Thata€™s why, despite vastly superior products with a conventional trunk, the aging SRX crossover was the branda€™s best-selling model last year, pushing over 100,000 units. Cadillac has evolved its crossover game, replacing the SRX with the more stylish and modern XT5. American luxury SUV buyers seem primed for a shiny new Cadillac crossover, and the newly-named XT5 is here to scoop them up, but as I learned throughout a week with Caddya€™s new contender, it may be more evolution than revolution. When it premiered at the Los Angeles Auto Show last fall, Cadillaca€™s latest crossover was a bit of a polarizing design. I like the character line running from below the door mirror to the top of the tail lamps, and the headlights are gorgeous when viewed up close, and cut a distinct profile at night. Front seat comfort is adequate, with the seat bottoms providing tons of cushion and support, but the back and headrest can be board-stiff during extended drives.
Heated and ventilated seats are a must-have, and the automatic climate control is excellent at keeping the cabin at exactly the temperature you set it at, without having to blast icy cold air directly at your face for 30 second intervals.
In the back, legroom and headroom are improved dramatically from the SRX thanks to the ability to recline and slide the rear seats.
Taking a page out of BMW's playbook, the XT5's gear shifter is somewhat counterintuitive and doesn't always slip into the desired gear. Thankfully, the CT6 and XT5 have done away with the massive slab of piano black and chrome that acted as the center stack for recent Cadillacs, but some capacitive touch buttons remain, and theya€™re still not ideal. A major highlight of the XT5a€™s controls, however, is the steering wheel, which features clean and easy plastic buttons that control volume, phone, cruise control, driving assists, and more in a logical format. Behind the rear seats, the XT5 has just 30 cubic feet of cargo space, but on the plus side, it features a handy storage management bar to keep items from sliding around.
The 2017 XT5 manages 30 cubic feet of cargo space, which is only an improvement of 0.2 cubic feet over the outgoing SRX and middle-of-the-road among competitors. Fold the rear seats a€“ which, blissfully, lay completely flat a€“ and total cargo space expands to 63 cubic feet.
The cabin is also lined with handy storage cubbies, including a large one under the center console thata€™s suitable for an average-sized handbag. Along with the much-improved CUE operating system, the XT5 contains GM's renowned 4G LTE in-car Wi-Fi. In terms of standard and optional technology, Cadillac is pushing the envelope with the XT5, but whata€™s less impressive is how it all works a€“ or rather, often fails to work a€“ together.
Over the course of one (admittedly very hot) week with the XT5, the CUE infotainment system malfunctioned regularly, booting up and shutting down every minute or two until it would cease to function altogether, even after turning the car off and back on again.
When it was working, though, the CUE system is much improved over the outgoing version, with the main highlight being the 4G LTE in-car Wi-Fi that GM has become famous for. The XT5 also offers navigation with traffic assist and satellite radio, not to mention Apple CarPlay and Android Auto if you dona€™t feel like using the manufacturera€™s system.

While the XT5 is not yet rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it does offer an impressive suite of active safety features on the upper trim levels.
My XT5 Premium Luxury was equipped with a rear-vision camera, blind spot alert, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator and front automatic braking at low speeds. With a reworked 3.6-liter V6 engine, the XT5 makes a solid 310 horsepower, but only 271 pound-feet of torque. The XT5 utilizes a re-vamped version of Cadillaca€™s stalwart 3.6-liter V6, eschewing turbocharged four cylinder engines in favor of a more old-school approach. The XT5 rides on an all-new platform that is front-wheel-drive biased, though all-wheel-drive is available on the Luxury trim and above.
Another drawback of forgoing a turbocharger is fuel economy, though Cadillac is able to salvage some back with the addition of an 8-speed automatic transmission and cylinder deactivation on the highway that lets the XT5 run as a four cylinder. Riding high on 20-inch wheels, the XT5 handles potholes and rough roads with remarkable ease. One major highlight of the XT5 is just how comfortable it is to drive, despite riding on large 20-inch wheels. Handling, on the other hand, isna€™t nearly as dynamic as the CTS or CT6, but thata€™s not necessarily a bad thing. Though clearly a descendant of the SRX, the XT5 has several unique styling cues, including a character line running from below the door mirror to the top of the tail lamps. Overall, Cadillac has managed to create a crossover that will sweep buyers of the old SRX off their feet, but as far as stealing sales from the Germans, the XT5 has a long way to go.
The XT5 is a solid SUV and a smart buy, but evolution is not quite enough when a revolution was desperately needed. The Cadillac XT5 is a smart and safe pick, especially for buyers who don't prioritize sporty performance in their sport utility vehicles.

