August 15, 2016 by Anne Weaver Leave a Comment A length of pretty ribbon and some hardware are all you need to make a lanyard! While I’m going to use my Cowl Neck Tee pattern to show you how adjust the pattern and add the ruched the side seams, you can use this information on pretty much any knit shirt pattern you have.
Lengthening a pattern is as simple as cutting and spreading the pattern, but first you need to figure out how much you need to lengthen it.
Once you have your pattern marked,  you just use a flexible tape measure to measure the length of the curve between the two marks. To lengthen the pattern just cut a straight line across the pattern piece somewhere in between the two marks for the elastic.
When you do this, it’s a good idea to use a straight edge of some sort to make sure your pieces are lined up.
Once I had the pattern spread and all lined up I taped it down to my table to keep it in place. Now that you have one pattern piece nice and lengthened, you need to do the same with the other pattern piece. Once you have the elastic cut, mark off the original measurement on it somewhere in the middle. Now I really liked the way this looked, but I wasn’t quite thrilled with how it felt. To use elastic thread to ruche the side seams you prepare the pattern and sew up the shirt the same exact way as above.

Thank you, was trying to find different options for ruching and how each might produce different results. I’m guessing that on a purchased shirt (uniform) I would determine where I want the hem to fall and measure the distance up to the sleeve.
Lay the t-shirt out on a flat surface and cut off the sleeves, making sure to leave the seams attached as this will make your bag stronger. Next, turn the t-shirt inside out and use the pins to close the hemline and make sure that both sides line up straight.

You just have to lengthen your pattern so that you have the extra fabric to gather (unless of course you want a crop top) and then you sew the shirt and gather the seams. In the Cowl Neck Tee pattern, there is a line provided for lengthening so I just cut across that.
I cheated here and instead of cutting and spreading all over again, I just traced the neckline of the regular pattern piece and then traced the side seam and bottom hem of the lengthened piece. The original length you measured on the pattern is how long your elastic is going to be when you are all finished. Line the top mark of your elastic up with the top mark just under the underarm point of your shirt.
Then you just load a bobbin with elastic thread and sew using a regular straight stitch from mark to mark.
I can’t feel the elastic at my sides, just the comfortable feeling of soft gathered knit fabric.
I really should have done that before when I was making the skirt, but at least I know now. Our photographs have all been released into the public domain, which means you can use them for any purpose. You’ll also be finding a stylish use for all those old t-shirts that you love, but never have an excuse to wear. Use your pencil to trace the line of the dinner plate on the shirt and then cut along this line. Sew the hemline closed with your sewing machine, and to make sure the new seam is extra strong, double back over it.
They also make absolutely fabulous maternity shirts (before you ask, I’m not pregnant).
This means you are going to need the side seam of your shirt to be twice as long as your elastic piece. I originally (as you’ll see in the pictures) thought it would be easier to sew up the shirt to the point right before I hem it and then hem after sewed the ruching. The elastic is going to be sewn directly onto the seam allowance so the stitches will not be visible from the right side.
Sew just on the seam allowance the same way as the elastic so you can’t see any stitches on the right side. I’m kind of weird about textures sometimes, so you may end up liking the regular elastic better. The elastic thread in the bobbin keeps the seam from popping as long as the tension isn’t too tight.

You can practice on a scrap of the fabric you want to use by measuring it before and after sewing it and then calculating how much it gathers. I was on Google trying to see if anyone had another way to ruche besides the elastic piece stitched on. It would make a great background image for a web page or blog, desktop wallpaper or texture for Photoshop.
Imagine being able to save enough money to settle a nasty overdue account, or simply just having that little bit extra come month end? This pattern adds depth to the bag without narrowing the base like the typical boxed corners method does.
The elasticised waistband with a flat front makes this pattern both comfy to wear and easy for kiddos to dress themselves – an easy way to let them gain independence. Like I said before, elastic is forgiving so you don’t have to be incredibly accurate here.
Don’t go all the way side to side because the elastic will become skinnier when you stretch it out. I also have sensory things – I hate even feeling a tag in between my shoulder blades!
Just kind of draw a nice long, smooth curve and make sure it meets the bottom hem at about a 90 degree angle. I put on some cute heels, found a cute sweater to throw over the shirt to complete the outfit, and talked my neighbor into taking pictures of me.
I practice on scraps of the fabric I’m using first so I can make any adjustments before I start on my project. I liked the amount of ruching this gave me, but if you would like it to be more gathered, just sew a second line down the seam allowance right next to the first one.
Apparently this can be different for each machine so play around with it a bit and write it down somewhere so you remember what to do next time.
I even moved us over to our other neighbor’s yard because they still have pretty landscaping in this blah winter. I thought, well, back to the drawing board Steph, maybe going back to the fabric store and yet again staring down their notions will somehow illicit a response in my tired brain. I wish I knew back then that creating a ruched top was so easy, I would have saved boatloads of money! What you don’t see in this pic is that a metric ton of snow has just melted into the ground and a huge storm was blowing in.
At least if my neighbor’s had had an issue with me using their yard as a backdrop, I could have told them I was aerating their yard for them. I have only used that technique to create comfy extra stretchy waistbands for skirts before.
Anyway, I wanted to thank you for taking the time to share this with the Internet world and more specifically with myself, and I also wanted to let you know that A) I will be reading your blog more and B) I love your Superman pose.
