Looking forward, ten of my SAS colleagues and I are heading to New York City this weekend for KDD 2014: Data Science for the Social Good, which runs August 24-27. Looking backwards, the first KDD workshop was held in 1989, and these workshops eventually grew into the series of conferences.
The SAS story starts with the statistics circle above, when the language was first developed in 1966, multiple regression and ANOVA were added in 1968, the first licenses sold in 1972, and the company incorporated in 1976. I’m looking forward to hearing a keynote on Sunday night by Pedro Domingos (Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington), who is the 2014 winner of the ACM SIGKDD Innovation Award and will be giving the talk associated with that award at the conference. The collaborative filtering-based recommender is prone to the cold start problem and long tail problem, so this demo will show how to derive contextual recommendations using text analysis to address both problems.
We will describe two new algorithms for pattern discovery with a single consequent or external category: Bool-yer and AssoCat. This demo will illustrate the diagram and workflow user interface and also focus on how people can try their favorite R algorithms while taking advantage of data handling and pre-processing capabilities built into SAS® Enterprise Miner. Using a newly developed high-performance Bayesian network procedure (PROC HPBNET), this demo will illustrate the graphic-modeling approach using a real-world data. This demo will show how to develop stratified models based on group-by variables, decision trees to derive segments and enforce business rules, and clustering demographic data followed by supervised models using transactional data. Subconscious Musings is an outdoor sculpture on the SAS Campus facing Research Drive, which is the street where the largest SAS R&D building is located.
From the halls of research and development to the board rooms of customers around the world in many different industries and analytical disciplines, the bloggers on Subconscious Musings will share what’s on our minds and invite you to respond with what is on yours. The blog content appearing on this site does not necessarily represent the opinions of SAS. Analytics, statistics, operations research, data science and machine learning - with which term do you prefer associate? Romeo was from the house of Montague, Juliet, the house of Capulet, and this distinction that meant that their families were sworn enemies. Interestingly, the American Statistical Association (ASA) is host to a very similar debate. Many statisticians assert "Aren't We Data Science?," as Marie Davidian (professor of statistics at NC State University) did in in 2013 in an article published during her tenure as president of the ASA. Trying to wrangle a clear definition of analytics, statistics, data science, machine learning, and even operations research can be as messy as cleaning up a typical data set! These are distinct disciplines, related but not the same. We can parse terminology all day, but instead we should invest our energy in the opportunity at hand and drive towards increased adoption. The important advances in research presented at conferences like the Joint Statistical Meetings and the INFORMS Annual Meeting pave the way for progress that enables success in practice at places like UPS. Polly, I completely agree with your that we should invest our energy in the opportunity at hand and strive for adoption by delivering value. While historians examine and argue over the size, shape and pattern of our foot-steps in the un-named (analytics? When you go to a hardware store and buy a drill, you don't really want the drill, you want the hole that it can make. My training, in the mid 70's consisted of non-statistical methods such as linear programming and statistical methods of queueing theory and Markov chains. Nowadays I walk around saying Data Scientist, Big Data, Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
We should re-visit this topic in another ten years to see what the buzz and jargon will be.
The term "analytics" is widely used now, and there are now many self proclaimed analytics professionals. Mental shield is Bella Swan's raw supernatural force-field that blocks any and all kinds of psychic powers that act on invading the mind, though not necessarily malevolent ones. It is known as one of the most powerful gifts known in vampire history due to its ability to withstand the strongest powers of the Volturi. As a human, Bella considered this power a "glitch" in her head; Edward had teased her that he could only read FM minds, and that she was on AM. This proves useful in Breaking Dawn when she includes her family and friends under it, protecting them from the powers of Jane, Alec, or any of the Volturi guard. While her main shield is pushed out to protect others, a secondary shield is produced to surround her personally, which keeps other vampires' powers from affecting her even if they get under her shield. When Garrett is restraining Kate, she continuously shocks him, and Bella retracts her shield from Kate and wraps it closely around Garrett to protect him; this suggests that if a psychic power is already active, her shield can be projected to effectively block it out.
