The Big Country has received so much rain over the last few days that some areas are beginning to flood. The Red Cross emergency app sends location-based flood and flash flood watches and warning alerts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Kits should contain a first aid kit and a seven-day supply of essential medications, foods that don’t require cooking or refrigeration and manual can opener, bottled water, flashlights and a battery-powered radio with extra batteries, copies of important documents like your insurance policies, cell phone chargers, family and emergency contact information, maps of the area and other emergency items for the whole family. Keep children and pets out of the water, as they are curious and can be harmed by flowing or contaminated water. When you have confirmed your password, you will be able to log in through Facebook on both sites. Sign up to have exclusive KEAN A-List contests, events, coupons, presales, and much more delivered to you for FREE. Keeping in mind that more rain on the way, the American Red Cross has issued Flood Preparedness information to help keep your family safe.

The app also includes tips on how assemble an emergency kit for your family in the event of a power outage or evacuation, an “I’m Safe” button to let loved ones know you are okay, and a real-time map to help you find the location of Red Cross shelters should you need to leave your home.
If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankle, stop, turn around and go another way. A warning meansflooding is occurring or will occur soon. When a Flood is ImminentBe prepared! A food WARNING means flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon in your area. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. When a tsunami hits, don't stop to try to take any belongings with you, they'll hold you back and then run as fast as you can away from the ocean to higher ground.

Listen to area radio and television stations for possible flood warnings and reports of flooding in progress. Make sure you're always prepared for tsunamis if you live close by the ocean and especially if one has hit there before. As little as 6 inches (15 centimeters) of moving water can make you fall.If you have to walk in water, wherever possible, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.Do not drive into flooded areas. That can sometimes be in a building, but you do NOT want to trust a building that is likely to be swept away itself.
