Native Americans called these storms Hurakons, after “a great spirit who commanded the east wind.” Spanish explorers adopted the word and then began giving hurricanes the names of patron saints on whose feast days the storms occurred. This satellite image shows Hurricane Charley shortly before making landfall in Florida, Aug.
Charley, Frances, Jeanne — those names stick out to Central Floridians who endured the now-historic 2004 hurricane season that affected Central Florida over a decade ago.
The first Atlantic system named by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was Hurricane Able in 1950.
Six rotating lists of names are created at a time; therefore, the list we are using in 2015 will next appear in 2021, unless any are retired. If a storm forms in the offseason, between December 1 and May 31, it will take the next name in the list based on the current calendar date.
The 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially kicked off this month with a slightly below-normal season expected.

The WeatherBug Meteorologists are forecasting seven to 10 named storms to form in the Atlantic Hurricane basin this year. The Atlantic Hurricane Basin consists of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Now is the time for all Americans living near and along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Coast to begin preparing for the upcoming hurricane season.
TALLAHASSEE (WTXL) - The tropics have quieted significantly as we race towards the end of the official hurricane season. Particularly deadly or costly storms will be removed from the list for reasons of sensitivity, so there will never be another tropical storm named Charley, Frances, Ivan or Jeanne.
For example, if a tropical cyclone formed in December, it would take the name from the previous season's list of names. This last occurred in 2005, when six storms formed after Hurricane Wilma and given the names Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Zeta.

Three to five of these storms will become hurricanes, and one to two major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher are possible.
Be sure to create and update a hurricane emergency plan and make sure the hurricane emergency kit is stocked with fresh provisions. The current lists of names alternate male and female, and are of English, French and Spanish origins to represent the primary languages in and around the Atlantic Basin. The long-term annual average since 1981 is 12 storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes. The historical height of the Atlantic hurricane season runs from mid-August to early October; however, tropical systems can form at any time during the season.
