Fill bathtub and other large containers with water to ensure a supply for sanitary purposes.
Hurricane Warning: sustained winds of at least 74 mph or greater are expected within 12-24 hours or less. There is a fundamental difference between the need for systemic change and action across jurisdictions and at massive scales, and the immediate coordination required to meet acute needs during disaster events. Between municipal, state, and federal level agencies, the amount of planning for potential disasters is enormous. Given pre-existing power relations and conflicting interests, OEMs, as coordinating bodies with very little direct authority over the subject areas they are responsible for, cannot solve the problems they are tasked with solving, nor can the plans they produce. But during Hurricane Sandy, plans that took several years and millions of dollars to produce were thrown out almost immediately.
Crucially, this includes climate change mitigation, which can certainly be classified as disaster planning in the twenty-first century. Pocket-sized or in a scabbard antennas, and there is some protection that all natural disasters want the exact same.
With hurricane season upon us, it’s a great time to reassess your organization’s business continuity and disaster preparedness plans. The US Small Business Administration is an independent federal agency that works to assist and protect the interests of American small businesses by delivering the answers, support and resources small businesses need to start-up, succeed and grow.
Back when I was a student, a disaster PR person taught us about how important it is to have a disaster plan.

Founded in 2003, Small Business Trends is an award-winning online publication for small business owners, entrepreneurs and the people who interact with them. Together with hundreds of expert contributors, Small Business Trends brings you the news, advice and resources you need. The Atlantic hurricane season officially began June 1st and forecasters are predicting an extremely active season.  As we enter hurricane season 2013, I find myself reflecting on the last year and the amount of devastation left by hurricanes, tornadoes and other disasters. Disasters can happen anywhere, and with data multiplying by the day, businesses increasingly rely heavily on email, instant messages, social media, and other electronically generated information.
If reading these questions led to more questions than answers, your business is in need of a business continuity and disaster recovery plan.

Here are seven steps that can help you develop an emergency plan and ensure that your business is as prepared as possible for the next calamity. For instance, you may use email blasts, text blasts and voice broadcasting, which allows you to simultaneously send a voice message to everyone's office phone and cell phone. For instance, every employee at AppLaunch has a company credit card with $500
Plan for all outdoor pre-hurricane preparation to be completed prior to the onset of tropical storm force winds (sustained 39 MPH winds). An action plan and well-stocked disaster preparation kit are both highly recommended in coastal zones where hurricanes can impact. Top image: The complexity of disaster planning, as illustrated in the organizational chart for the Regional Catastrophic Planning Team. In the first case, plans are foundational, and in the second case, they may well be fantasies.
New York City participates in various regional collaborative efforts, including the Regional Catastrophic Planning Team (RCPT) that brings together emergency managers from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
Taking proactive steps beforehand will help lessen the financial ramifications of a disaster and help you reopen sooner.
Following a declared disaster, there are several disaster assistance programs that can help your business recover. Typically, disaster loans can go toward the repair or replacement of real estate, personal property, machinery, and inventory that has been damaged in a declared disaster.
The SBA Community is an interactive extension of the site and features a variety of discussion boards and blogs that allow business owners to connect with their peers, industry experts and government representatives to ask questions, share best practices and get advice.

I wonder if businesses that choose not to consider disaster recovery do so because they think it will not happen to them. Cash: Banks and ATMs may not be open or available for extended periods after the storm has passed. Fantasy documents and fantasy institutions are of a piece, and they work together to create the illusion of planning and control. To be eligible to apply SBA disaster assistance loans, you must be located in a declared disaster area. We are seeing more and more extreme weather and more than ever businesses need a solid business disaster recovery plan. Disasters are often out of our control, but you can be prepared with a backup and disaster recovery plan. For retailers and other businesses that often have customers on site, consider installing intercoms to issue instructions to staff and customers at the same time.
To refer to disaster plans as fantasy documents is not to impute hidden motives to the planners who create them. Small Business Administrtion (SBA) provides low-interest disaster loans to businesses of all sizes as well as private non-profit organizations, homeowners, and renters. You can view the current Presidential and SBA agency disaster declarations for your area here.
Regardless of the company’s perceptions, to ensure continuous data protection, businesses need to stop thinking of disaster recovery as an expense but rather a lifeline.
The challenge is to ensure that long-term plans and institutions do not become fantasies as well. Disaster recovery and business continuity planning should be viewed as an insurance policy.
Google Apps provides 5GB of backup space for free, while Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and Rackspace also offer cloud-computing space. The regulatory and jurisdictional challenges that motivate disaster planning are very real. A disaster recovery plan is a company’s ‘insurance policy’ that ensures business continuity.
