Today Amazon has finally brought its Cloud Drive online storage and back-up system to the UK. The cloud storage service has been available in the US for over a year now and UK users will be getting the same 5GB of free space through the service as our US counterparts. Cloud Drive is compatible with both PC and mac and the Amazon Cloud Drive App offers enough storage space for around 2,000 photos, free of charge, while 20GB of storage costs just ?6 a year. All sorts of media, be they documents, videos, music files or images, can be stored and shared through the service.
Let's face it, unless you require terabytes of capacity, no one really wants to pay for cloud storage. Here, we round up 15 different free cloud storage players and look at what you get for your money -- well, your no money. The Partner Marketing Guide lists marketing programs that vendors offer to VARs, providing support, services and capabilities to the indirect IT channel. Amazon has unveiled two unlimited storage plans for its cloud-based storage service, Amazon Cloud Drive, which come at some really great prices. Cloud storage prices are becoming cheaper and cheaper, and we’ve seen Google about a year ago come up with some killer prices, only to be beaten by MediaFire a month later one.
Most people have a lifetime of birthdays, vacations, holidays, and everyday moments stored across numerous devices. Subscribe to TechPPSubscribe to our email newsletter for useful tips and valuable resources.
If using the computer based application, you first just need to sign in with your Amazon Prime account. Drag and drop photos or folders full of photos here and you’ll immediately start backing things up. So you might be wondering at this point if there are ways to manage the files you’ve uploaded.
The two files I’ve highlighted in the image below need to be moved from the root into a different folder. Sharing, Deleting, and renaming all work in the same manner (just check the little box beside whatever you want to modify, then tell the interface what you want to do).
If you want to grab the entire contents of your Amazon Cloud Drive, there’s a button in the desktop application just for that purpose. Hit that button and you’ll be prompted to select a folder to restore the entire contents of your Amazon Cloud Drive.
The web interface behaves the exact same way if I drill into a particular folder and select multiple files for download. I’ve been discussing how to incorporate Amazon Cloud Drive into my photography workflow with my friend and fellow photographer Gabe Dewitt. I’m hoping Amazon adds an option to their desktop application that allows you to sync your photos to your Amazon Cloud drive, similar to Dropbox or Google Drive. Using the workflow I described above, I can optionally have my Lightroom catalog stored in my Google Drive folder (which backs up regularly) and my edits would then be backed up as well. It seems that if you use the desktop app instead of the web interface it loads everything to the root and then you need to move it manually to where you want it. My current position is as a multimedia specialist at DOE's National Energy Technology Laboratory. Amazon on Thursday announced two new unlimited cloud storage plans for Amazon Cloud Drive, enabling users to store an endless amount of photos, videos, movies, music, and files. The lower-tier Unlimited Photos Plan allows for an unlimited number of photos to be stored on Amazon Cloud Drive, alongside up to 5GB of additional storage for videos, documents and other files. I seriously wish Apple would use their billions of nanodollars and just offer free unlimited online storage already. My complaint with this service is that it's NOT like Copy or DropBox, or even iCloud with synced folders that automatically upload anything in it to the cloud and sync to all your devices. Next version of iOS with overhauled notifications, lock screen, Messages, Apple Music, and much more.
Netflix has released the soundtracks for both its popular sci-fi series Stranger Things, and its new musical drama The Get Down, exclusively on iTunes and Apple Music. Sonos is a well-regarded brand known for creating some of the best multi-room home speaker setups, and in late 2015, the company debuted its latest product, a second-generation Play:5. Apple has recently added Australian streaming service Stan to the universal search function on the fourth-generation Apple TV, marking the first third-party service outside of the U.S. Apple might be looking to further expand its presence in Seattle, Washington following its acquisition of Seattle-based machine learning and artificial intelligence startup Turi. The company first made its Cloud Drive Unlimited Storage Plan available in the US around this time last year.