Renesmee Cullen is so far the only individual to truly penetrate the shield, as she can place thoughts and images in anyone's mind, including her mother's. Bella inherited this power from her father, Charlie Swan, who is also capable of warding off mental powers, though his blockage is very rudimentary and undeveloped compared to Bella's. Edward found himself unable to fully read Charlie's mind, but he dismissed it very quickly, believing that he was just slow on the mind. In Twilight, Bella realizes Edward Cullen's ability to read minds and also that he can't read hers. While neither of them understands the cause, Bella thinks her brain may be wired differently. In the Twilight film, Edward describes the minds he hears to Bella, saying that he can read every mind in vicinity, except for Bella's. In Midnight Sun, Edward describes his inability to read Bella's mind when he first meets her, noting that he hears nothing but silence, which frustrates him. Because of this, he finds her behavior and responses fascinating, but has a hard time locating her when she isn't in eye range and must look into the minds of those who see her.
In mid-New Moon, Bella explains to Jacob Black about Edward and the other Cullens' powers, and about her closed-off mind.
While in the headquarters of the Volturi, Aro reads Edward's mind and notices his inability to read Bella's thoughts. The discovery of her immunity made Bella very desirable to Aro, who likes to collect vampires with special abilities for his coven. Near the end of Eclipse, Jane once again attempts to use her power on Bella, but fails just like before. Bella later asks Alice to explain why she can see her future and Jasper can affect her emotions when other vampires' powers have no effect on her.
In The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, Bree Tanner notices Jane's attempt and failure to inflict Bella with her illusory torment, something that is unusual for her.
In Breaking Dawn, Bella finds out about her gift via Eleazar and Edward 3 months after becoming a vampire. Her power shows maximal potential when Bella frees herself from the subconscious sense of self-preservation, allowing her to extent the shield over an entire field and control it in any way she wishes. At the end of Breaking Dawn, Bella removes her shield to let Edward read her mind for the first time. She expects to be able to improve her removal until she learns to someday be able to pull it back completely. Fred has the ability to induce those around him with a sense of revulsion to drive them away.
Renata has the ability to repel physical attacks, much like how Bella's shield repels mental powers.
Renesmee Cullen Renesmee Cullen shows the ability to penetrate Bella's psychic shield and use her power of tactile thought projection on her—both gifts are opposite versions to those of her mother and father. However, the irony is that you must in large part read them energetically as your conscious mind can only pick up on so many details. When reading emotions, realize that what others say or how they appear frequently don‘t match their energy.
Sense people’s presence – This is the overall energy we emit, not necessarily congruent with words or behaviour.
Notice the feel of a handshake, hug and touch – We share emotional energy through physical contact much like an electrical current. Listen for people’s tone of voice and laugh – The tone and volume of our voice can tell much about our emotions. The problem was that Todd was a super-smooth operator and my raging hormones were blinding me.

This event’s full name is the 20th Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, but it is more commonly known as ACM SIGKDD, or just KDD for short. Whether you still call it data mining, or prefer machine learning or data science, the fact that this year the conference is sold out, with the 2,200 registered exceeding all expectations, is a sign of the trending of this topic.
SAS moved into the data mining and machine learning circle early, when in 1982 the FASTCLUS procedure implemented k-means clustering. I found his paper A Few Useful Things to Know about Machine Learning to be an excellent resource. Etzioni look to the future, my own colleague Zheng Zhao will give a paper he co-authored with our fellow SAS peers James Cox and Jun Liu on “Safe and Efficient Screening For Sparse Support Vector Machine” in the Feature Selection Research Track.
In addition to talking about the products SAS offers for machine learning, we will be talking about our new SAS Analytics U initiative, which includes SAS® University Edition, a free, downloadable version of select SAS statistical software that runs on PCs, Macs, and Linux and is designed for teaching and learning SAS. If you didn’t register in advance you’re probably out of luck, since the conference is sold out.
