Emergency Water storage is a topic that most survivalists are pretty familiar with; unfortunately few of them actually have a long-term water plan. Anyone who is prepping for a long-term survival situation needs to have a good emergency water storage solution. The storage containers that you choose to work with is really up to you, and will probably depend how much room you can dedicate to your water storage needs. One of the cheapest and easiest ways to start storing water is to wash and refill your old plastic water bottles when you’ve finished with them. 55 Gallon Water barrels are a pretty common option for survivalists, and they should be pretty easy to find at almost any outdoor sporting goods store.
The Water BOB – We came across the WaterBob a couple of years ago and thought it was a great emergency option for people who live in apartments. Knowing where to find water during an emergency – Make sure you check out our article on urban water sources. Storing water is great, but should the day come when you run through your supplies you’re going to need a way to find and filter water. You could use a Seychelle Water Bottle filter to filter a 100 gallons to 99.9999% for real safe water for your kids to drink. This may seem a bit off topic for this thread but I am wondering if there is a simple way to treat pee so that you could water your plants with it so you wouldn’t have to use your fresh water supply to keep your fresh vegies watered.
Remember, you don’t have to purify water that you will using to water plants, wash clothes or flush toilets. Any more opinions or comments about iodine are welcome but in a discussion about water purification I felt it was necessary to say. The problem with filling those big blue containers with water you intend to drink is you can’t see inside them. Plastic will leach more chemicals into water faster at higher temperatures if the plastic contains anything harmful.
In the event of an emergency, it is important to have planned ahead for food and drink storage. I see many polycarbonate water bottles being advertised as BPA free but I don’t see how this is actually technically possible as the primary building block used to make polycarbonate plastic is bisphenol A (BPA). So far the safest plastics for storing water seems to be #5 PP and Tritan copolyester which contains zero BPA.
I found a 5 gallon BPA Free Water Bottle from Enviro Products claiming to be the first ever BPA Free 5 gallon reusable bottle made from Tritan copolyester. Oak wine barrels are medium charred on the inside which is great for water as carbon and charcoal make great water filters. Once you have your amounts of water and what bottle to use sorted out next comes filling them up with water. Chlorinated water can destroy polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E in the body while generating toxins capable of free radical damage (oxidation). Chlorinated water contains chemical compounds called trihalomethanes which are carcinogens resulting from the combination of chlorine with compounds in water. Not only can stabilized oxygen be used for sanitizing water and preserving long term water storage but can be used medicinally as well.
I know this was a bit of a long article but hopefully this will give you some healthier ways to store water and be prepared. In developed countries, having clean water at your disposal at anytime is often just expected to always be available.
The easiest and probably the best way to store safe drinking water is to buy cases of bottled water from the store. If you choose to use tap water, it’s recommended to use food grade containers that are specifically designed to store water. If you don’t have much money and still want to store water, then your best option would be empty 2 liter soft drink bottles.
These barrels are usually blue, (this is done as a safety thing that lets you know water is stored inside) and are made with heavy duty food grade plastic materials. These tanks are popular in rural areas of the country that don’t have access to public water utilities, but can be used pretty much anywhere that rain water runoff can be collected. If you can afford to install a roof catchment system, this is an excellent option for long-term survival retreats, and it can go a long way to solving a lot of your water problems.
Your pool, if kept within the ranges suggested is normally cleaner and more pure than your tap water.
With perfect specific gravity, nothing will remain in the water; as water is the only compound with that specific gravity. I had to do a college research paper on preventing illness in 3rd world countries and the biggest preventable killer of children is diahrea (causing dehydration) associated with waterborne bacteria and viruses. Iodine is very helpful in situations where mass water storage is not really an option or your group is on the move and able to find new water sources.
Some ways of storing food and beverages, such as water, are relatively easy; others are more difficult. Getting a bottle meant for storing water that is BPA free is fairly easy to find these days now that the health risks of BPA have been receiving considerable attention world wide. The federal government does have health guidelines for others, but 49 of these contaminants have been found in one place or another at levels above those guidelines, polluting the tap water for 53.6 million Americans.
Quick water treatment solutions such as boiling or chlorinating water are only a short term solution and depending on the type of contamination may not even be useful. Your emergency water storage should be changed out every six months, so it’s a good idea to mark the containers with the date they were filled. The WaterBob holds up to 100 gallons of water, is made with heavy duty food grade plastic, and will keep your water fresh and clean during a disaster. There are a number of quality water filters on the market, but there are a couple that you might want to consider first. I discovered numerous ways that people were using with significant success to purify their water with almost no supplies. Commercially bottled has an expiration date too that is printed on each bottle and may last a little long then water you have stored at home. There are also a number of pools that are treated with salt which would be like drinking sea water. Remember, if it is warm, algea and every other bug grows in warm water, so chemical balance is critical. 50-60ml) lasted about 15 or so days for 8 people filling two 1000ml water bottles every couple of hours.

It’s quite important for every household to have clean drinking water stored in their house.
