WATERLOO REGION a€” A leading member of the regiona€™s tech sector hopes the CityAge conference, scheduled for the CIGI campus in Waterloo and the Tannery in downtown Kitchener, becomes an annual platform making this region more attractive to employers and employees alike.
Iain Klugman, the chief executive officer of Communitech, said the CityAge conference is a great way to have conversations about big ideas that impact the economic future of the region. Featuring about 30 speakers and panellists, CityAge: The Innovation City, will be held Oct. The theme of this CityAge conference is creating a technology supercluster running from Waterloo Region to Toronto.
This innovation corridor is second only to Californiaa€™s famed Silicon Valley when it comes to the number of tech jobs a€” about 380,000 in Silicon Valley and 280,000 between here and Toronto. A top priority for this regiona€™s tech sector is faster, all-day trains to and from Toronto.
But Klugman hopes the CityAge conference will broaden the traditional understanding of infrastructure beyond roads, water, sewer and electricity.
That all-day train to and from Toronto remains the single, biggest piece of hard infrastructure the tech sector in this region wants.
CityAge is a platform for ideas and business that was co-founded by Miro Cernetig, a former journalist and filmmaker, and Marc Andrew, who had a career in public policy. A good umbrella brand allows the entire region to shine a€” the collection of heritage architecture in the Galt section of Cambridge, the Tannery in downtown Kitchener and the riverside charm of St.
As BlackBerry tries to reinvent itself with new products and services, the time is ripe for a regionwide branding, he said. At last yeara€™s conference, an unspoken theme was the economic blow the region was about to endure as BlackBerry shed jobs. Glen Murray, who was Ontario's transportation minister until an election call earlier this month, has laid out an ambitious plan for rail expansion in southern Ontario - including money-making, low-cost high-speed rail. A proposed high-speed rail link between Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo and London would see 56 trains a day, or 28 each way, with fares around $40, according to Glen Murray, Ontario's Transportation Minister until the election call.

In an exclusive interview with CBC News, Murray said the high-speed rail service can be completed within 10 years, and would cost between $2 to $3 billion, which is part of the $29-billion infrastructure fund announced by the Liberal government in their spring budget. Murray is basing his figures on a study by independent transit consultant First Class Partnerships, based in London, England.
Murray said Metrolinx, the authority that manages transit in the GTHA, may not be the operating agency of the high-speed rail link, although they are involved in route planning. Murray also confirmed that a new rail line would need to be built between Kitchener and London.
The high-speed rail link is the third step in a three-step process Murray described to CBC News. The Union Pearson Express is the rail link between the airport and Union Station in downtown Toronto that is slated to open in the summer of 2015.
Toronto-based transit advocate Steve Munro is skeptical of Murray's plans for high speed rail. It is also a big supporter of the light rail train system now under construction in Kitchener and Waterloo. Thata€™s how a good marketing brand works, so when you get out there, you are selling all of you and all of your attributes,a€? Cernetig said. If you're someone who's living in London who's going to the airport at the last minute it will be more expensive.
According to that study, the net cost to the government for capital investment on high speed rail would be about $500 million, once fare revenues have recouped the investment, though the total cost is not specified. So we expect the net cost over the next 10 to 15 years would be about $500 million a€” at least, that's what the experts say," he said.
He suggested that the Ontario Ministry of Transportation would likely operate the line, but the decision had yet to be made on who would operate it.

We want to protect farmland so we want to make sure we use a highway or road corridor that would have minimal impact on farmland and communities. The first step, already announced by the Liberals, is to increase GO trains between Kitchener and Toronto to 4 trains each way per day by 2016.
It's not clear whether Murray's proposed fare would include the section of the line from Pearson to Union, or if that cost would be additional. Metrolinx has yet to confirm the fares, but it's expected a one-way adult fare will be between $20 and $30. Because then you can do a basic reasonableness check of the operating costs of the new service versus whatever they're running today, like GO transit," he said. People from outside this area do not see Kitchener and Waterloo as an entity but rather as two small towns, Cernetig said. The unemployment rate here remained below provincial and national averages as BlackBerry shrank to about 2,700 employees here, down from a 2011peak of about 11,000. But that is all work that would be done in the next 2-3 years with the environmental assessment," said Murray.
The second step is to move to two-way, all-day GO service within five years, according to Murray, and then complete a high-speed link in 10 years. Please note that comments are moderated and published according to our submission guidelines.