The grille is a big improvement as well, giving width to a vehicle that is much taller than youa€™d think, and the new, wreathless Cadillac logo is one of the best iterations in the branda€™s history, in my opinion.
Cadillac has managed to craft one of the best-looking cabins in the industry, with just the right amount of old-school cool (glossy wood trim) and new-age class (mirror-like screens and buttons) to appeal to almost everyone. I wish Cadillac had applied the same amount of cushioning to both parts of the seat, but ita€™s certainly not uncomfortable.
The climate controls are separated from the rest and usable with easy toggle switches and flush black buttons, but the volume control remains an infuriating slider that could have been better solved with just a few knobs. Reverse is achieved by pushing it forward and to the left while holding a button, and sometimes doesna€™t slip into gear if you move too quickly. If Cadillaca€™s designers had applied the same level of practicality to the rest of the interior, it would be among the best.
Fortunately, the rear cargo compartment is easily accessible, and can be had with the same foot-waving technology to open the tailgate that Ford pioneered a few years ago. If you need more than that on a regular basis, perhaps you should be looking at vans, not crossovers.

It works quickly and flawlessly, and can link to more devices than there are seats in the car. Thata€™s a whole lot of safety tech for a mid-tier luxury crossover a€“ one that may prove to win over luxury-conscious buyers. In normal a€?Toura€? mode, the XT5 operates in mostly front-wheel-drive, applying power to the rear wheels if slippage occurs, and as a result, I found that torque steer was prominent when stomping on the throttle and turning immediately. Potholes and road blemishes are no problem for this new chassis, and the XT5 eats up highway miles with ease as a result.
It seems that with the XT5, Cadillac is content to leave the sports SUV stigma to the Germans, and has focused instead on a smooth steering rack. Ita€™s an excellent implementation of some of the best parts of a€?new Cadillaca€? into an appealing crossover, but in terms of style, driving dynamics, and outright luxury, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz still have a leg up, and Lexus buyers will seemingly never give up that legendary reliability, even if Cadillac is offering a better SUV. This initiative is based on the reality that "One Can Make a Difference." That means you and me! Cadillac claims that everything that looks cut-and-sewn is, in fact, cut-and-sewn, and therea€™s more leather in here than you might expect from an American car. Thankfully, the seats are adjustable in myriad ways, and the high driving position offers excellent visibility and gives you that priceless feel of control while driving. Just be careful when you exit the XT5 from the rear doors: there are sharp creases on the edges that will do a number on surrounding vehicles if swung open carelessly. Therea€™s also an optional storage management system that works as a sort of fence, and can be moved in various directions to keep your things from sliding all over the rear. If you wish to have the added security of AWD in case of inclement weather, switch to all-wheel-drive mode to activate the system. During my 70-mile test loop of various road types, I managed 20.8 mpg overall, so it seems those estimates are accurate. The cabin is also plenty quiet, which is relaxing for those times that you want to turn off the radio and drive in silence. Ita€™s not the most nimble crossover, but the steering is nicely weighted, and easy to turn with just one hand, if you want (though we recommend you keep your hands at 9 and 3 at all times).
With tones of honey and orange it has a distinctively smooth character and is an excellent introduction to the famous House of Hennessy. Ita€™s truly worthy of a luxury denotation, and has a leg up on interiors from the Japanese and American brands. That figure isna€™t stellar for a midsize luxury crossover, but with gas staying cheap a€“ for the moment, at least a€“ many buyers wona€™t mind.
