Every Porsche made since 1980 has a 17 digit chassis number with a standard layout and format. Bellow you will find the decoder, and explanation of each of the 17 digits within the chassis number. The first digit of this code is the country of origin, in the case of Porsche this is W which is designated for Germany.
This is a calculated check sum which is calculated from a mathematical formula which uses all the other digits from the chassis number to make a unique checking digit within the chassis number. This is probably one of the most useful items of the chassis number for an owner of the car, so they can know for sure the year of manufacture of their car.
Because the previous 13 digits go a long way to making a unique chassis or VIN number, the manufacturer only needs 4 digits to uniquely designate that particular car. To assist in decoding your Chassis number, I also include a year table bellow so you can easily decode the model year of your Boxster.

VIN Number Plate Driver's Side Door Frame The VIN Is Located Throughout The Vehicle The most often used location for this number is just above the bottom edge of the drivers side of the windshield. As odd as it may sound, if you make a habit of leaving your car keys laying around in plain site, there is a good chance someone will take them and steal your car.
Leave Without Understanding the VIN Number On Your Motorhome, You Won't Really Know What Have. If you are looking to buy a caravan then this is something you should definitely take note of. A caravan VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) number, also referred to as; serial number, CRiS number and chassis number is a 17 digit code that is and has been given to each and every caravan made in the UK (and some of Europe) since 1992.
Using the VIN number for the image above I will now demonstrate how to decode the caravan VIN number. One thing to note about the build year codes; the caravanning build season runs from 1st September one year to 31st August the following year.
I hope will help and has not confused you too much but if you do have any questions I would be happy to answer in the comments section below. Growing up around the family caravan and motorhome business, Josh has gathered a wealth knowledge of the industry.
Your caravan was built during the 2008 season and so is a 2008 model – the 10th character of the VIN dictates so. Can you advise please – does the Vin number system of identification apply to static caravans as well as tourers?
Although I cannot be 100% sure, I don’t think static caravans use the same VIN system.

There was a different VIN number structure used before 1992 which did not contain 17 digits. From the VIN number you mentioned, it could be either a 1992 or a 1986 (M3AB292686) but more likely a 1986. M3AB292686 belongs to an ABI Jubilee Rallyman manufactured in 1991 – this comes from my extensive data base of touring caravan serial numbers used for the purpose of validating insurance claims for The Caravan Club.
The VIN numbers for caravans built outside of the UK do not follow the same structure, I am looking in to finding out more about them. Dawn, The VIN number you have quoted relates to a 2002 Hobby Prestige 620UK twin axle caravan. Only info I have is it was built for a catholic priest and has the name ‘Christstar’ front and rear! Because caravans manufactured before 92 had no real industry standard ViN number structure it is difficult to tell, everyone did it differently.
If I were to hazzard a guess I would say your caravan is a 1987, but I cannot be sure of this. I feel a bit cheeky asking Peter, but you seem to be the oracle with regards to ageing a caravan. Hi josh could you please tell me if you know the year of my van please it is a luna delta i was told it was a 90s van the number is 066510-90 thanks julie. It appears that your caravan is a 1990, the last two digits were commonly used to determine the year. Josh, Lunar employed a dual VIN number system between 1987 and 1991, the number quoted indicates it was the 653rd van produced in the 1990 model range and was manufactured in October.
If you cannot find the VIN number on the windows, you could also check on the CRiS certificate if you have one, or on any service records from previous years.
The VIN number is normally also on a plaque which you will find on the underside of the caravan attached to the chassis member, or next to the entrance door near the ground. That is a question I have as well, since my S260 plans got flushed by the economic toilet, I am considering an '07 Exige S for next year instead and want to know myself. Please pay attention to difference between front and rear or right hand and left hand or upper and lower or outer or inner.
On the option code sticker, as well as on several other locations on a Porsche (such as in the windscreen and the bulkhead) you will notice there is a number beginning in WPO.
This is so that anyone with the software to check a chassis number to be legitimate (such as an insurance company, Police, vehicle registrations department) can know if the checksum digit matches the rest of the chassis number. If you scroll down to the end of the page, you will be able to see a chart showing each year of manufacture and the character for that year. All you need to do is look at the 10th digit of your chassis or VIN number and then compare it with the table bellow to know your model year. Apparently it starts with A again, But I am not so sure that is going to be the whole story.
Prices shown are subject to change and are governed by the terms and conditions of this website.
The VIN number is unique to each caravan and is used by CRiS to keep a track of who owns what caravan. This blog was created to help share that knowledge with new and experienced caravanners alike. I would suggest getting in touch with Hymer themselves or one of their UK dealer representatives to confirm.

If there are definitely no more digits that the number you have quoted then the caravan is most certainly a 1992 or older. It is difficult to tell as pre-92 there was no industry standard way of structuring the VIN. How would someone like me go about getting hold of that data in order to make my tool more effective for people?
I am not familiar with Australian caravan brands so I wouldn’t know where to look for the VIN plate.
By the looks of that VIN number it is European tourer and their VIN numbering system does not work the same.
I stumbled across this site and found that you have helped a lot of people regarding the age of their caravans. It should also have a 10 character NCC type serial number die stamped into the near side A frame chassis member which, on this occasion, should read 90LU027036.
Please may I email you the fairly indistinct photos of the engravings we found on the chassis to see if we have found the right componants…? A number on the part itself is sometimes the same as a parts-number, but most of numbers on the parts themselves make us confused.
It can tell you where the car was made (Porsche have several factories), it can tell you if it is a turbo or non turbo car, it can also tell you if its a convertible or a coupe. When you work out all the combinations, Porsche will not ever exceed their ability to make chassis numbers.
I have included years prior to the production of the Boxster so this page is also of use to other Porsche owners of cars made after 1980. The reason for this is that there is a few things we can learn from the VIN number of a caravan, this information could save you a lot of money! The number given to the caravan is etched on the corner of each window (as photographed).  As I said above, the caravan VIN number can give us some key information that you will find useful when purchasing a caravan. I am trying to find out how to decode European numbers as many people here on the blog are looking for this so check back soon. However, this number is more often than not obscured by the A frame cover and is therefore not visible unless the A frame cover is removed!
VINs are recorded in accidents, insurance records, and when work is done on a vehicle by a body shop, dealership or mechanic. Now waiting for the Highway Patrol to call back about verifying the number and changing the title to reflect the plate. If you are wanting to know what berth a caravan is I would do a Google search for the make and model number and find ones that are advertised for sale.
Can anyone provide me with a good description of exactly where the number or how I need to position myself to locate it? A photo of the location that's wide enough to identify the same spot on my chassis would be great.
