Please Note that you are viewing the non-styled version of the Ohio Committee For Severe Weather Awareness website. As the severe weather season approaches, take some time during Severe Weather Safety Awareness Week to make a safety plan for your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.
Note: The increase in tornadoes listed from the 1950's to the 1960's is not necessarily indicative of an absolute increase in the number of tornadoes, but is more likely the result of better communications, an increase in population, and more public awareness of severe weather. Some weather radio receivers can be connected to an existing home security system, much the same as a doorbell, smoke detector or other sensor. Whether practicing in a tornado drill or sheltering during a warning, the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness encourages Ohioans to DUCK!
NOAA Weather Radio has available an alerting tool for people who are deaf or have hearing impairments.

If there is threatening weather, shelter vehicles to prevent damage from winds, flying debris and hail. Click on the following pages for more important information about tornadoes and how to get ready for the storms.
The split-panel illustration below shows several mesovortices along a derecho-producing squall line as viewed by Doppler radar.
A thunderstorm accompanied by hail indicates that the storm has large amounts of energy and may be severe. Planning ahead will lower the chance of injury or death in the event severe weather strikes.
A thunderstorm is considered severe if it produces hail at least 1 inch in diameter or has wind gusts of at least 58 miles per hour.

Every year people are killed or seriously injured because they didn't hear or ignored severe thunderstorms warnings. While much of the focus during severe weather is on tornadoes, wind and hail, there are actually more deaths caused each year by flooding and lightning, which are also commonly associated with severe weather. The information in this section, combined with timely watches and warnings about severe weather, could save your life.
If indoors, turn on a battery-powered radio or NOAA Weather Radio to get the latest emergency information.