That sculpture and street have inspired the title of this blog, which will represent the internal musings and perspectives of Radhika Kulkarni, Advanced Analytics R&D VP, and her colleagues at SAS.
The play is a tragedy, because by the end the two lovers end up dead as a result of this long-running feud. More recently David Donoho (professor of statistics at Stanford University) makes a similar but complex argument in a long-form piece, "50 Years of Data Science," which he released last fall (after a presentation on it at the Tukey Centennial workshop). Increasingly analytics is used synonymously with data science, which is derived in large part from statistics, which also is a foundation for machine learning, which relies upon from optimization techniques, which I’d argue are part of analytics.
Some of these buzzy terms get people’s attention and provide an incredible opportunity to use mathematically-based methods to make a significant impact.
We need academics and other researchers to continue to invest in advancing the unique approaches of their disciplines. There were too many terms to cover them all, but I know plenty of INFORMS members who lament the gradual disappearance of that term, because they feel it does the best job of all of illustrating to a non-technical audience that there are ways to apply "science" to business. With the help of Eleazar, Kate, and Zafrina, Bella learns to gain some control over it, eventually coming to include a number of other individuals in her shield at the same time and protect them from psychic powers. She also learns to remove it to allow mental powers to work on her, as seen at the end of the story when Edward reads her mind. This obstacle mainly comes from her subconscious desire to protect her mind above all else. She describes this as being much more difficult than pushing it out, as it struggles to protect her and it takes all of her concentration to make it disappear altogether. Its greatest flaw being the inability to repel a physical attack; an intruder can walk through it directly to attack. Alice Cullen's clairvoyance allows her to see the outcomes of decisions already made, which probably relate more to the flow of time than to the minds of individuals. The inheritance is presumably passed down through their similar personalities as they are both known to be loners, socially awkward and prefer to keep their thoughts and feelings to themselves.
He also notices that Bella's father, Charlie, has a similar mind, though not completely closed off. Alice answers that her power is to see the future affected by people's decisions, but not the thoughts and reasons behind them; and Jasper can actually manipulate people's emotions. She also notices that Jane is smiling to hide her frustration and realizes that Bella is somehow immune to her power. With the Volturi approaching to end the Cullens, Bella spends most of her time learning to fight and to harness her shielding power. This proves useful when Chelsea, Jane and Alec attempt to use their powers on the Cullens and their allies, and find their powers thwarted. However, she realizes the removal is much more difficult than extending, and must concentrate wholeheartedly to be able to remove it completely from her mind.
His power is more limited in that he can only shield himself and can be seen through by sharp focusing. I LOVE sleep, and I share Joy’s happiness when I get to sleep in, or catch up on some sleep. After Riley falls asleep on the couch while watching a horror movie, her subconscious is sent into a state of chaos, and her memories go flying all around Imagination Land.
To complete all 25 levels successfully, learning to switch between the characters is a must.
You might remember him from beloved shows such as Sex and the City , where he played Trey, Charlotte’s first husband or from How I Met Your Mother, where he played The Captain. Although they did film all of the stuff that I was doing just to capture the physical gestures and mannerisms and a little bit to incorporate I think in the role or in the drawings. While people can control what they say fairly easily, their energetic vibration cannot be faked because it is largely controlled by the subconscious mind, meaning that it is a direct reflection of their personal emotional energy. This means being able to tune into your intuition to readily understand and read someone’s energetic vibration, although there are a few things that can be gleaned from simply observing how someone talks, acts and carries themselves in an overarching sense.
Judith Orloff, a pioneer in this field and an excellent writer to boot, does a wonderful job of explaining and elucidating this skill below. Our eyes transmit powerful energies, what the Sufi poet Rumi calls “the glance.” Just as the brain has an electromagnetic signal extending beyond the body, studies indicate that the eyes project this too. It enables you to see past fantasies or desires to pinpoint someone‘s motivations by sensing invisible messages they give off.
