Petit has served with the BMV since January 2011, initially overseeing Deputy Registrar compliance in central Ohio and then statewide. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is an internationally accredited agency whose mission is to protect life and property, promote traffic safety and provide professional public safety services with respect, compassion, and unbiased professionalism. As Registrar, Petit will oversee driver licensing and vehicle licensing registration, while continuing to make services more convenient, efficient and cost-effective. Petit was promoted to the position of Assistant Registrar in fall 2011, where he oversaw statewide compliance, BMV investigations, Deputy Registrar contracting, and coordinated BMV’s policy and legislative efforts.
He also served with the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee, overseeing lobbyist registration and reporting, as well as serving as the agency’s lead investigator for allegations of misconduct by members, staff and candidates for the Ohio General Assembly. This mission is carried out by closely interfacing with local, state and federal agencies in an effort to bring resources of recovery and support to Ohioans impacted by the disaster.
EMS oversees the certification of emergency medical technicians and firefighters and provides that these people in lifesaving roles are properly trained, educated and prepared for emergency situations. OCJS administers nearly $20 million in state and federal criminal justice funding every year.
Homeland Security was established as a new division within Public Safety in September 2003 to strengthen Ohio’s commitment to addressing the new threats and challenges of terrorism in wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Through its enforcement and educational efforts, agents have helped reduce the problem of underage drinking.


The Patrol offers statewide emergency response services, investigates criminal activities on state-owned property, and provides security for the Governor and other dignitaries. In spring 2014, Petit served on special assignment for Director of Public Safety John Born, where he assisted in the implementation of the Department’s Safer Ohio Initiative, regionalization of the state’s Emergency Management Agency and other organizational changes.
Past service also includes holding positions with the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services, and the Governor’s office. Ohio EMA agency activities, in addition to disaster response and recovery include: education, training, planning, preparedness, strengthening Ohio's first responder capabilities and improving communication across the state. OCJS identifies justice issues, evaluates programs and develops technology, training and products for criminal justice professionals and communities. OCJS also helps save lives and reduce injuries on Ohio's roads through leadership and partnering efforts with others interested in traffic safety, utilizing the most innovative and efficient methods possible of managing state and federal resources.
