When French woman Mlle Serpollet demonstrated a Gladiator tricycle in Adelaide in May 1899, South Australians saw their first motorised vehicle. Being flat, dry and relatively prosperous, with a limited rail network, South Australia took up the motor car quicker than other states.
By 1921 there were 24 motor vehicles (excluding motorcycles) per 1000 South Australians (Victoria with 16 per 1000 was next in Australia). While by 1939 around one in four South Australian families had a car – now likely to be a sedan rather than the canvas-roofed tourer of previous decades – the Great Depression and the Second World War reduced the momentum of car ownership. On 25 July 1901 the Advertiser could boast that ‘Adelaide now possesses four automobiles, or as they are properly called, motor cars or horseless carriages’.

It was to have a more profound and greater impact upon the state than any other single invention.
California's first half century of automobile legislation portrays a people striving to understand and to cope with their new motor car environment. In 1901, California laws authorized cities and counties to license bicycles, tricycles, automobile carriages, carts, and similar wheeled vehicles.
Owners paid a $2 fee and were issued a circular tag that had to be conspicuously displayed in the vehicle. The secretary of state handled vehicle registrations from 1905 until 1913 when the legislature gave the task to the state treasurer.
In 1921, the powers and duties of the Department of Motor Vehicles were transferred to the Division of Motor Vehicles, part of the newly created Department of Finance. In 1931, the DMV became a stand-alone state department and has remained in this status to the present day. The first steam-powered motor car or rather motor carriage was made by Nicholas Cugnot in 1769.
In 1899 Dr Ferdinand Porsche, then a young engineer at Jacob Lohner & Co, built the first Hybrid Vehicle or more specifically the first Hybrid Car. The Lohner-Porsche petrol-electric 'Mixte' used a petrol engine rotating at a constant speed to drive a dynamo, which charged a bank of accumulators. These, in turn, fed current to electric motors contained within the hubs of the front wheels. Therefore there was no need of drive shafts, transmission, gears, straps, chains,or clutch.


When it first appeared in the World Exhibition of Paris , in April 14th ,1900 , the Lohner-Porsche with electrical motors astonished the automobile world and was an authentic novelty for the automobile fans of that time.
When the load was heavy the battery could be used to drive the dynamo as a motor to assist the engine, or the electric motor could be used to drive the car on its own. By the time the patent was issued, three and a half years later, engines had become powerful enough to achieve this kind of performance on their own. Cheap petrol and advances in ICE and automobile production in general (Henry Ford) gradually killed off the Hybrid "Cars".

This was soon followed by the locally built Shearer steam car, which made its first run down the main street of the River Murray town of Mannum on 5 June 1899. American cars such as the Model T Ford were now more practical and cheaper but remained the preserve of the affluent.
Not until the 1950s did car ownership become a reality rather than a dream for most families. Although the world’s first use of top-dressed sealed macadam was near Willunga on Fleurieu Peninsula in 1924, most roads outside Adelaide were unsealed until after the Second World War.
