Adobe Photoshop comes with a number of default shortcuts for different Tools, Menus or Filters with the obvious purpose of making your work process easier. In this quick Photoshop Tips article I will list the main available shortcuts for the Brush Tool.
Be a Cool Dude! With your donation you can help us maintain this website and keep producing free resources many months to come! Another Photoshop texture that is really used by digital artists is for sure the old paper texture. With Photoshop CS5 coming out soon (most likely in April 2010), I created a list of the top 10 most requested features that I believe would make Photoshop a more powerful and time saving tool. With more and more digital artists downloading and collecting brushes, why is it such a pain to find that brush you downloaded recently?
Link Type Layers to Type Styles so you can edit them in one place and update all associated layers.
Workaround:You can right click on a text layer, choose Select Similar Layers and it will select all the text layers in your document. At Adobe Max 2009, one of the Fireworks engineers tried to show this off, however, it didn’t work that well. Workaround:Well the obvious answer is you could save more often, however, there are multiple software vendors that have the ability to Auto Save and they even have version control. Have a default keyboard shortcut that you can rotate the brush in 1% increments left and right. Let’s face it the gradient tool and the editor is not very intuitive and is lacking features. Workaround:Use Illustrator to create you gradients and import them into your Photoshop document.
If you have used Adobe Camera Raw 4.1+ or Lightroom, you will have seen the Clarity slider. One thing I kinda thought would be nice, is a folders option in the font preview to sort & label your fonts in separate folders.
Thats great man, and the text one is really annoying too Hopefully this post comes to adobes hears and they can start improving some of this stuff.
Another thing was just thinking of as it would be great right now for what I’m wanting to do. I think the Step Back (better than Undo) command reverting to the previos layer is the most annoying aspect of Photoshop without question! For the text styles, you don’t just need the text styles to be editable, but all styles. I think some of the things (type styles, gradients, stroke outlines) lacking functionality you want might have to do with PS being raster whereas AI is pure vector. The Healing Brush Tool is the same as the Spot Healing Brush Tool with the difference that it requires you to set a sample point so that Photoshop will base its healing algorithm on the area of the picture set as the sample point. The Patch Tool is a different beast from the first two and it’s very useful for seamless blending of skin or other uniform surfaces. Finally, the Red Eye Tool requires you to select an iris with a red eye problem and it attempts to remove the redness in the pupil. Set it to minimum and you will have some nice blurry strokes that blend well with the background. In the brush option panel (usually you can find the option panel in the upper area, just below the menu bar) you can also change the blending mode of the brush.
The round brush tool is not the only tool available: Photoshop offers you a wide range of different shaped brush for your needs. The Clone Stamp Tool is probably my favorite tool and surely the one I have most fun with (and Filter > Liquify too). Personally I find it a very powerful tool but my workflow is based on adjustment layers and nondestructive editing so I don’t find the need for the History Brush Tool. The Art History Brush Tool is a strange tool that allows you to paint from previous states of the images but in crazy, dynamically changing shapes.
The Background Eraser Tool is like the Color Replacement Tool , but instead of replacing the color you erase it. The Magic Eraser Tool looks and acts a lot like the Magic Wand Tool but instead of selecting pixels it deletes them. Drag a selection with the Marquee tool, but before releasing the mouse button, press and hold the Spacebar to relocate the selection. Rather than typing in an exact figure, simply nudge the numeric value up and down sequentially with the cursor keys. Windows users can simply toggle using the cursor keys, Mac users however can use the Shift key along with the plus and minus keys while the direct selection tool is active.
With the Brush tool selected, press the [ and ] keys to increase or decrease the brush size. Head into the Brush setting, under Brush Tip Shape adjust the circular icon to rotate the angle of the brush. Go to File > Scripts > Load files into stack to open up a bunch of images and automatically place them onto individual layers.
Click and drag a guide from the document rulers, or go to View > New Guide to drop a guide at a specific placement.

Click the small options arrow in the corner of the Layers Palette, then change the Layers Panel Options to alter the thumbnail size.
Access All Areas members gain instant access to 100s of premium design resources & source files.
Also a very cool guide tip – press alt while dragging a guide to switch between horizontal and vertical. Double click the zoom icon for quick 100% zoom is cool, also try to double click the hand icon for quick fit-screen. Shift+everything to make it ten times larger (for example – move an item one pixel with the arrows, move it ten pixels with shift, but also, click on any numeric text field to use the arrows for slow-change the value, shift+arrow will quick change it buy a value of ten). To move keyboard shortcuts from Mac to PC or the other way around it almost always works to just swap Ctrl and Cmd. To zoom the image at its original size, rather than double clicking the magnifier, you can press CTRL+0 (or command + 0 on a Mac I guess?).
Nice set of tips, I’ve been trying to find a way of enlarging the font previews for ages, but now I know. The most used is the brush size shortcut, but it is useful to know other shortcuts like the brush opacity shortcut or the brush hardness shortcut And if you don't find one on the list you can create it. I have listed each of the requested features that I hope to be included in the next version.
I wish we could be able to view the whole preview of the brush, that would save us countless hours! I would love to have the brush author be able to add tags or keywords to the brushes, which would allow you to easily search through your whole brush collection to find that perfect brush for your design. It has a great wealth of features that will hopefully be integrated into Photoshop someday. If you need to change anything, say the color and the size, you should be able to open up a styles area, make some changes and all of your layers that have the type style would also be changed to that style.
Imagine that you could open up your History Panel and delete a section of 20 history states without changing any of your latest history states.
Wouldnt it also be great, if you could click on a color and view colors that go with the color right in the swatches panel? You have probably seen tweets lately that go something like this, “Photoshop just crashed!
