April 1, 2012 by Paul Cunningham 40 Comments Message tracking is a Exchange Server 2010 feature that records log files of email traffic as messages travel between mailboxes and servers within the organization. Message tracking is a feature of Hub Transport, Edge Transport, and Mailbox servers as these are the Exchange 2010 server roles that are involved in transmitting email messages around the network.
If you find any servers with message tracking logs disabled you can enable it with Set-TransportServer or Set-MailboxServer.
Max Directory Size – this is an additional setting for limiting the total size of message tracking logs on your server. Log Path – the default is the same drive as the Exchange 2010 install directory, but you can move this to any path you wish. The web interface for message tracking is part of the Exchange Control Panel and provides very basic search functionality to search for messages either sent by or received by a mailbox, based on the sender, recipients, and subject line. One of the advantages of this web interface is that it is available for regular users to perform delivery report searches for their own emails, or delegate the task to power users or auditors, without needing to install the Exchange 2010 management tools on their workstation. Message tracking log searches can also be performed in the Tracking Log Explorer, a GUI search tool that is part of the Exchange Management Console. The message Tracking Log Explorer provides a fairly user-friendly interface for administrators to perform searches, but has a few limitations as well. So while the Tracking Log Explorer is decent tool for single server environments, in any larger environment you will find PowerShell a much better way to perform message tracking log searches. The Exchange Management Shell includes the Get-MessageTrackingLog cmdlet that can be used for message tracking log searches. Using PowerShell to search message tracking logs is a big topic so I’ve written a separate article about it including many sample queries that you can build off to suit your own situations. Message tracking is a feature of Exchange Server 2010 that is enabled by default, and can be configured in many ways to suit your environment. Tutorials Exchange 2010, Message TrackingAbout Paul CunninghamPaul is a Microsoft MVP for Office Servers and Services, specializing in Exchange Server and Office 365, and is the publisher of Exchange Server Pro. Use Powershell to run the searches and you can search multiple servers with a single command. And at the bottom of that articles links to many more articles with other examples of search criteria. I can successfully get the logs locally from the edge transports, I just cannot retrieve them remotely. Message tracking logs include the message ID, so you could just count the unique message IDs.
I am trying to track an email from a mailbox in our single server environment, Exchange 2010, and the email was never received, but emails are being received from other domains to this same recipient. As an administrator you can login to the Exchange Control Panel and run delivery reports for other users. The third option is the best one in my opinion, and well worth learning as it is one the most powerful and effective email delivery troubleshooting techniques an Exchange admin can have. I have a big problem with users doing delivery report in owa and the same if I do it out of the EMC as Exchange Admin.
But Message-Tracking works fine in powershell as explained in this article and it works also if instead of Message Tracking in the web-gui I choose the traditional Message-Tracking-Log-Explorer. The answer is, message tracking by default can be performed by members of the Organization Management, Recipient Management, and Records Management role groups. Records Management gives them access to some other things that may not be acceptable for some orgs though, so in those cases a custom role group that just permits Message Tracking can be created.
Paul, Jeff, I never got an answer regarding my normal users not being able to show their own message-delivery-reports in OWA.
You could try doing tracking log searches in PowerShell instead to see if it’s just an ECP bug I suppose. For message tracking you need to be a member of Recipient Management, Records Management, or Organization Management. Paul, is there a way to check for messages incoming from just a specific receive connector? I have exchange server platform and i have 4 Databases but i have problem with 1 Data base that the logs was increase rappildy per second. On servers that will host the Hub Transport or Mailbox server role, install the Microsoft Filter Pack. The receive connector is set at the Server Configuration level, I will modify the default receive connector and enable protocol logging for the inevitable debugging that will follow when troubleshooting mail flow issues.
Move the Offline Address Book to the new Exchange 2007 mailbox server using the wizard in the Exchange Management Console to perform this procedure. At this point it is useful to create a mailbox on the Exchange 2010 server so that you can test mail flow into and from the organization. Microsoft has increased the maximum database size limit from 200GB in Exchange 2007 to 2TB in Exchange 2010. However, if you have the Standard Edition of Exchange, you will only be able to mount five databases. Another strategy to use to take advantage of DAG is to create databases based on which users require high availability.
