For years Audi struggled to gain equal footing with BMW and Mercedes in Australia, but that has all changed and sales have been climbing at double-digit rates for several years now. The interior of this Ford automobile was built to be highly customizable to suit the needs of buyers. With its striking interior and exterior design, outstanding dynamics and unique character, the all-new Ford Ka sets a new standard for affordable small cars.
The information contained this Ford Ka news article may have changed since publication on the 9 September 2008.
The recent launch of the budget A-segment Datsun GO marked the return of the Datsun brand to South Africa, which is all very exciting, but the GO has also raised many eyebrows.
The answer depends on the value you place on safety and how much you can afford to spend on a new car.
I put the Datsun GO Lux model through its paces to see if it offers value for money, but more importantly to gauge whether it will serve the needs of countless cash-strapped car buyers in South Africa.
Let's be honest, the Datsun GO is no stunner, but it has a certain, awkward, charm about it. The styling of the GO attracted some attention with one motorist shouting 'Hey, lekker Datsun boet'. Due to the bench seat up front, the gear lever and handbrake lever are mounted in the centre console, which takes a bit of getting used to.
Boot space is reasonable for a car of this size, offering 265-litres and the rear bench has space for three people, the smaller the better though. Our test model came fitted with an aftermarket radio, but the standard GO comes with a Mobile Docking Station (MDS) which allows you to connect your mobile device to two speakers using an auxiliary cable and a USB port is also offered.
The Datsun GO is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that offers up 50 kW of power and 104 Nm of torque through a five-speed manual transmission.
As a basic runabout, the Datsun GO is an attractive and accessible option for lower income earners looking for an affordable and durable vehicle.
The Datsun GO has had a choppy re-introduction to SA as its overall safety has come under fire.
The base model Datsun GO Mid is priced at R89 500 while the Lux version is priced at R99 500. Gero Lilleike is a published writer and photographer with most of his work appearing in the fields of travel and motoring. Next in line to make headway into the entry level ‘crossover’ market is this Toyota Etios Cross.
Essentially you’re still getting the same Toyota Etios that has been selling around 2 000 units a month locally for the last couple years. The centre display of the Toyota Etios Cross where the RPM, speedo, fuel level and trip metre display look less tacky and the font size has been increased to a legible level. Toyota has certainly improved on what was a decent value for money offering by adding the extra touch of refinement our SA market requires over the Indian market where the car is built.
Firstly the front ‘bull bar’ grille changes the face of the Toyota Etios Cross and gives it a sort of handlebar moustache look. The Toyota Etios Cross’ strong point remains its 1.5-litre petrol engine that really feels peppy when driven around the city. The Toyota Etios Cross does not come with any sort of raise to the ride height, according to Toyota the Etios was built with SA in mind and therefore already had a slight ground clearance elevation. The Toyota Etios Cross comes onto the market at R159 800, those who are keen price watchers may have noted that it’s exactly R100 cheaper than the Renault Sandero Stepway launched in May 2014. Ashley has been riding or driving some sort of motorised vehicle since his 4th birthday when he got a Yamaha PW50. Though the Audi range is extensive and growing even larger all the time the A4, with its smaller brother the A3 at its side, has generally been in the vanguard of the charge. The Audi A4, sold as a midsize sedan, Avant station wagon and two-door cabriolet. Sell your used cars and car parts as car related other materials you can sell on this site. Second generation Taurus automobiles have dropped the manual transmission as well as the four-cylinder engine. It replaces the iconic original Ka, which brought new levels of style and enjoyment to the small-car market when it was launched in 1996. Practical, safe, cheap to run, and friendly to the environment, this bold new model starts a new chapter of the Ka success story.

Much of the controversy stems from the fact that the GO has no modern safety systems fitted and that it recently scored a zero star Bharat NCAP safety rating, but is there more to the GO? Apart from its prominent honeycomb grille with chrome surrounds and relatively bold, compact styling, our test unit came fitted with various aftermarket styling appointments such as wind visors, coloured body stickers, a rear roof spoiler and illuminated 'GO' scuff plates, giving it some flair and attitude that cars in this segment lack. The front seat is a bench, literally, with no gap between the seats and bolstering is just about nonexistent. The interior is kitted out in hard-wearing beige grey plastic with switchgear of the same order. We also managed to squeeze three surfboards into the Datsun GO, which was rather impressive.
The tachometer is incorporated into the Drive Computer and front electric windows were a nice luxury.  Like whisky, the interior of the Datsun GO is an acquired taste and won't appeal to everyone, but it does the job. With the revs limited to 5 000 rpm, you tend to change gears often to find the power but at least gear changes using the joystick gear lever are relatively smooth.
The engine is solid and the overall styling is more exciting than other cars in this segment of the market. Whilst most of us adults grew up in cars even less safe we've come to expect more from our modern day budget wheels.