We provide valuable information and resources to help individuals raise their level of consciousness, and improve their overall well-being. KDD’s tagline today is “bringing together the data mining, data science, and analytics community,” so this nexus is right where SAS has played for years.
But while there’s more to this history, I’ll save it for another post and return to a forward-looking view.
On Monday morning Oren Etzioni (Executive Director of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, from the same department at the University of Washington) will give a talk on “The Battle for the Future of Data Mining,” which certainly will inform my forward-looking view. In this paper, a novel screening technique is proposed to accelerate model selection for SVM and effectively improve its scalability.
We'll also be giving away some copies of our colleague Jared Dean's new book, Big Data, Data Mining, and Machine Learning: Value Creation for Business Leaders and Practitioners.
But I plan to blog again after the conference and will offer some impressions from the event, as well sharing some more history about SAS, data mining, and machine learning, continuing with my backward and forward looks. Here, we plan to discuss all things related to the advanced analytics that solve so many of the challenging problems facing business and organizations today.
Shakespeare's Juliet derides excess identification with names in the famous play, Romeo and Juliet.
Statistics, data science and machine learning are but a few of the "houses" that feud today over names, and while to my knowledge no deaths have resulted from this debate the competing camps have nearly come to blows. There’s a whole wing of data science practitioners who are downright hostile to statisticians. While the numbers may have shifted I doubt they have yet converged into a clear definition or consensus among members.
These days I observe increased cross-fertilization, like my operations research peers clamoring to attend machine learning conferences and machine learning talks that are standing-room-only at the Allied Social Sciences Annual Meeting (where the economists gather). Last year my friend Jack Levis accepted my invitation to give a keynote at an analytics conference SAS hosted. I'm more comfortable now with the designation of "data scientist" which emphasizes this underlying philosophy.
I remember one member commenting that no one understands when he says he does OR but described this way they get it. It also made her very desirable to Aro, who likes to collect vampires with special abilities for the Volturi guard. She can manipulate it in any way she pleases, either by wrapping it around her targets like plastic or turning it into a giant dome.
Once she learns to let go of that desire, she gains complete control over it, able to shape it in any way she pleases (even wrapping it around her targets like living plastic), though it takes concentration to make it work properly; even to make it follow the movements of those she protects. Since the shield is constantly active, she needs to concentrate fully to be able to remove it even for a few seconds. Also, if the intruder has a supernatural talent, then once he is under the shield, his power will work effectively against anyone behind it as well as those outside of its protection, except for Bella, who has a second shield specifically designed to protect herself. Edward, unable to suppress his amazed feelings and love for her, kisses Bella, causing her to lose concentration.
Beau is able to block out Edythe Cullen's power of telepathy as a human; and this anomaly is presumably heightened to the same level as his female counterpart's by his conversion to vampirism.
Since his power only makes others think he is invisible, this power most likely works on a mental basis.
Nothing makes me angrier though than a bad night’s sleep next to a snoring monster or just a sleepless night. The pillow features premium memory foam blended with natural lavender oil, which creates a supportive, plush feeling pillow with the natural benefits of Lavender oil. If they have to make their way through the clouds, Sadness could carry Fear, or if they have to go through a collapsing bridge, Fear could pick up Sadness instead. By integrating her extensive knowledge on this topic, you will be able to develop some pretty sharp intuition that will allow you to get a solid energetic handle on anyone you come across.

It‘s crucial to get a clear read on this aspect of anyone you plan to regularly interact with. As a psychiatrist, I‘ve observed how people go to great lengths, purposely or not, to appear in certain ways—either to impress, say the right thing, or sell you on something—but this “self” isn‘t aligned with their true emotions. In fact, research reveals that people can sense when they‘re being stared at, even when no one is in sight—an experience reported by police officers, soldiers and hunters. When heart is present you‘ll feel the warmth of unconditional love emanating from others which makes you feel safe and at ease.