One tip I have for you is to avoid immediately trying to mount the database after creating it.

The first step is to assign a computer certificate issued by the internal PKI to the UM Service using the built-in Certificate Wizard. If you were performing a full upgrade of UM (using the TechNet terminology from the URL above) then you would simply modify the UM server and add it to the existing dial plan. Moving back to our co-existence reality, the next thing to do is to change the Startup mode to TLS. At this point you need to create additional dial plans and UM hunt groups with new pilot numbers.
You can also add a phone number to use for Outlook Voice Access (Just enter a subscriber access number). Then, on the OCS side, you need to modify the Front End Properties and add the Exchange 2010 Server to the Host Authorization tab. You need to create a location profile that matches the Exchange 2010 dialplan exactly in FQDN format and then associate an AutoAttendant. Then, after mailboxes are migrated to Exchange 2010, you will have to disable UM, and then enable them for UM again so that they can be connected to the new Exchange 2010 dial plan (performs a PIN reset). If you were trying to delete a mailbox database in Exchange 2010, you have to clear all move requests first. Microsoft recommends that you back up the source mailbox server before you try to move any mailboxes.
If the user has Outlook open during the move, that is fine, but they’ll get prompted to restart Outlook when the move completes. After all mailboxes have been moved from 2007 to 2010, you can dismount and remove the databases from the Exchange 2007 mailbox server. During old days with Windows Server 2003, troubleshooting with Windows Cluster more are with the command line and script of cluster.exe. Exchange Online is one of several cloud services offered by Microsoft Office 365 for enterprises. Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) is a feature that's found in most legacy voice mail systems. With Exchange 2010, a feature called Voicemail Preview allows workers to receive text-transcriptions of their voicemail messages, saving the time it takes to listen to messages. Microsoft published more details about its Exchange 2013 preview beta, which was released last week as a test preview.
Exchange 2007 introduced a voicemail feature, which meant voicemail messages could arrive in your Inbox.
Before we get to those, let's jump straight in with a look at the hurdles involved in deploying Exchange Server 2010 — not least of which is the fact that it's 64-bit only. This may be situations such as tracking the routing or delivery of a single email message, troubleshooting a server load issue, or analysing overall email traffic patterns. You can see the current status of message tracking on a server by opening the Properties of that server in the Exchange Management Console and looking at the Log Settings tab.
Those are multi-role servers, with both the Hub Transport and Mailbox server roles installed.
The default limit is 1Gb but in high volume environments you may find that this limit means logs are purged before they reach the full 30 day max age, because the max directory size overrides the max age setting. On some of our highest volume servers (eg messaging hub sites, and Edge Transport servers) this path has been changed to a non-OS drive with a lot more free disk space. This tool gives administrators some more control over the searches they perform such as searching for specific events (eg FAIL events), searching for a particular message ID, and controlling the date ranges for search results. Wildcard searches are not possible, nor are searches across multiple servers simultaneously. This is one of the most useful and powerful ways to search your tracking logs, but it may appear to be a steep learning curve for some administrators. It is useful for troubleshooting and reporting tasks, and Exchange 2010 comes with several tools to make tracking log searches possible. I’m trying to get the status if the message was delivered successfully or not of course from our end. I guess it has to do with permissions, as I can do it if I log in with an Exchange-Org-Admin Account. Here’s an example for send connectors, but it should be simple enough to adjust to your receive connector scenario too.
This is the last post in a series focusing on the transition to Exchange 2010 from Exchange 2007. I will also increase the default message size to a more realistic size, ex: 40mb (this is fine for smaller organizations). We can do this because we have a hosted spam filter and our firewall restricts access to just that service’s IP address range. This helps eliminate problems that happen when outside spam filters perform reverse lookups against your IP and MX Record (or even SenderID).
Examine the message headers from your free web-based email service so that you can validate the proper masquerading of the outbound IP address.
This change decouples databases from servers to enable automatic failover via the new Database Availability Group (DAG) feature (a topic for a future blog series) and therefore this requires that Databases be created at the Organizational level.

