When I purchased my first home, I couldn’t wait to decorate it, replace the kitchen and bathroom, and then fill it with furniture and knick knacks to make it look lived in and cosy. I might also add that I couldn’t actually afford all this stuff, but that’s a story for another day. When I ended up moving house and had more rooms to fill and things to replace, I realised that I simply couldn’t go out and spend several thousands of pounds on home furnishings.
So I looked at other options such as getting hold of cheap second hand furniture and making my own furnishings.
Before you decide to throw out those worn old sofas into the nearest skip, have a think about recovering them. Local auctions, car boot sales, eBay, Gumtree and Freecycle always have a range of second hand furniture and electrical items on offer for cheap or even free of charge. DIY stores such as B&Q, Homebase and Wickes often have bargain basements and as well as finding cheap treasures such as screws, lamps and even furniture in such places, you may also find some cheap paint. A new kitchen can cost anywhere between ?1,000 to ?20,000, depending on the size of your kitchen and the type of design.
If you’re lucky enough to have wooden floorboards under a tatty old carpet and battered underlay, why not make the most of them by sanding and varnishing them?

Thanks Lorillia – I imagine getting someone who loves crafts to make a few of these bits might not be all that expensive, especially if you source the materials yourself. I also love the wall art idea and of course anythign second hand or repurposed is great in my book!! Most Britons could do with an income boost, whether that’s to help pay the household bills or save up for a well-needed holiday. And with the Office for National Statistics showing that real wages (average earnings after inflation) fell by an average of 2.2% a year between the start of 2010 and January 2014, the need for extra cash is becoming more and more urgent for many. For most of us, however, taking a second job to improve our earnings simply isn’t on the cards. But there is one asset that many people own which, with a relatively small amount of work and some imaginative thinking, can be put to good use to help with the family fortunes: Your home. Your house might have a good deal of extra space that you don’t really use; perhaps a garage or other outbuilding, or at least a spare room. You could rent this out as storage space (storage is a growing business in the UK) to people who are moving, have business reasons and need a ‘lock up’, or simply own too many things for where they live. One of the quickest and easiest ways to make extra cash is to rent a room, or rooms, to a lodger.
Under the Government’s ‘rent a room’ scheme you can make up to ?4,250 from letting out a room without having to declare it and pay tax. And if the idea of having someone around all the time is too much, consider a Monday-to-Friday lodger only.
Remember that you need to tell your insurer, as your home cover may need to be adjusted to take the new member of the household into account.
With parking space hard to come by in many towns and cities for commuters and other workers, renting out a driveway is becoming an increasingly popular way of making extra cash.
It’s also being done by those living near airports as an alternative to what can be fairly expensive airport parking. If you live in central London, you can charge a small fortune for your drive (hundreds, if not thousands of pounds a month!), but for most, between five and fifteen pounds a day might be achievable.
Many people look for a more ‘authentic’ experience when they go abroad, and staying in someone’s home is one way of achieving it. From luxury bedrooms in grand old houses with breakfast served every morning, to tiny room shares and studio flats, people offer all sorts of accommodation and you can make good money. In a town or city in the UK with a decent level of tourism, anywhere between ?25 and ?100 might be achievable for many, depending on position, type and standard of accommodation. Listings are free, and you can ‘vet’ guests by checking other people’s comments about them. From old DVDs, CDs and books, to televisions, bicycles and even cars, people’s attics, sheds and spare rooms are often crammed full of stuff that’s no longer used or needed. If you open an eBay account you could be making good money selling all or some of it within days. And if you don’t fancy putting the effort in, some people now make a living out of selling other people’s ‘junk’ by doing all the work involved for you, in return for a cut of the profits. EBay calls such individuals ‘trading assistants’ and has a directory of them to help you find someone local to you (look under ‘Trading Assistants Programme’ on the EBay site).

Chuck it all out (you definitely don't need that case of clothes left over from 2007's 'new rave' era anymore) and rent out the space to other people for way cheaper than professional storage places.

This has meant that getting the stuff I wanted for my home has taken time but I appreciate what I have got now so much more than before. Even a simple throw blanket makes all the difference but if you’re any good with a staple gun you could try your hand at re-upholstery. It’s just a case of looking around and perhaps waiting a while to find exactly what you’re looking for.

People often buy custom mixed paint only to find that when they get home the colours aren’t what they thought they were. Keeping the original carcasses for the kitchen cupboards and just buying new doors is a great way to save money.
If you have a sewing machine (or know someone that does) then such tasks will be easier and curtains, cushion covers and roman blinds are pretty simple to make.
They should be easy to keep clean and they make a lovely original focal point for the home. Yet it’s possible to make your own rugs without shelling out a small fortune using your old t-shirts and duvet covers.
Flowers can be expensive and seasonal depending on your taste, but you could always go out and pick local growing wild flowers such as daisies, daffodils and poppies from nearby parks and fields. It’s like tinted polyurethane, it bonds to existing finishes but adds some color as well.
It’s amazing what a difference just sprucing up the kitchen cupboards can make to the overall look of the room.
I’ve done that before- the greatest part is you can literally pick out materials that go with your home decor. Pre-made items are generally more expensive too as well as being difficult to match up to home decor. I was looking through Craigslist free section and you could literally furnish a small home or apartment with some nice stuff without spending any money…except for the gas (petrol) it would take to pcik up the furniture. You can charge more if you like, but you would have to declare the extra earned on top of the tax-free limit. It’s amazing what people will buy and also how much you might make once you’ve totted up everything you have that you’d like to get rid of. My cats destroyed my fabulous chocolate ostrich leather sofa and my cream leather chairs that went so perfectly well with my glass dining table. This is a great opportunity to find some paint which can spruce up your rooms for a fraction of the normal price. Better still, repainting doors and replacing handles can give your kitchen a great value facelift. From trinkets to ornaments to furniture to fabrics: you can buy pretty much anything at a car boot sale. I stapled a sheet of cheap material to a plywood frame to make this fabric panel which complimented our internal decor.
Yes, it’s a long task but thoroughly enjoyable and there will be no other rug out there like it once you’ve finished. Great suggestion re Craigslist – I really need to get onto that site and check it out a bit more. I never got to the bedroom set though, so I am in the middle cobbling together and re-painting some old pieces to at least have a common theme in there. These services can be everything from retweeting a link 20 times, photoshopping Instagram pictures, creating a logo, help with tax returns; the whole lot. In this detailed article, I am going to tell you various legit ways to earn money through Internet. There are lots of them all over the UK mostly during the Spring season right through to Autumn.
You'll be amazed at what people will pay for, although advertising the fact that you're willing to call someone at midnight and sing an a cappella version of Taylor Swift's Trouble as a lullaby probably won't be all that successful.
Us either, even though it does seem like a very good idea we've been thinking about for like, ever.
I’m going to be making another one soon seeing as I’ve recently had to sell a beloved painting and need to fill the space! DePop is the Instagram-style way to sell your old clobber to a fully-formed audience of fashion-forward (ugh sorry, couldn't think of any other way to describe them short of using the word 'fashionista') ladies ready to splash their cash on your old gear.
Bascially, everyone hates transcribing their own audio files (mainly because listening to yourself on tape is up there amongst the cringiest things ever) but doing other people’s can often be pretty interesting. Make up to £2 a minute by transcribing other people's stuff (if you get really good you can do 30 mins in around 45 mins).
