From mega tsunamis and major earthquakes to supervolcanos and deadly floods, we look at the natural disasters predicted to wreak havoc on the planet any time soon. A small fishing boat displaced 4,500 miles by the Japanese tsunami has landed on a Washington beach almost two years after the devastating natural disaster. The Washington Marine Debris Taskforce specializes in collecting data on items washed up from the Japanese disaster, as well as cataloging other beach waste in the area. Rescue efforts continued in shell-shocked Japan on Friday night following the country's devastating earthquake and tsunami. And a Japanese coast guard official says a search is under way for a ship carrying 80 dock workers that was swept away when the tsunami struck.
In California, many beaches were closed in anticipation of the tsunami waves of six feet expected to reach the West Coast of the US. The tsunami hit Hawaii on the southern beaches of the island of Oahu, but there were no initial reports of damage.
The quake, one of the strongest ever recorded, left many people injured, police said, and unleashed a 10-meter high tsunami and widespread flooding. Japanese TV pictures showed the tsunami water carrying debris, including cars and trucks, as well as flames rising into the sky near the capital.
Such strong tremors are relatively common in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a volcanic belt which surrounds the Pacific Ocean, giving rise to earthquakes and tsunamis. Someone living in an area that is prone to one or other of these natural disasters will be well aware of the fact, so the most important factor is to be prepared.

The tsunami that hit northeastern Japan following the 11 March earthquake was 15 metres high some areas and it travelled 10 km inland.
Tsunamis are not uncommon in Japan and usually there is a limited amount of warning before they hit. Almost everywhere you look you find references to climate change associate with natural disasters. It is clear that the world is getting warmer, probably due to a natural process, but it is reasonable to assume that this process is being speeded up by mankind's release into the atmosphere of large amounts of greenhouse gas. It is easy to blame every natural disaster on global warming, but meteorology is not an exact science and while in some cases this blame might be quite justified, in many cases these natural disaster occur for purely natural reasons. When it does come, it will cause a mega tsunami that will hit with the power of an atomic bomb travelling at the speed of a jumbo jet. The taskforce reported a spike in tsunami debris between April and June 2012 on Washington's coastal beaches. Hundreds are reported dead in the temblor and tsunami, with officials believing the death toll could rise to more than 1,000 in one of the country's worst-ever natural disasters. Police are reporting the discovery of hundreds of bodies in the wake of the natural disaster that struck the northeastern part of the country. According to the Yomiuri newspaper, they were only designed to measure up to 10 meters -- so it is it likely the tsunami was even higher.
He said the world was "shocked and saddened" by the images of the disaster, and offered whatever help the UN could provide.

According to government spokesman Christoph Steegmans, Merkel wrote to Prime Minister Naoto Kan to express her dismay at the disaster, offering her sympathy to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured. Early in 1953 there was a major natural disaster when serious floods hit countries bordering the North Sea.
These occur with the minimum amount of warning and include earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.
These are usually the consequence of extreme weather events, or are supplementary to other natural disasters. Although this was America's costliest natural disaster, the deadliest natural disaster in US history was the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 that killed between 6,000 and 12,000 people in Galveston. There will usually be some degree of advanced warning, but since weather is unpredictable, nothing can be done to stop these disasters from developing once the weather system develops.
As a result of this natural disaster the number of people dead or missing is put at around 30,000 and the Japanese economy has suffered a major blow.
Again, in areas prone to this sort of disaster, some provision can be made to limit damage and loss of life. Although 70 per cent sank near the shore the rest floated elsewhere with much still out at sea However, year by year the amount is declining.According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), debris from the tsunami is now so dispersed it can’t be seen by satellite.