I was once attracted to a man, a successful financial manager who knew exactly what to say to melt my heart.
I confused his seductive energy with heartfelt caring and was horribly susceptible to the charisma he wielded so well. If you would like to contribute to our growing community, please contact us using the form at the top of the page! It will be interesting to hear where he thinks the field is heading, and where the battles will lie. The emergence of big-data analysis poses new challenges for model selection with large-scale data that consist of tens of millions samples and features. In the booth on Monday and Tuesday we will also offer what we call superdemos, which are 15-minute long demos on focused topics. This camp makes assertions like "sampling is obsolete,” due to computational advances for processing big data.
There will always be naysayers - 6% of the membership surveyed at the time thought there was no relationship between OR and analytics, and for that matter there are statisticians who see no association with data science or analytics at all. He spoke about ORION, the OR project he leads at UPS that Tom Davenport has said is "arguably the world's largest operations research project in the world." While few of the conference attendees likely understood in great detail the operations research methods employed, all were amazed at the impact his team has had on saving miles, time, and money for UPS, happily tweeting their excitement during his talk.
It also works as one-way glass, allowing the powers of the shielded individuals to work undisturbed. This comes in handy when she removes Kate from her shield while still protecting Garrett as Kate attempts to shock him with her gift. If Bella is attacked while trying to shield someone, her shield will automatically recoil, leaving her charges defenseless.
Lavender has been used for centuries as a sleep aid and has been shown to promote relaxation and sleep quality.
All of the frustrations and challenges a parent faces while their child grows up in front of their eyes is summed up pretty well.
Then, you can decide whether a relationship is feasible based on your energetic compatibility.
Consider these examples: your spouse apologizes for blowing up but her hostility still lingers.
Reading energy lets you attune to how you relate to people, who you feel comfortable around and who you don‘t. To compare extremes, think of the Dalai Lama‘s light, compassionate presence versus Charles Manson‘s deranged darkness. Below an audible range, sound can be felt (think of a bass’ vibration.) When reading people, notice how their tone of voice affects you. Todd was from the country club set and much too conservative for my taste—I often fall for wild, creative men. This technique can precisely identify inactive features in the optimal solution of an SVM model and remove them before training. Popular blogger Vincent Granville has even said "Data Science without statistics is possible, even desirable," extending the obsolescence to statisticians themselves. In making his case, Donoho also points to subsequent essays by John Chambers (of Bell Labs and co-developer of the S language), William Cleveland (also of Bell Labs and arguably the one who coined the term data science in 2001), and Leo Breiman (of the University of California at Berkeley). Does it really matter what we call it, if people value what was done, want to share the story, and pave the path for adoption through their enthusiasm ? Bella mentions that she can sense the individualistic life-force of each person under her shield, since they somehow become part of her.
Sleep plays a big role in all aspects of life, not just physically, but also emotionally; and our emotions shouldn’t get in the way of a great night’s rest. This pillow also features ventilated channel technology to ensure maximum breathability, and is molded not to ensure consistency and durability. It is sure to be an emotional roller coaster for a lot of families as well as the perfect opportunity to bond and bring up some emotional topics about feelings. To avoid bad relationships and regrets, you must let go of trying to convince yourself of anything the body‘s intuition doesn‘t affirm.
I needed to sort them through before I could read him from a neutral place which at that time was light years away. Experimental results on five high-dimensional benchmark data sets demonstrate the power of the proposed technique. INFORMS member and self-described statistical data scientist Randy Bartlett, who is both a Certified Analytics Professional (the CAP certification offered by INFORMS) and an Accredited Professional Statistician (the PSTAT certification from ASA), has written about this statistics denial in an excellent series of blog posts he publishes from his LinkedIn page. These gentleman together argue for addressing a wider portion of the lifecycle of analysis, such as the preparation of data as well as its presentation, and the importance of prediction (and not just inference). If it leads to the expansion of OR I don’t care if this application of operations research is referred to popularly as analytics, because after all, in the words of the bard, "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Each of the historic disciplines has a chance to have not only a bigger slice of the pie but a bigger slice of a bigger pie if analytics is embraced at large.