This unlimited storage plan does come with a three-month trial, so those that are interested don’t have to commit to that $60 price point straight away. If you’re in Canada and have Amazon Prime, you already have the Unlimited Photos Plan for Cloud Drive, but if you need that extra storage, the Unlimited Storage Plan is available to you.

It’s remarkable in this modern day and age that some people get surprised when I tell them I ride motorcycles. Amazon Cloud Drive has released its first desktop app, only a few days after the announcement of Google Drive.
To try this out, first and foremost, go to the Amazon Cloud Drive website to register for an account. Go to the Amazon Cloud Drive App download page to download the app for your Mac or PC, click on the link Get the Desktop App. You will be prompted to sign in with your Amazon account, enter your details and click Sign in. After installation, you will see the Amazon Cloud Drive icon at the system tray or menu bar, click on it to open your Cloud Drive. Alternatively, you can upload a file with right click then select the option Upload to Cloud Drive. To access your files from Cloud Drive, you will need to go to the Cloud Drive website where links can be found in the drop-down menu of your Cloud Drive icon.
Overall, There is only limited access to your Amazon Cloud Drive App since file folder integration is not provided. Reproduction of materials found on this site, in any form, without explicit permission is prohibited.
In the physical world, innovators have managed to enable small chips to squeeze in terabytes of storage space, but the cloud holds just as much space, perhaps even more.
The advent of HD and Ultra HD media implies that more storage space is needed to store heavier files.
Both plans are available on a free three-month trial, after which consumers can decide if they would like to purchase the service or not.
Amazon Cloud Drive would certainly see an increase in its user base, with the customers tempted to try the service free for three months. For now, the problem lies in convincing existing loyal customers of other cloud services to shift to Amazon, but the lower prices seem like motivation enough.
She’s particularly interested in wearable technology, how our mobiles can help us to get fitter and ways to introduce mindfulness and meditation into our busy working lives. And, they don’t know how many gigabytes of storage they need to back all of them up. With the two new plans we are introducing today, customers don’t need to worry about storage space—they now have an affordable, secure solution to store unlimited amounts of photos, videos, movies, music, and files in one convenient place. So, from this perspective, what Amazon is offering now is really great, but the question is – do you really need unlimited storage? After all, my personal guess is that those who are already using cloud storage won’t say no to a service which offers a no-limit option.
Those who need just a few GBs will probably turn to Google, while others, like professional photographers and just somebody with a big digital collection, will probably seriously consider Amazon’s new offer. Shooting in RAW format is the preferred method when it comes to taking photos, but as I’m sure you are well aware, these files eat up drive space quickly. You can use the web based interface or you can download and install the application for your computer.
Fortunately it’s pretty easy, whether you want to restore the entire backup or even an individual file.
You can see that the download will be packaged as a zip file, which I can later unzip to the folder of my choosing.
We’ve both come to the conclusion that we are going to upload every photography project to Amazon Cloud. I currently have 100 GB available in my Google Drive, so if my Lightroom catalog exceeds that…well, it might be time to start a new catalog. But if it works (I am not sure about the performance) with Amazon prime, I don’t have to do the local backups anymore. Because when you delete your local copies they will be deleted in the Crashplan backup, too. It’s the only online service that has a reasonable price for the amount of images I have.
The more expensive Unlimited Everything Plan allows for unlimited storage of photos, videos, files, documents, movies and music with no restrictions. The longer they hold out the more chance people will migrate away from their photo ecosystem. I already have unlimited storage with my website, so I can fire up Transmit and back up all my files manually if I wanted to do that. They offered users unlimited storage year-round for $60 a year, and are offering that same pricing to those in Canada as of today.
Alternatively, Amazon is also offering an Unlimited Photos Plan, which lets users store, well, an unlimited amount of photos in Cloud Drive year-round for $12 a year. As you may already know, Amazon has been giving 5GB of free storage since a year ago, but there’s no app available to make Cloud Drive easier to use from the desktop unlike many other cloud storage apps that allow you to access and edit files directly from your file folder. Since this is your first installation, you will see four default folders created with no files in it. While some cloud storage, like Dropbox and Google Drive allow you to access your file directly from file folder and edit any files by simply opening it with relevant software, with Amazon Cloud Drive, you need to download the files first before you can open an edit.