Half a gallon a day per person is the minimum requirement for drinking purposes, the water you get from food like fruits and vegetable notwithstanding.
If your water should be treated first before you can drink it, then treat it at the point of using it instead of before storage. When selecting areas to store your water, try to pick cool dark areas that do not receive direct sunlight. While these types of containers may be too big for some, they offer the added benefit of being able to catch rain water by hooking them up to your rooftop gutter systems.
Sorry, I strongly disagree with the statement that pool water has less chlorinating compounds than city tap water.
If you will be using house fixtures, like outdoor spigots, buy a hose rated for drinking water. Regardless of your water source, or how you may have stored it, the very last thing you need to do before raising that water bottle to your lips is to make sure you have just run that water through a water PURIFICATION unit, such as a Berky or a Kaytadyn. This is particularly important during emergencies, when your water lines have been cut and you can’t get water from your tap any longer because of natural disasters or imminent manmade threats (like riots and even war).
This solution should not only allow you to store large amounts of water, but is should also allow you to capture and filter water from multiple sources.
It’s always a good idea to know where you can obtain water during an emergency situation. While it will not remove chemicals, boiling water is probably the most effective way of killing viruses and pathogens.
I would just like to mention that often the supply of water entering the treatment facility is ten times worse than anything you will see in a swimming pool. There are various emergency situations and happenings around that could cause the water supply to be undrinkable, unavailable, or otherwise compromised. Five gallons of water can be disinfected by just one teaspoon of bleach, but not more than that or else you’ll be having problems aside from infection. We took water from almost any source we could find, including rivers, lakes, incredibly small streams and the like, with no filtration what so ever. So like others are saying, you might be safe to treat or at least filter the water before drinking. Long term water storage, meanwhile, involves getting the right storage units that will last a long time when it comes to storing your consumable, drinkable water for the long haul.
The water itself should be treated so that it doesn’t come with dangerous germs that will only spread the longer you store it. When it comes to food preparation, personal hygiene, and cleanup of eating utensils, you’ll also require half a gallon of water. Not only will this disinfect EVERYTHING, if you add 8 drops per gallon of water it will work exactly like the purification tablets and kill all the little nasties that make you sick. Most commercial water bottles can be reused at least one time; beyond that you may have to worry about leeching from the plastic. I advise against using ordinary milk jugs, as they don’t last as long as other bottles and are almost impossible to completely clean.
2 Liter bottles –  These bottles make great containers for storing water, and are easy to tuck away in small apartments where larger storage systems are not possible.
Berkey Water Filter – The Berkey Water Purification System is a popular filter in the survivalist community.
Good Quality Pots – Another thing you should consider is a good quality stainless steel pot for boiling water. A brita filter will work in a pinch to remove sediment and such however because it is not fine enough for bacteria or viruses it would be a good idea to also pick up a package of the water purification tablets for use after using the brita filter. I once read a comment that really made sense to me and that was to take a protractor and with a map of your area draw a 5 mile circle around your place, then map out each body of water where you can get water from, a lake, pond, golf course pond etc.
You can then use your empties to purify new sources of water in a similar fashion that is used in 3rd world countries. Those impurities and chemicals will way heavy on your kidneys for long term negative health effects. I washed these out with a bleach solution to get rid of the pickle remnants and want to use these for water and food storage containers. I just have a few comments; I would be careful in re-using containers such as 2 ltr soda bottle or water bottle. Buy 50 gallon water tanks from a specialized dealers, clean out the barrel with water and bleach. Most premium barrels used for wine or whiskey are hand made oak wine barrels carved from white oak without any wax, paint or glue on the inside and are sealed naturally by filling them with water which expands the wooden oak stalves sealing any leaks.
More than 240 million Americans use water from contaminated public water systems every day, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Chlorinated water destroys much of the intestinal flora, the friendly bacteria that help in the digestion of food and which protects the body from harmful pathogens. There are plenty of water stores that you can take your own bottles to be filled up on site. This entry was posted in Water Purification and Storage and tagged BPA Free, emergency preparedness, emergency preparedness supplies, lemon essential oil, stabilized oxygen, storing water, Tritan copolyester, water storage.
During natural disasters, these services can be disrupted or compromised, causing the water supply to become contaminated or undeliverable. Remember that stored drinking water has an expiration date and should be used and rotated regularly to make sure your supply is always fresh. Heck, it’s even good for those who just want to add a little bit of water to their supplies at the last minute. A pool is an open body of water and is no way a safe or clean as a closed water system in a community. When you buy bottled water it has an expiration date, NOT for the water but for the container. A separate location may provide more adequate food storage facilities than your current location.
It is obviously BPA free and impervious to oxygen and carbon dioxide but has a couple of distinct disadvantages in that the bottles are quite heavy and the glass could easily break if there was an emergency situation such as an earthquake, tornado or hurricane etc… and all your water supply could be gone instantly leaving you in a very serious situation of being without water.
Our water is collected and treated for us by treatment plants to remove contaminants such as heavy metals, bacteria and disease.