In the case of shape-shifters, a cascading effect has been observed: shielding an Alpha ensures the protection of the entire pack.
Sleep, or a lack of it, definitely impacts our emotions, so I bring great JOY in giving you the chance to win $5,000 by entering Mattress Firm’s #SleepEmotions Contest!

Experience has taught me that it‘s pointless to work with a patient or form a friendship if such basic rapport isn‘t there. Is their grip too strong, even crushing your fingers, indicating aggression or over control? Our heart presence builds through our good intentions, deeds and emotional work to overcome fear and negativity. We could discuss anything from politics to the nature of the universe and he‘d speak to me in an appreciative low tone of voice I melted around (I‘m very responsive to sound). In the face of such direct attacks on their profession it is no wonder the ASA felt a need to take a stance.
I understand the value and pride in disciplines like operations research and statistics, and their contributions to data science and machine learning, which are the knowledge base analytics draws upon.
In battle, Bella needs to be protected from physical attacks in order to keep her shield around her allies. When identifying how you energetically respond to others always ask, How does my body feel? Still, from the start, when I looked into Todd‘s eyes, I had the oddest feeling—there was no “there” there. The purpose of reading energy is to become more empathic by sensing the nuances of different personalities. Today, a man from the office walked beside my desk and I almost jumped because I felt something like an invisible hug in my back. Though the molecular structure of subtle energy isn‘t fully defined, scientists have measured increased photon emissions and electromagnetic readings about healers who emit it during their work.
Also determine: is there someone at home in their eyes, indicating a capacity for intimacy? Some hugs and handshakes impart kindness, joy, and calm whereas others feel clingy, draining, even hostile. Are they a soft-talker or mumbler whom you can barely hear, signs of meekness or low self-esteem? To break Todd‘s spell, I had to grasp that what excited him most was not to love me but to have power over me.
In this panel discussion, we will explore these topics in a session with some of the leading thinkers in both OR and Analytics. The houses of Capulet and Montague can celebrate their unique heritage but put an end to their feuds. Of course, we all have quirks, anxieties, and fears, but energy cements your bond with others and motivates you to work through the rough spots.
Ultimately, the energy transmitted by someone’s smile and presence tells the truth about where they’re at. Be sure to attend to have your questions answered on these highly complementary and valuable fields.” This was the abstract for a panel at the INFORMS Annual Meeting last year that included two past presidents of INFORMS and other long-time members. Nevertheless, healthy relationships have a momentum that carries them, a surrender that feels more natural when you‘re both in sync. In practical terms this means: you want to marry someone who increases your energy not drains it, regardless of how perfect he or she looks on paper. I really wanted to surrender to my romantic feelings for Todd, to explain away the niggling truth his eyes conveyed, though I knew I ignored this red flag at my own peril. To many long-time members of INFORMS this abstract was provocative indeed, because not all embrace of the term "analytics" to describe what they do. Instead of feuding let us learn more, put that learning into practice, and make the world a better, smarter place. Most people aren‘t being intentionally misleading—often they don‘t know what they feel or project. I kept wracking my brains, “What could he possibly be getting from this.” Slowly, I came to understand that he got off on the rush of being in control.
Also see if people look anchored in their bodies, indicating their feet are firmly planted on the ground. In retrospect, I‘m grateful to have learned this lesson about power versus love from a perfect teacher.
I‘d surrendered to the wrong thing, to what I wanted, rather than what I “saw.” However, being human, sometimes I have to keep making the same mistakes until I finally learn. In addition, FBI profilers interpret a quivering voice and sudden change in pitch as potential signs of deception.