To move these files to different folder, select files by checking the box next to the file name, click drop-down menu More Actions and select Move items to. To change file view between list and thumbnail, click on your choice at the top right corner of the page. In fact, it offers greater flexibility and portability, and there is no fear of losing the data. It seems like a smart move, as it is possible that users would develop a habit of storing things on Amazon after three months of continuous usage. He said that users often do not realize how much space they would require to store all their videos and pictures, not to mention additional media such as music.
Users may also choose to stick to the service as it offers what appear to be the lowest rates in the market. Bidness Etc expects Cloud Drive’s customer base to expand as users shift to what appears to be a viable option.
As a northerner living in London, she loves exploring the city, going to the cinema at every possible opportunity and Instagramming everything that crosses her path. Whether you need a cloud drive for 1 GB or 200 GB, a little sleuthing can usually find a free cloud storage option. But not anymore, as Amazon has come up with an unlimited cloud storage offer that should put an end to all your woes.
At some point you are going to need to either buy more drive space or start backing up all those massive RAW files. Or maybe you can use the storage as a place to store all the RAW files once you are finished editing, keeping only the processed hi-res jpg files locally. You can also upload entire folders by dragging and dropping (though this does not work when using Firefox at the time of this writing). Individual files will retain their file names, while multiple selections or entire folders will be downloaded as zip files.
We both use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for processing, and as you are probably already aware Lightroom never modifies the RAW files. I may also invest in Crashplan – I think having two (or more) backups is a great idea. Amazon Prime members are already provided with an Unlimited Photos Plan at no additional cost.a€?Most people have a lifetime of birthdays, vacations, holidays, and everyday moments stored across numerous devices. Similar to the Unlimited Storage Plan, there is a three-month trial before committing to the subscription. There are only limited actions that can be done with the app, but it will surely make it easier for its users.
In other words, you will require high bandwidth to play around with Cloud Drive since you can’t edit files offline then upload it when you get connected to the Internet. In a world of connected technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), cloud storage has become increasingly important. While Alibaba may have the potential to meet Amazon’s competitive pricing, Amazon is providing customers with a very good reason to shift to its cloud services. However, what remains to be seen is the quality of service and satisfaction the cloud’s users enjoy. What if there was a place to back up all of those photo online, and it had unlimited storage capability?
And, they dona€™t know how many gigabytes of storage they need to back all of them up,a€? said Josh Petersen, Director of Amazon Cloud Drive.
This article will guide you to get yourself familiar with the new Amazon Cloud Drive App and its limitations.
Dropbox for Business is available to consumers for $15 per month for 1TB of storage, with additional space available on request (and likely to cost more). As long as Amazon manages please its customers, the company should enjoy considerable growth. That means that as soon as we return from a photo shoot and have transferred the RAW files from our camera to our computers, we can also upload those files right to Amazon Cloud.
I’ve seen a lot of backup services that advertise how they allow you to backup one computer, with additional computers costing extra.
Once we finish processing the photos, we can upload the hi-res JPG, TIF or even PSD files to Amazon Cloud as well. With the Amazon Cloud Drive, I can install the application on any number of computers, login, and just start throwing photos at it.
There are currently no sync options, so any changes to files will need to be manually re-uploaded.
I’ve also seen some backup services that require you to plug any backed up external drives in at least once a month or they will delete any data associated with that particular drive! If Amazon’s unlimited media storage option is broken down, the service costs just under $5 a month. It also seems to randomly tell me that certain files have not been uploaded when in fact they have been.
And if we are truly done with all of the editing, we can delete the RAW files from our computers and save valuable hard drive space in the process.
