To Remove a shortcut from within Quick Launch, you can right click on the shortcut from either taskbar or hidden folder location above and click on Delete. B) Right click or press and hold on the dotted separator line just to the left of Quick Launch, then uncheck the Show Text and Show Title by clicking on them. NOTE: If you had previously moved the taskbar to the left or right side of the screen, then you would be moving Quick Launch to the top of the taskbar instead.
B) Left click and hold on the dotted separator line (ex: for pinned apps) on the far left side of the taskbar, then drag the pointer to the right of the dotted separator line for Quick Launch. C) Drag the dotted separator line (ex: for pinned apps) now on the right side back to the left until you get to the edge of Quick Launch without condensing Quick Launch, then release.
There's really not a way to do this by a simple registry setting that I know of since you are basically just adding the Quick Launch folder to the taskbar as a toolbar. However, if you like, you could use the tutorial below to be able to easily backup and restore all toolbars and pinned programs on the taskbar to make restoring them easy. As a workaround, create a New Folder where you like, copy the shortcuts from the Quick Launch folder (see note box at top of tutorial) into the new folder, then do the tutorial again using the New Folder's path instead at step 3. That is one of my favourites - I don't have any use for it myself, but plenty of people will -at least someone at MS has had a good idea. It's a good thing indeed, since the old appearance tab with the classic themes (that covered for this up to Win7) is gone, something with the same functionality had to be added somewhere in the UI. I remember back in XP where you could also choose a smaller size (of 75% and even lower 50%) but that would probably mess the looks and was excluded from the options. In that case, you could change the DPI to say 125% to increase the size of everything a bit more to see if that may work for you. In this tutorial there is already an option explained how to modify some font sizes, but ALL of them just like in Win7 are found in the registry.
But you require a Win7 install or VM from where you can get the exact settings you need, or by modifying the needed entries in the Win8 registry. If those items work(ed) in one of your Windows 7 installs, go and export those settings from the Win7 registry and apply it to 8. How to Access ?Advanced Appearance Settings? A) Under the Compatibilty tab, check the Run this program in compatibility mode for box and select Windows Vista. Some patches that remove the watermark have been known to break the compatibility mode and the only way you will fix it will be if you can uninstall the patch or do a system restore, one patch in particular that I used was a pluspatch from Orbit30 that caused that issue although I think he has since fixed that problem and there are some other ones that have also worked with no side effects. Apparently if you turn on and use the compatibility mode prior to removing the watermark, it continues to work fine. Both systems are using the same watermark-removal script with the same OS and MSN build, the only thing that differs is the order in which things were done. Pardon the necrobump, but since I started using Win7 as my OS with the RC's release, I've noticed the messenger annoyance myself. I just don't think this is a solution, though; it's merely a dirty hack to prevent Messenger from even knowing it's running on Win7.
Microsoft does know about it since they designed Windows Live Messenger to run that way on purpose to take advantage of the new taskbar in Windows 7.
Just because everyone has gotten accustomed to throwing everything in the system tray doesn't mean that MS messed up on how they're developing their programs. If you introduce both a system tray and a task bar item for the same item, you're introducing clutter.
If you use Live all the time, having it on the taskbar shouldn't be a problem, and if you don't use it all the time, then you really shouldn't have it pinned anyway. You can install messenger and it will function properly with the tray icon and no taskbar issues by default. The latest version of messenger has the taskbar issue because of a change in the taskbar in 7 that vista did not have thus running the latest messenger in vista compatibility corrects it.
While you could add a folder or drive as a toolbar on the taskbar, it just is not the same as directly pinning the folder or drive to the taskbar like apps. This tutorial will show you how to Pin to taskbar folders and drives like apps for your account in Windows 10. Apps, folders, and drives you pin to your taskbar are stored and referenced in both locations below. While any pinned folders or drives you have will be separate icons on your taskbar, they will still have their taskbar thumbnail previews show on the pinned File Explorer icon when you open them.
You can use any icon that you would like to have displayed on the taskbar for this folder or drive though. This is basically the same as W7 and W8, but what is different is that in both of those, one could rearrange the order of the pinned files by dragging and dropping in the popup menu on the taskbar. The limit is based on your screen resolution for what will show in the jump list without having to scroll. Another alternative, is to add a new folder as toolbar on your taskbar, then add shortcuts of folders to the new folder to have them show in the toolbar's menu. Do step 6 or 7 below for how you would like to change the screen resolution of the selected display. At the top on the right side, select a display (ex: monitor) that you want to change the screen resolution of. On the right side under Resolution: (current resolution), move the slider left or right to select the screen resolution that you want for the selected display.
If you like, repeat steps 2 to 6 for any other display you wish to change the screen resolution of. This will include the text size and bold appearance settings for the title bars, menus, message boxes, palette titles, icons, and tooltips items. Under Change only the text size, select a item you want to change the text size and bold settings of. Repeat steps 2-3 for any other item you would like to change the text size and bold settings of.
I guess I am being stubborn at this point in that I want to change the font size of the window text.
So to make the task easier, you can boot into Windows 7 and customize the advanced appearance settings using Desktop Personalization window. My eyesight is corrected by glasses, but I see everything about 30% smaller than it is in real life (glasses prescription -9.5). Our forum is dedicated to helping you find support and solutions for any problems regarding your Windows 7 PC be it Dell, HP, Acer, Asus or a custom build. Closing WLM doesn't exit you out of WLM, but just minimizes WLM to the system tray and removes the taskbar icon.
For Windows Live Messenger to Use a Taskbar IconA) Under the Compatibilty tab, uncheck the Run this program in compatibility mode for box. It kinda defeats the purpose of the taskbar to have dormant programs cluttering it up (that's the tray's purpose!!), and I was looking for just this solution via Google. The new behavior looks more like a bug than a feature, and many users will see it as an annoyance.
I did the same thing once on a Mac a few years back and this experience on Windows takes the cake for being from Hell: lack of information on where application settings files and simple things (like the location of Outlook's contact info) made the task bar debacle seem like child's play. Nearly every quest resulted in misinformation from Microsoft (the options described just never seemed to be where they were supposed to be, or they didn't function) and sorting through countless forums. At higher resolutions, such as 1600 x 1200, more items will fit on the screen but they will appear smaller.
The resolution modes will vary with each computer based on the video card device, monitor size, and video & monitor drivers. If the screen looks distorted or fuzzy, then you may have an incorrect screen resolution size set for the monitor. They go in but are going into the quick view section of File Explorer instead of being directly visible (by right clicking on taskbar icon) like the other 12 are.
