Laughter really is the best medicine: Patient-designed cartoons proven to help those with chronic diseases - but do they make you feel better? She decided to experiment by using cartoons based on patient experience. As a result, researchers used patient feedback to create a series which reflect common experiences, problems and anxieties. The cartoons were incorporated into a guidebook given to patients who have chronic kidney disease. Some patients said the cartoons helped them find the incentive to improve their lifestyles. She said: a€?Cartoons can be challenging and the difficult emotional responses some pictures evoke could be used to help people adjust to their situation, but they can also be used to dispel misconceptions. John King is passionate about the transformation of healthcare and believes effective communications are central to enhancing the patient and family experience, improving the coordination of care and empowering people to better manage their health and well-being.
The following post has no connection to the picture above, but a good friend of Deskarati, Dave Brown, is an expert in the area of moths, so we thought you might like to see him. A female moth sitting on a goal post could attract a male moth on the other end of a football field. Understanding the genetics behind moth communication could lead to natural ways to control pests, said Wanner, who has dual assignments in the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology and MSU Extension. Scientists have studied communication between male and female moths and butterflies for more than a century. They created sketches to address the issues of patients being lazy and storing up problems for the future, making decisions about healthy shopping and about what the term a€?chronica€™ means.
These patients were asked their opinions on the use of cartoons and humour in regular patient information and then asked to evaluate the cartoons. Results showed a range of feelings towards the cartoons including amusement, recognition, hostility and incentives to action. And even if she switched her scent over time, the male could still find her because of a mutation to a single gene in his antenna. A team of researchers led by Montana State University entomologist Kevin Wanner identified that gene after seeing how it adapted to even the slightest change in the chemicals female moths emit to attract males. Scientists could someday design new scents that would make it impossible for male moths to find females of the same species. It is an untapped resource and could be a potential approach to support self-management.a€™Dr Kennedy went on to explain that cartoons are already used in patient information but that the content is usually sourced from health professionals. Overall patients found the cartoons useful in lightening the tone of information and said they gave them insight and understanding they had not had before. The European corn borer alone is one of the most damaging insect pests of corn throughout the United States and Canada.
But they still know little about the molecular mechanics that make communication so specific to a species, Wanner said.

Dr Kennedy says health professionals could use the cartoon approach to help their patients engage more in the management of their own conditions.
The losses it causes and the cost to control it is estimated at more than $1 billion each year. In the meantime, the discovery that involved hundreds of moths, an MSU-University of Montana collaboration, and a vital piece of equipment adds to the basic understanding of insect genetics, Wanner said.
In some cases, different moth species are so much alike that scientists can only tell them apart by their different pheromones. Pheromones are the blends of chemical odors that females emit to attract males of the same species for mating. Apply your passion to the reality you wish to achieve!Alternatively Wasp is letting you know that resistance to change is by definition self sabotage. One area of interest focuses on the genetic barriers that keep moths from mating outside their own species. If the ratio or chemicals themselves change during the evolution of a new species, the male needs to adapt or he won’t be able to find the female. It’s time to allow yourself the notion that all things are possible, and that you deserve to have all your dreams come true. Be the best you can be!If the Wasp is your Animal Totem; You are comfortable in both social situations and on your own. You are an independent thinker who is goal oriented and allow nothing to get in the way of your plans.
You are willing to be expressive with your thoughts – regardless of the sting that is occasionally behind them.
You have a detachment when it comes to romance in your life and more often than not do not commit to long term relationships.
To dream of this insect building her nest is a symbol of productiveness and success in the pursuit of your goals. I tried to warm him by putting him in a box and covering him, thinking if he made it thru the night and it was warm the next morning he could get to the hive. Then another came and I repeated until a larger number was after me and I ran out of spray. I ran in the house, looked out the window and saw that the ones I killed were reviving and began to try and get in the house through windows and doors.
The only thing I can guess is that I have been feeling my life is in complete disarray and nothing has worked out as planned.
I was awoken from my dream by my wife who told me I had been making noises as if to call out. I looked at it and ignored it then about5min later the same bee came and stung me on my eyelid.

When I was a kid I grabbed one and held on tight, not thinking to let go, it stung me over and over again.
Also, with the description above, it fits along well with what I’m currently facing in my life right now. So, I’m ready for these big changes and I have to let go and face life head on and without fear.

Thank you for sharing your story with us all ReplyLavanya on August 27, 2015 at 7:33 amI was boiling water with fresh ginger and spices for a chai mixture when wasp flew into the kitchen.
During the moments of chai brewing my mind was pondering all the plans and projects I have taken on for this year. That is when I realised that the plans and projects, which are most dear and relevant to me, were constantly being pushed into second position in my planning and therefore barely progressing. I also became aware of how little time was left of the rest of the year to bring my vision to completion – especially while considering the amount of volunteer work I have taken up. Therefore, I started mentally phrasing what I need to honestly communicate about myself to others to get out of this cycle of slow personal project progression and Wasp flew in, hovered around me and then headed to the boiling pot of water and, yep, fell in. Like you, there is a project I need to immerse myself in to change my life and our finances ( has to do with learning a new skill, so it involves allot of studying for a few months) and I have been putting it off for months.
Just like your wasp, this wasp was dying so I left it in the bathroom for a peaceful death and thanked it for bringing me the message that I really need to make a move now or else this opportunity will disappear from my life.
I have awoken each day to their buzzing and on each occasion, I have opened the windows to let them out.
I find this very peculiar and after the second time, it struck me vividly that this was some sort of sign or symbol that I should at least research a little into. The associations of fertility, the female warrior, female societies and the importance of thought and reason are major aspects of my personality and desires. I had no glasses on so I didn’t know what it was after being awake for a half hour or so I glanced on the wall beside me and there it was a wasp.
