Since last week was National Hurricane Preparedness Week, it’s the perfect time to review some important hurricane preparation tips.
Family members are often separated when hurricanes strike; it’s important to plan how to contact loved ones well in advance of a disaster. Since communication lines may be down or tied up in the immediate area of a hurricane, identify an out-of-state contact that can relay information between separated family members. Finally, as a family, determine safe evacuation routes and have a primary and secondary inland meeting location to gather in the aftermath of a hurricane.
Because hurricane evacuations are common and you may be forced to survive on your own, it’s important to have a supply of at least 72 hours worth of food, water and other necessary emergency items.
Cover the windows in your home in advance of a hurricane, using permanent storm shutters if possible. Tie down or bring in lawn furniture, garbage cans or anything else that can be blown about in a hurricane. Tropical Storm Erika may not be a devastating event, but it's never too early to think about what hurricane supplies you should have on hand. Crackers: For snacking or eating with cheese and cold cuts from the fridge just after power goes out.
Comfort food: You might as well buy the Twinkies (or Pop-Tarts, doughnuts, Nutter Butters or Little Debbies).
Supplies: Garbage bags and ties, paper towels, wipes, fuel (charcoal, lighter fluid, matches) or a full propane tank for the grill, hand sanitizer.

Here are some common safety questions about how to handle food and water before and after a storm. Do not eat any food in nonwaterproof containers that have touched floodwater because it carries bacteria. You'll face a refrigerator full of rotten food if you evacuate, the power goes out and you can't return home for days or weeks.

Use this hurricane preparation checklist to make sure you have everything you need before a hurricane or tropical storm hits Florida. Food Insurance® recommends that you have enough food and water to last you and your family for two weeks. Or if you buy the bottles, that's eight 16-ounce bottles per person or 56 bottles for seven days. Look for condiments - ketchup, hot sauce, mustard, relish, salt and pepper - in individual packets.
You may already have foods appropriate for an emergency such as bread, crackers and peanut butter.
Thawed foods that do not contain ice crystals but have been kept at 40 degrees or below for no more than one to two days may be cooked, then refrozen or canned. Using this food calculator, you can determine the number of days your emergency food supply will last, depending on the number of adults and children in your family.

If this pop quiz caught you off-guard, take measures now to avoid being unprepared for a hurricane.
For canned foods, discard paper labels and note the contents with a marker directly on the can. If it appears the power will be off more than six hours, transfer refrigerated perishable foods to a cooler filled with ice or frozen gel packs.
Use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need before a hurricane or tropical storm hits your town.
Follow the aforementioned hurricane preparation tips and be prepared for any test Mother Nature may throw at you this hurricane season. Pack only what is essential for surviving the storm and its aftermath.Don't forget to hurricane-proof your digital information. For instance, diabetics and people allergic to wheat will need special considerations since so many shelf-stable foods are carb- and grain-laden. Unfortunately for many others like myself, the surprise caught us off-guard, and we suffered the consequences for our lack of preparation. In general, don't buy food that your family won't eat regularly - it'll still be in the cupboard for hurricane season 2010.
