming music wars. Now if they would only automatically link all my previously purchased music to this cloud player I would be really happy.
On a somewhat related note, if the above shots are from Kellex’s phone, he has some seriously bad taste in music. About Droid LifeWe consider ourselves to have the greatest Android community in the world, here at Droid Life. All four platforms share similar updates, and accompany Amazon’s foray into music streaming with the launch of Amazon Prime Music, which initially is only available to US customers. Amazon Prime Music is a new benefit for existing Amazon Prime users, giving them access to over a million streaming songs alongside TV, films and e-books.
To coincide with this launch, Amazon has rebranded its Cloud Player family of apps as Amazon Music, adding support for Amazon Prime Music in US markets.
Version 3 of each app boasts a facelift -- the overall layout remains the same, but the user interface has been refreshed to offer easier navigation.
Despite this improvement, desktop users will find they still have to upload music from their local collection through the web browser -- open the menu and choose More > Import music into your library to do so.
Amazon sells MP3s, often cheaper than the competition at Apple, and with this service it is automatically stored on the Cloud Drive (without using any of your allocated storage). The Cloud Player is very basic, but I decided to show you what it looks like, and give my impression of how it works. The Cloud Player automatically retrieved meta data from each MP3 file, and arranged the songs into a list view, which can be sorted by song title, artist, album, or song length.
Amazon also retrieves the proper cover art for each album, and all albums can be sorted in the Album view. Playing back the songs didn’t take long to buffer, hardly noticeable compared to Winamp, my PC based media player. On the bottom-left of the screen is a CR code which allows you to access your Cloud Player from an Android mobile device. I have been using Amazon cloud player for awhile and have only had one problem: I had to call customer service to reset my player since I had been traveling and at each new IP address it registered it as though I were downloading my music to new devices. Out of the major brands, Google Play offers one of the most versatile free cloud storage for music.
Amazon Cloud Player is a somewhat less useful cloud storage option, not because of its lack of features but because the best features are available when you upgrade to Premium, which of course costs money.
StreamNation is a relatively recent addition the media storage service world, and it has some of the best cloud storage for music around.
My Music Cloud is a simpler service than many on the list, but that simplicity is part of its charm.

Do you have a recommendation for a service that would take my CD collection, rip it, and allow me to stream it? Excellent list- but what about MyMusi.cc?- its a great music storage site with no upload or playback limits.

Amazon launched a cloud music locker and media storage service on Tuesday, giving music fans a way to store their music on a server and access it from any computer’s web browser or an Android smartphone. In addition to the free 5GB (or 20GB with an album purchase) accounts, Amazon Cloud Drive offers several paid options.

Amazon Cloud Drive comes with 5GB of free storage, which is enough for 82 albums by our calculation, assuming you don’t use it for any photos, videos, or documents.
Sure, you can search for all MP3s on your hard drive within the uploader, and try to send them to the cloud in one fell swoop, but Amazon Cloud Drive limits uploads to 2GB so this takes multiple uploads, regardless of your approach. The web browser-accessible version of Amazon Cloud Player performed well in our early testing, allowing the user to create playlists and manage songs with ease.. On the upside, however, this means you don’t have to install any client-side helper applications to eat your RAM on a continuous basis, as happens with other music storage lockers. Once the music is uploaded, you can play them back over the web and create playlists using the Amazon Cloud Player. Users can also download music from Amazon Cloud Drive directly to their Android devices, either over WiFi or a cellular connection. Android owners can try Amazon Cloud Player by aiming their QR Code-scanning app at this image.
Amazon’s offer of a 20GB account with a $20 value in exchange for the purchase of any complete album from Amazon MP3 suggests that Jeff Bezos and company know they have a chance to grab music market share from Apple here.
Update: Having now tested Amazon MP3 for Android Featuring Cloud Player on an Android smartphone following an earlier equipment snafu, we have a few additional observations to report. If you purchase a song from Amazon MP3 on your laptop, you’ll need to sign in and sign out of the app before it shows up. As Amazon claims, it’s relatively easy to download songs from the cloud and onto your phone. So why not just get a web host for like, $100 a year, with unlimited storage and bandwidth, instead of these cloud services? No matter how larger a capacity your Android’s overall storage has, if you are a die-hard music fan, you will probably never be able to contain the entire music collection on just a SD card.
If you are an Android user, you may download Amazon MP3 from the link given below or by scanning the provided QR code to stream or download music files from your cloud drive on your Android device.
And that’s not all; you can upload all sorts of files to your cloud storage through the easy and efficient web interface of Amazon Cloud Drive that allows you to select and upload multiple files at a time. Unlike Pandora, it seems not only to be continuously streaming data, but at a much higher kb rate as well. I have an rooted OG droid that I swap out roms on every month or so (currently running cyanogen mod 7). Compared to existing services like Spotify and Deezer, Amazon’s initial offering is tiny, both rivals claiming more than 30 million songs in their respective catalogs. All users continue to benefit from access to their cloud libraries -- which consist of MP3 purchases, auto-rip CDs purchased since 1998 and music uploaded from computer -- as well as device music.
There’s also added support for library management direct from all versions of the app for the first time, allowing users to delete music from their library on mobile as well as desktop.
Amazon’s new Cloud Drive launched recently, beating both Apple and Google to the punch. But you can also upload your own files to the Cloud Drive to be played back with the Cloud Player. The interface is easy enough to use, with dedicated folders for files, music, photos and video. The songs didn’t quite have the same punch, but this is probably due to the fact that Winamp has a built-in equalizer and Cloud Player does not.
With Google Play you can upload up to 50,000 songs from your computer to the Play cloud servers – and that includes music from other sources including iTunes. You may not be surprised to learn that it is limited to music that you buy from the iTunes Store, but within that framework iCloud is a solid service for transferring songs between your Apple devices (it also works for the newer Windows devices).
However, the basic service still allows you more than a couple hundred free uploads worth of free storage, and is dedicated to music with a focus on Amazon Music services. First, the service and its associated programs are definitely free, and they offer unlimited micromanagement of your songs in what is one of the best cloud music storage options available. The app offers one-click imports of music libraries like iTunes, and allows to stream to any other device you want. Update: However, we understand one can also enable the Cloud Player app by using the web interface, then logging out and back in to the app.
Compared to playing music that lives locally on your device, streaming from the Amazon cloud makes for a less responsive player.
Maybe you do not need to spend too heavily on a large capacity SD card, or worry about getting your device’s limited space consumed by just a handful of albums anyway, because of all the various online music streaming and storage services that are available these days.

