When you are given writing assignments at the University, you will usually need to include the ideas of others in your writing, and to show clearly that you are doing so.
So, by citing and referencing sources you not only acknowledge the work of others in your assignment, you also demonstrate that you are becoming part of the ‘academic conversation’. Read the following paragraph (click it to enlarge) from an academic text and look at the ways in which the author incorporates information from sources (using APA style).
If you cite a work in your text, then you must include a full reference to that work in a reference list at the end of your assignment (see the example above). Scholars from different disciplines have different expectations about citation and referencing style. An in-text citation is when the writer references the originating author in the actual body of the essay. A works cited page is an alphabetized list (generally by the author's last name) of all referenced materials used in the body of the essay. Use an Author Tag: An author tag is when you use the author's name somewhere in the sentence. If the author's name is not known, type the title of the article instead of the author's last name.  Some titles are very long and can be cumbersome in the body of the essay. MLA In-Text Citations provides more information for particular situations, such as when a work has multiple authors, or is a reference book.
As mentioned before, a works cited page is an alphabetized list (generally by the author's last name) of all referenced materials used in the body of the essay.
MLA List of Works Cited provides more examples and information for situations such as multiple authors. The APA citation for a document obtained over the Internet will be similar in format to a comparable print document with some elements added and some omitted. The title of the web site, italicized, unless it is part of a larger recognized site, such as a periodical, etc.
Web information that includes the date of retrieval, as well as the unique URL of the site. The following APA reference is to a typical image that might be used in a PowerPoint presentation or as a visual aid in a speech. APA style dictates that personal communications, including e-mail, and non-scholarly messages from newsgroups, listservs and online forums or discussion groups, be cited in the text of the report rather than in the references list.
Any message you receive from a newsgroup, online forum or discussion group or listserv that has scholarly value and has been archived, ie., is retrievable, should be included in the Reference List and cited as follows.

The Modern Language Association formatting and style guide in the updated editions of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition. Naturally, you would need a computer to write your document and then have it printed on a white bond paper, short size at 8.5 x 11 inch. After every period or any punctuation mark, leave only one space unless specifically instructed to do otherwise by the instructor.
In numbering your pages, make the numbers appear in the upper right-hand corner, flushed right and placed half an inch from the top of the paper.

For the first page, list on the upper left-hand the following: your name, the name of your instructor, the course and then the date. You only use quotation marks or even italics when you are citing other works in your title. If your instructor requests for pagination, you can create a header on the upper left-hand corner bearing your last name, space, and the page numbers in Hindu Arabic numbers (e.g. The title page is often optional and not counted in the total page count for page 1 must always contain the text of your document. Again, the samples above are not the official format for the MLA title page since the MLA format does not require one.
The importance of headings for every section or chapter of the document is to enhance readability. The general rule in creating sections within an essay is to number the sections with a Hindu Arabic number followed by a period (.), a space and then the name of the section. There is no strict MLA format for section headings within a book as long as these are grammatically consistent and clear. For online sources, the MLA format for cited works does not require a URL just as long as the source can be easily found or retrieved. The reference list provides the information that is needed by a reader who wishes to locate the text that you have cited.
This citation is always located just after the quoted, paraphrased, or summarized material.
Following the author's name, there is a series of information that more specifically details the reference.
Next, if a page number is available, type the page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence.
When you don't use an author tag, cite the information by typing the author's last name and page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence. Every in-text citation refers readers to the complete documentation of the source in a Works Cited page at the end of the paper.  You do not need to include works that are not cited in the body of your essay.
If the site does comes from a periodical, include the name of the periodical, italicized, followed by a volume number, also italicized, if available. The Fifth Edition of the APA manual did not issue an official format to follow for Internet audiovisual sources; this example is as similar as possible to the original source format with the addition of the Internet information.
All 12 should agree on guilt, but the penalty phase should be a simple recommendation to the judge who could impose the appropriate penalty (Wooten).
A formatting style like the MLA paper format allows your readers to easily understand your writing by placing necessary cues like the MLA heading as guide and making the right citations as support and tool for further study. There is no strict rule on the font as long as the regular and italics style make a sharp contrast for proper distinction of the titles or headings and it must be in 12 point size. It may be easier to use the Tab key instead of moving the Space Bar in five notches, just make sure that the Tab is set at half an inch.
No need to italicize, underline or use quotation marks but only follow the standard capitalization rule similar to citing titles in your MLA works cited page. For example: Anti-Feminism in George Bernard Shaw’s Candida or Literary Satire in “The Perfect Wagnerite”.

For this reason, the formatting for the title page is often dictated by the instructor, which you need to follow to get the grade you desire. The section heading guides readers as to the topic of that particular portion of the book and make comprehension easy. If you use a lengthy section heading in the beginning of your book then using short phrases on succeeding headings will not be consistent.
One is within the text using a parenthetical citation containing the author’s last name and the page number or just the page numbers when the author’s name is indicated in the text.
The in-text citation is simple, generally including the author's last name and page number.
The documentation for non-print Web sources must include the format of the source within brackets. In writing based on the MLA format is similar to putting a map so that your readers will not get lost and can easily follow your thoughts especially when your document proves to be technical and lengthy. Nonetheless, you will see a sample below as to the general practice in making a MLA title page as illustrated in Figure 2 and 3. If you have a title page, then the succeeding page or the official first page will look like this. Section headings are not different from outlines, which follow grammatical rules in phrasing for consistency and clarity. The other is the bibliography containing a more detailed information for easy retrieval of the sources for further study. Clearly, an author's last name is not enough information for readers to know exactly where the outside information came from. It should be noted that when a title page is required, the first page makes an adjustment by omitting the usual header that bears your name. You will need to omit the details that are already included in the title page and you may need to position your title 1 or 2 inches down from the top of the paper or per instructor’s direction. For multiple level headings in every section, it is best to consult with your instructor or create one that is easily followed and understood. The primary distinguishing mark of the MLA format for works cited is in explicitly indicating the type or medium of publication used, which is either in print or from the web. This is why writers need to include a works cited page at the end of all researched essays: the in-text citation references something more fully listed in the works cited page. As a general rule, use the same font and font size that you used in the text for your title page.
Moreover, there is no need to italicize or specially mark your titles unless you are citing a work like in the samples below.