The 308 Touring is a mainstream model that gives the average punter access to high levels of fuel efficiency, safety, ride and handling, performance and style. The radio unit is standard in the Etios Cross and has been upgraded as well to a modern unit that features Bluetooth, a USB port and an auxiliary jack. The exterior bits though are what Toyota is hoping will get dudes into its Etios Cross and there’s definitely some distinctive bodywork to mention.
The side skirts have got serious sills now with bulging plastic running right the way around the Etios Cross. It accelerates up to speeds quickly, never feels laboured and with Toyota’s quick shifting five-speed gearbox is happy to rev hard all day long.
The standard 15-inch wheels do give the overall height of the Etios Cross an almost negligible increase in ride height if you want to be pedantic.
Toyota is confident it’ll be able to hold the price advantage over the long run, but we’ll have to wait and see who’ll hold out as the winner when it comes to sales.
Crushed by the expense of motor racing, Ashley took up journalism and became a writer for some of South Africa’s best motoring magazines and online publications. Originally launched in 1986, this automobile has remained in uninterrupted production for almost three decades.
Ford Taurus is available in 3 varying seating configurations on models that have automatic transmission. As a result, almost all of this Ford automobile’s second generation features V6 engine and automatic transmissions. Brock sold many of his cars directly to his mate, who also set up a born-again HDT business to build modified Holden V8 road cars.Champion's collection includes almost all of Brock's significant winning cars from Bathurst, or exact replicasHe put together the Champion's Brock Experience museum in Yeppoon, his home town, but because of its remote location the museum struggled to draw visitors and turn a profit. You may wish to check with the manufacturer or your local Ford dealer, before making a purchasing decision. To relate, I drove a VW Golf Chico across South Africa multiple times for 12 years, all in a car that's devoid of any safety features, no ABS, no airbags, no nothing and yet it remains a popular used car.
By modern standards, the bench seat looks a bit odd, yet it's still functional and can split-fold if necessary. Four bulging air vents take care of the air-conditioning and storage is limited to an exposed under-dash compartment and in-door pockets, or on the bench seat next to you. As a city car where speeds are lower the GO probably suits just fine but if you're going to be doing a lot of mileage on freeways or higher speed roads then it may be best to look elsewhere. Toyota says the current Etios seems to be a bit girly and it wants to attract more masculine buyers, hence the muscle flexing bits around this Toyota Etios Cross. The rear end gets a grey scuff-plate as well as a roof spoiler for that boyish rear wing cool factor. Naturally all the diesels are turbocharged, but an increasing number of petrol engines also get force feeding. Several changes were then made up to its sixth generation, which was unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Automobile Show.

Champion sold the collection and this has sparked the move south to the tourist belt.Champion's collection includes almost all of Brock's significant winning cars from Bathurst, or exact replicas, from the 1972 Torana XU-1 to the 1980s Commodores and eventually a 2002 Bathurst car.
The GO's maiden sales figures speak volumes with 583 units sold in its first month, which is mightily impressive, if not surprising.
This test model also came fitted with racy leather seat covers with embossed 'GO' lettering for an extra dose of Datsun attitude. Severe body-roll is evident while cornering and road and engine noise becomes overbearing as speed increases. But, if you are looking for no fuss, carefree mobility, the Datsun GO may very well suit your needs and that seems to be the case for many South Africans looking to buy their first new car.
The roof rack has been added and is not purely cosmetic, it can support a load of up to 50kg – more than enough for a couple bicycles. You may NOT reproduce our car news in full or part, in any format without our written permission. At 120 kph, I felt a bit vulnerable in the GO and the car didn't inspire confidence on congested highways which disturbed me somewhat. The Datsun GO is definitely worth considering if you're shopping in this corner of the market and we advise that you compare the Datsun GO with its competitors. You’ll also note from the pictures that the Toyota Etios Cross isn’t lacking for branding, the new model to the Etios lineup’s name is badged three times on the bodywork as far as we can see. Though the car will generally look after the driver, some of these V8s should probably be kept out of reach of inexperienced drivers as they can be stunningly savage at times.Similarly there is a wide range of transmissions, mainly automatic, though some pure sports models do come with manual gearboxes. In keeping with the hush-hush nature of the move, interested parties first must sign a confidentiality agreement. For this reason, the Datsun GO is not an ideal long-distance hauler but will serve its owner well in the suburbs. That's a pain. And another negative is the difficult removal and replacement of the rear cargo blind. The automatic transmissions come as conventional torque-convertor units, as well as double-clutch and continuously variable (CVT) systems.Audi was an early adopter of tiptronic automatics, with the driver able to use manual-type overrides when they felt that was necessary. We gave up and left it rolling around in the load space, which is large with the rear seats up as well as down.
And get this, there's a CD player tucked away under the second panel.DRIVINGThis is where the new 308 really shines, the diesel Touring in particular. Audi dealers should be able to point you in the right direction. These modern Audis are complex machines and the amateur mechanic shouldn't attempt anything more than the most basic servicing.
We have heard of no real complaints of parts availability or pricing. You may also like to consider the Audi S4 and RS4 sports variants of the A4. All touch points are soft and the switches click positively when you use them.It has a clever mix of new technology and tried and true engineering as well as passing stringent Euro 6 emissions regulations.
Though considerably more expensive, they do give you a lot more performance, both from the engine and the heavily revised suspension, steering and braking systems. But see the above note on insurance premiums before falling in love with one of these stunning machines.WHAT TO LOOK FORInteriors feature quality materials and are built to a very high standard. If not, be suspicious of the A4's previous life.An engine that has done a lot of work or which hasn't been serviced correctly may prove difficult to start and blow smoke from the exhaust when accelerated hard. Check that all gear changes are smooth and quiet and that the transmission doesn't change up or down unnecessarily, or suddenly stop working.
The Australian importer generally fixed cars under warranty, even outside the normal warranty period. Manual gearboxes are generally trouble free. Make fast third-to-second downchanges and listen and feel for crunching.Audis have exceptional corrosion protection and are unlikely to ever give trouble.
So you can use the condition of the paint as an initial guide as to how well a car has been looked after, and whether it appears to have been garaged most of its life.