If you already have one, simply log in and launch Amazon Cloud Player to begin uploading, downloading and streaming music to and from your cloud drive. The upload progress of each selected file can be monitored and managed by clicking on the see upload details on the global upload progress bar that appears.

A couple of months back, the music player on my droid stopped recognizing most of my music files, other than ones that I had purchased and downloaded in the last year or so. Imagine how beneficial this could be for up and coming local bands to get their music discovered while also getting paid.
It appears as though you have to connect your phone to a computer to upload previously purchased Amazon MP3 tracks to the cloud by pulling from your SD card.
Aside from uploading files for cloud storage, Amazon also added Cloud Player, which plays audio files from the cloud on personal computers and Android devices. You do this through the Music Manager app that Google offers, which can successfully save your songs, playlists, and ratings.
The automatic syncing functions mean that you don’t have to worry your new music showing up on your iPhone or iPad once you buy it.
However, there are Cloud Player apps available across the major platforms with plenty of flexible curation options, so you still retain a lot of control…providing you like Amazon services in the first place, of course. The downside is that they are only available through a Synology server device, which you already need to have (or at least have access to). It can then use music to recommend new songs in the genres that you like or show you what your friends are listening to.
Like Spotify and other apps, My Music Cloud can learn your preferences by seeing what music you play and suggest similar artists or remind you of uploaded songs that you haven’t listened to in a while yet. Get the best deals online and geek out with the latest desktop computers, best gaming laptops, best headphones and the latest gadget news and top product reviews online. To sweeten the deal, Amazon gives you a 20GB account for free if you buy an Amazon MP3 album. Talking of cloud services, Amazon has just recently launched its very own online streaming and storage service for the web and Android devices. You can download or stream your Amazon Music library from the cloud – or play the music you already have on your device. All of my burned in files, that I transfered over from my computer…just became invisible. It has some issues, most of which AG ironed out for near gapless play, although it seems to do a little better when you don’t skip to the next song. Then you can access that music through Google Play via any Android platform or the Web itself.
However, the true music storage service of Apple’s is iTunes Match, which allows you to store music in the Apple cloud from any source and also ties into ad-free iTunes Radio. But if the conditions are right, you probably won’t find better customization options around after installing the various DiskStation Manager and Audio station programs.

The Amazon Cloud Drive service allows you to upload music, videos and documents to your personal Cloud Drive and in conjunction with Amazon Cloud Player, lets you stream your music library on your computer via the web or on your Android device via Amazon MP3.
There are options to download music for iTunes, etc., but as the tutorials show Synology is typically used in a Windows environment.
There are several different plans to choose from, but the free version gives you 20GB of data, not too shabby at all. New users receive 5 GB of free cloud storage, which can be upgraded to 20 GB for a year if you purchase an MP3 album from the Store before the 31st of December, 2011 or for an annual payment of $20. Amazon Prime members can browse, stream, and download from the Prime Music catalog of over a million songs and hundreds of custom-built playlists for free. Poweramp will let me play the music by browsing to the file folders, but the on board player on both my droid and my xoom…only sees the downloaded material. Lean back and enjoy Prime playlists, or add to your library and create the music collection you’ve always wanted.