Say your working on layer #1, and you go to layer #2, create something and then you undo what you just created. But say you have a grunge brush selected and you want to rotate it, you have to open the brushes panel and change the angle, then brush, and then go back into your brushes panel and repeat. You could also mess with the curves and try to get it perfect, however, adding in the Clarity Adjustments would make our lives a lot easier! Check out the Adobe Feature Requests forum and post some of these features or even features you wish to see in future versions of Photoshop.
I always find myself selecting the text, then clicking on the fonts in the options toolbar and finally pressing the down arrow a million times until I find the right one.
I am only an occational user of the software so maybe I haven’t noticed yet, but holy crap.
I didnt even know i wanted some of those things but now i WISH they were already part of the package.
Also, the code for Illustrator (like ALL adobe programs) is so bloated and buggy I doubt they would play nice trying to integrate the two together anyways. In this tutorial we will take a look at the rest of the Photoshop Toolbar and get familiar with the various tools the program has to offer. I simply clicked the marked spots with the Spot Healing Brush Tool and Photoshop created some good skin based on the clicked spot and the surrounding area. To put it more simply: you will heal all your next spots based on the area you Alt-clicked on.
There is a subtle but noticeable difference but that’s what you will probably want when doing portrait retouching with Photoshop.
Although there are more advanced ways to do that (with Curves or Channels) this tool does a pretty good job. Combined with the layer’s blending mode this option offers you some wildly creative options.
You don’t have a hardness option (in fact you do have a hardness slider but dragging it doesn’t change a thing) but you have almost all of the features of the Brush Tool.
It has a bunch of settings in the Options panel and it offers some interesting results but to be honest I almost never use it.
Again, I don’t use this tool at all but if you’re into traditional painting and you want some digital tools to play with I recommend Corel’s Painter which is built solely for this purpose. It has a lot of uses and if you’re doing photo manipulations then this a tool to be on good terms with. It was a very popular tool back in the day when the nondestructive editing capabilities of Photoshop were scarce. It’s tips like these that make the most common of tasks quicker and easier than ever to help speed up your Photoshop workflow. Change the Font Preview Size option to Extra Large to display legible preview on the font drop down menu. Using this command while another tool is selected will change the blending mode option for that specific tool.
Hover over the edges of the screen to bring back palettes, which will then disappear again when the mouse is moved away.

Another one I discovered this week is: holding down SHIFT+[ ] with the brush tool selected changed the hardness of the brush too!
In some cases, I have even included workarounds; like utilizing 3rd party software or taking some extra steps to get to the desired outcome. I just lost two hours of work!” Everyone has had this problem at one time or another. Another way is you could use Illustrator to create a square stroke around your object or text and import it as a smart object. You could also get a Wacom Intuos4 tablet with an Art pen that will allow 360 degrees of barrel rotation.
Illustrator CS4 just got a new interactive Gradient tool that makes creating gradients and working with them so much easier. I really wish Adobe would purchase the rights to your program and integrate into a future release of Photoshop.
I couldnt agree more that features that were added to improve illustrator should have been automatically added to photoshop, i never understood that either.
I guess I have just become so accustomed to using the Step Backward keyboard shortcut as my undo.
John Nack did mention that he is looking for feedback on integrating better vector tools into Photoshop.
One example is when the global masthead changes on one comp we have to open up all the PSDs and make that change.
On the other hand, let us say that you used the Spot Healing Brush Tool like crazy some parts look fake and don’t fit with the rest of the face. The round brush tool is the one selected by default when you first open Photoshop so you probably have played with it a little.
There are better, more accurate ways to replace some colors with other colors (at least for me) so I won’t go into detail about how to use it. Let’s say that you heavily modified a photo but you still want some of the original look in certain areas.
You don’t like the way your new painted layer looks, you select the Eraser Tool and send pixels into oblivion.
There are much better selection tools and techniques (like Channels and Color Range) that I do not use this tool very often. Currently, you only have the option to revert back to a history state and lose all of your latest changes. Yes, we all know that you should be saving your work, but when your really into a design, that is really the last thing on your mind. Add the Illustrator Gradient Tool with the current Gradient Adjustment Layers and bingo…I would be happy!
It’s not the most advanced technique for making clean skin but it is a basic and very fast tool.
Clicking the left bracket key decreases the size of the brush while the right bracket key increases the size. Create a new layer, draw something with a black brush then choose Edit > Define Brush Preset. Choose Window > Brush to open the brush panel and enjoy the multitude of settings for your newly created brush. Alternatively, if you’re smart you could use a layer mask and nondestructively remove the undesired pixels. Select the troublesome area with the patch tool and drag and drop the selection a couple times in the surrounding good portions of the skin. We can add texture over our brush, make it rotate randomly, make it scatter, add another brush on top of it and many other things. Open Window > History and click on one of the little squares next to the name of the desired state.
Maybe you noticed that I generously used the term nondestructive but I do this for good reason. This will create skin in the selected area based on the area from which we drag the selection.
In the image below notice that I clicked on the little box next to the most upper state of the image – the original.
When working on a document in Photoshop it’s very important to be able to go back and redo or modify some of your old actions. The whole process is easier done than said so it’s best that you try it and see for yourself. Now if I create a new layer and paint with the history Brush Tool I can restore certain areas of my picture to their original state.
This offers you the power to infinitely tinker with settings and adjustments without losing any permanent data. That is why I recommend staying away from the Eraser Tool as much as possible and go for layer masks instead.
It is very useful for creating new content based on an existing one and removing skin imperfections or undesired objects.
