A disaster supply kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.
This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours.
Attainable for every person to keep several kits, I have suggestions & data for when the efforts have.
As the media reports on the projected impact of Hurricane Sandy– already being labeled by some as “the storm of the century”– it’s critical to remember what exactly your family needs to weather a natural disaster. People buy water at Whole Foods Market in Manhattan on October 28, 2012 as residents do last minute food shopping in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. A line wraps around the store as Manhattan residents do last minute food shopping in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. Wherever you get your supplies, Hurricane Sandy serves as a reminder that natural disasters rarely give much notice, and it’s wise to at least have the basic necessities. I was fortunate enough to get a position as a Disaster Preparedness Assistant for the American Red Cross in Joplin, MO.
I was lucky enough to give presentations on preparedness and safety for several organizations and local clubs, but the highlight for me was when I got the chance to help design the catalog for a Disaster Academy from the American Red Cross at MSSU, the very University I had graduated from a year prior. I could spend hours relating every little detail of my year as a VISTA, but I feel that the most important thing that needs to be conveyed at this point is that I was (and continue to be) enriched by the people I met during disasters, as well as the individuals I met that make up so many volunteer groups and community partners. Hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods impose an economic toll that can disrupt and undermine a fragile country for a long time. Costs from natural disasters are increasing largely because more people choose to live in harm’s way. A disaster in one part of the world can have ripple effects on many other countries, so it should be in everybody’s interest to try to increase resiliency.

On Monday, we will look at an issue that has really emerged as a focal point for the developing world in the past few years: biodiversity. Additionally, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer. Each family or individual's kit should be customized to meet specific needs, such as medications and infant formula.
Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. I had been an active volunteer for the Special Olympics for more than ten years, and an active Red Cross volunteer for almost three years. In the first month of service, I designed our first Community Preparedness and Safety Expo with the help of another AmeriCorps member.
The designing process was impressive to say the least and we all pulled together to send out a complete and informative catalog of classes and registration forms. I will say this for the AmeriCorps VISTA program, it was an honor and privilege to be a part of this great and amazing program! Building codes are lacking or poorly enforced, and infrastructure is insufficient to send out information before a disaster, or assist victims promptly after it hits. Based on existing studies and research from Stephane Hallegatte, they find that early warning systems in developing countries would require less than $1 billion a year and would have direct benefits (reductions in the losses from disasters) of between $1 billion and $5.5 billion per year. As Kunreuther and Michel-Kerjan point out, there is a need to persuade international donors to start investing more systematically in disaster risk reduction before a disaster strikes, rather than focusing almost exclusively on post-disaster assistance, as they do today. Rethink your clothing and bedding supplies to account for growing children and other family changes. I felt that stopping by the Red Cross and asking for a reference was as good a place as any to get the references I needed, so I went by there and spoke with Emergency Director.

I also taught Disaster classes such as Disaster Service Overview, Sheltering Fundamentals, Disaster Action Team Assessment and field Operations, trained new volunteers how to use CAS (client case management program) to enter legal documents from disaster events.
The Disaster Academy was held in May 2013 and I was lucky once again to get the opportunity to teach classes at the Disaster Academy,  a challenge I humbly and eagerly accepted. The 2010 earthquake in Haiti starkly illustrated what happens when natural disasters strike an unprepared and poor country. In an innovative paper for Copenhagen Consensus 2012 released today, Professors Howard Kunreuther and Erwann Michel-Kerjan from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania propose a series of concrete actions that would reduce the vulnerability of poor nations to such large-scale catastrophes. Costs vary dramatically from country to country: In the Solomon Islands it would cost just $36 million to retrofit schools with cumulative total benefits worth $187 million, but for all other countries the benefits are dramatically lower, meaning that any program of global reach would probably pay back less than the initial investment. Whether it's preparedness for floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, or fires, the key to survival in disasters is planning. I was amazed to find the Emergency Director for the Joplin office was Julie Stolting, who was originally the Health and Safety Director. It's best to assume that in the event of an emergency or natural disaster, roads will be inaccessible by vehicles, and public transportation will be shut down. Use our preparedness section to stay informed, make a plan, and most importantly—remain safe in an emergency. I had two semesters left after the Tornado and I plugged on through with the completion and graduation in May of 2012.