Another issue is that bottled water comes in thin clear plastic containers, which means they have to be protected from light for long term storage.

This little filter can handle over 13,000 gallons of water, and will filter all microorganisms larger than 0.2 microns. Considering the importance of safe drinking water and the relatively low cost to store it, having an emergency water storage supply is never a bad idea. The easiest of course was letting the water sit out in a clear plastic container in the sun. You can store them for 6 months or longer, although thanks to human consumption, it usually doesn’t last any longer than that (more like three weeks to a month). These bottles are designed to hold water, so they can be reliably used to start your stockpile. Jump on Google Earth and try to find any large bodies of water that are within walking, and then driving distance of your home. When you add to this the black side of the bottle helping to raise the temp of the water you get a nearly free process of water purification. Stockpiled dehydrated food and other preserved goods also require water in order to be eaten.
It’s been recycled on the Earth for billions of years, long before mankind came to be. If power outages were to occur, depending on your locality, your water flow might be affected or have trouble working properly since treatment plants for them also require electricity.
PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are also not recommended for water storage since the bottles themselves tend to degrade and contaminate it after a period of time. I live in the desert southwest and we don’t generally have basements here so our garage is the obvious place to store the water. Considering the importance of water, it always surprises that so many survival minded people don’t take the topic more seriously. Not drinking enough water can cause fatigue, it can also make you feel more hungry, which can lead to going through your food rations more quickly, it can trigger asthma attacks and many other ailments. According to Environmental Working Group, since 2004, testing by water utilities has found 315 pollutants in the tap water Americans drink, according to an Environmental Working Group (EWG) drinking water quality analysis of almost 20 million records obtained from state water officials. So now that you bottles are all filled up with clean purified water and ready to be stored you want to make sure your water stays clean, safe and fresh with no bacteria building up. The importance of proper water storage for emergencies can sometimes be the difference between life and death.
I’ve found that storing water in plastic 50 Gallon food grade drums works well as long as you invest in the proper type of drum wrench. Rinse and fill with water again and put a slight amount of chlorine bleach in the tank to keep the water sanitized over a long period of time.
With quality wooden barrels there are no worries about BPA, DEHA or other toxic chemicals leaching into the water and this is a great option for water storage.
To use these, after you have washed them out with soap and water, you must sanitize them with a solution of 1 quart water mixed with 1 teaspoon of non scented bleach.
Most tap water taken from major cities will hold in an air tight container nearly indefinitely due to the amounts of clorine and other chemicals they put into it. I would suggest storing water in a BPA free container and adding plain chlorine bleach (5 drops per gal. You can use some brand of chlorine bleach from the grocery store to do treat water, but not the type of chlorine used in swimming pools. This is more than enough reason to get proper water storage or storing water from your tap, but to improperly store them in drums could be hazardous to your health since stagnant water can serve as a breeding ground for insects and bacteria.
You should do commonsensical things like cleaning the container to keep mold and bacteria from spreading to your water supply.
You should use Plastics #1, #2, and #4 or polyethylene-based plastics in order to hold water because they’re believed to be some of the safest water containers in the world. There are a number of chemicals in pool water that I wouldn’t want to put into my body. Water also contains two molecules of hydrogen and one molecule of oxygen so it is a good source of additional oxygen to the body which helps with killing bacteria and viruses and helps keep the body clean and healthy.
Physicians for Social Responsibility reports that over 75,000 toxic synthetic and chemical compounds can be identified in this country’s water sources, though only a fraction of them are targeted for regulation. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that almost 1 million people in America fall ill annually from water contaminated with harmful microorganisms and about 900 die from drinking contaminated water. However, if you plan on using well water or any other type of non-treated water, it is recommended to add a couple of drops of non-scented bleach that contains 5.25 % sodium hypochlorite into your container right before sealing. I’ve seen too many sites recommending storing as a minimum only one gallon of water per person, per day. It is not the longest storage option around, but it might be the best option given the type of emergency one is faced with. In turn, 55 gallons of water can be treated and dealt with using three tablespoons of bleach.
So now that you have an idea of how much water you would like to store up on let’s talk about how you plan to store it.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently documented approximately 83,000 violations of water quality standards by municipal water systems, featuring over 21,000 contaminants, organic and inorganic, over the past 30 years, almost 200 of them already proven to be linked with adverse health effects. Or, if there are no stores like this local to where you live, buying your own water filtration system and running your tap water through a water purifier is another option. PVC can also contain BPA so if you have PVC piping in your house and you run the hot water you are bathing in and rinsing your food with substantial amounts of BPA.
Using just any old container that holds water is not necessarily a safe or healthy way to store water. This doesn’t even take into account the known chemicals of chlorine and fluoride that are put into the water on purpose that have serious adverse health affects. A person can survive for weeks without food but can only last 3 days without water; it’s that important. It’s easy to see how clean water can be taken for granted and just assumed that it will always be there. Also you don’t have to do anything to prepare the water and there is no chance of making mistakes that could cause problems later. Shake the solution thoroughly in the bottle and then rinse the bottle out with clean water.
