Here are some facts about house fires from the NFPA that will hopefully motivate you to come up with an emergency plan for you and your family.
According to an NFPA survey, only one-third of Americans have both developed and practiced a home fire escape plan.
One-third of Americans households who made an escape plan thought they would have at least 6 minutes before a fire in their home would become life threatening. Almost two-thirds (62%) of reported home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. In fires considered large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 92% of the time, while battery powered alarms operated only 77%  of the time. Half  (49%) of home electrical fires involved electrical distribution or lighting equipment.
In 2010, electrical failures or malfunctions were factors in an estimated 46,500 home structure fires resulting in 420 deaths, 1,520 injuries and $1.5 billion in property damage. Home fire sprinklers can contain and may even extinguish a fire in less time than it would take the fire department to arrive on the scene.
They reduce the risk of death or injury from a fire because they dramatically reduce the heat, flames and smoke produced, allowing people time to evacuate the home.
If you do experience a fire at your Orange County home or business, please call us immediately after you call the emergency services. A chimney helps your household air stay breathable…just as your windows and your bathroom, attic and kitchen vents do. However, if you don’t give some thought to it before you light those winter fires, your enjoyment may be very short-lived.

It’s terrible to experience the pain of losing treasured photographs, mementos, family heirlooms, and other personal items, and even moreso if the fire causes injury or death. As you snuggle in front of a cozy fire or bask in the warmth of your wood stove, you are taking part in a ritual of comfort and enjoyment handed down through the centuries. Chimney fires can burn explosively – noisy and dramatic enough to be detected by neighbors or people passing by.
Fireplaces and wood stoves are designed to safely contain wood-fuel fires, while providing heat for a home. To be installed in most jurisdictions in the United States, factory built, metal chimneys that are designed to vent wood burning stoves or pre-fabricated metal fireplaces must pass special tests. If you think a chimney fire has occurred, call a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep® for a professional evaluation.
These fires caused 13,350 civilian injuries, 2,640 civilian deaths, and $6.9 billion in direct damage.
Below is a list of facts about home fires and smoke alarms as reported by the National Fire Prevention Association.
They cannot withstand the high temperatures produced during a chimney fire and can warp, buckle and even separate from the vibrations created by air turbulence during a fire.
Unlike those other exhaust points in your home, however, fireplace and wood stove chimneys need a special kind of care. Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 pm and 7 am when most people are asleep. Your sweep may have other maintenance recommendations depending on how you use your fireplace or stove.

As these substances exit the fireplace or wood stove, and flow up into the relatively cooler chimney, condensation occurs. Another leading factor in 17% of cooking related fires was failure to clean ovens or rotisseries.
The President’s House, as it was called, was rebuilt with sturdier, higher-quality material. Sadly, many of our customers have had to face this situation, and we never get used to seeing it.
Slow-burning chimney fires don’t get enough air or have fuel to be dramatic or visible. During the War of 1812, the muzzle-loading musket that fired a lead ball was the main weapon.
Restricted air supply, unseasoned wood and, cooler than normal chimney temperatures are all factors that can accelerate the buildup of creosote on chimney flue walls. Although the British fired more than 1,500 cannonballs at Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore, the fort suffered little damage. In the case of wood stoves, overloading the firebox with wood in an attempt to get a longer burn time also contributes to creosote buildup.
After British troops set fire to the White House, the Capitol and other federal buildings, the next day a huge storm and a rare tornado put the fires out.