It is still recommended to separate databases into manageable buckets so that database restores can fit within your SLA, but if databases are replicated in a DAG group, then you may be able to avoid backups altogether and with BIG database sizes! See this blog article that describes moving the ‘arbitration mailboxes’ out of the default database so that it can be deleted.
For example, if a very large organization did not want to pay for the bandwidth required to replicate thousands of users, but only wanted the executives to have their mailboxes replicated, you could create an ‘Executive’ mailbox store, and then selectively add this database to a DAG store and only replicate it and not the other mailbox databases.
It seems that Exchange is not really ready for it, you need to give it a minute and then manually mount it otherwise you will get an error message. Mailbox moves in Exchange 2010 can now be performed online with zero impact to the user, and can therefore be performed during business hours.
Additionally, perform a full online Exchange backup of the destination server after the mailbox moves are complete. If you have public folders, you will need to either replicate those or remove them before you can uninstall Exchange.
In a future series of posts, I will cover backing up Exchange 2010, and monitoring Exchange with System Center Operations Manager 2010. In order to post comments, please make sure JavaScript and Cookies are enabled, and reload the page. We haven’t seen the upper bounds One of the other areas that has changed with Exchange 2010 Unified messaging is around Caller ID Resolution. Voice Mail Preview is a cool new Exchange 2010 feature that attempts to take some of the mystery out of voicemail. The Exchange 2013 preview contains several management improvements for IT pros compared with the Exchange 2010 product. Neither the service provider nor the domain owner maintain any relationship with the advertisers. In those cases you can use either Get-TransportServer or Get-MailboxServer to query the same setting (it is one setting that can be queried with two cmdlets, not two separate settings). I find sometimes by the time an issue is reported or found that 30 days is not quite enough to be able to search back in time.
And although reports files are automatically saved by the tool, they can only be exported in XML format which is not as user-friendly as CSV would be.
It describes message tracking, gives examples, and links to other articles with more detailed examples as well. Otherwise, allowing anonymous access on a server that is directly connected to the internet is not advisable. Since we already had an Exchange 2007 UM in our environment, we had to decide between a full upgrade or a partial upgrade.
If you have any distribution lists that were hardcoded with an Exchange 2007 server as the Expansion server, you’ll need to resolve that as well.
For example, it is interesting to note that if you have servers in a DAG group, Microsoft suggests that it may not be necessary to backup those servers any more, but instead turn on circular logging and let the DAG group provide the backup capability. In case of trademark issues please contact the domain owner directly (contact information can be found in whois).
However this is entirely up to you, and if your logs are being backed up you can always consider restoring older logs from backup if required. Consider your server’s disk capacity as well as the impact that more log files has on the amount of time some tracking log searches will take. I login with the mailbox user credentials that is having the email issue, but get a “Sorry!
And since we had already decided to have co-existence of the two systems for a period of time where mailboxes will reside in both the 2007 and 2010 environments, then full upgrade of UM is eliminated from being an option (but it is the preferred between the two for simplicity reasons). Lastly, if you have any legacy routing group connectors from a previous migration from Exchange 2003, you’ll need to remove the routing group connector before you can uninstall Exchange 2007. This is useless except to tell me if our users received the mail, not whether it was ever relayed or whether we received ndr’s from their servers or not. On the Move Offline Address Book page, click Browse to select the server to which you want to move the OAB generation process, and then click OK. For a full treatment of these two upgrade scenarios, I highly advise you to become intimately familiar with this TechNet article.
Click Advanced and then check the box next to Include inheritable permissions from this objects parents.
I’ve searched a while for answers to this, but have seen a lot of unrelated material. In the Result pane, click the Offline Address Book tab, and then select the OAB for which you want to move generation to a new server. If you do not have sufficient free space on your transaction log drive for transaction log file generation, you could temporarily turn on circular logging.
If you have turned on circular logging during the mailbox move, make sure that you turn circular logging off when the mailbox move is completed.
On the Distribution tab, select the Enable Web-based distribution and the Enable public folder distribution check boxes and then click OK.
