The Ghanaian National Ambulance Service (GNAS) was born following the May 9, 2001 stadium soccer disaster in the capital city of Accra.
With a limited coverage area of regional capitals and few districts as of 2009, Ghana’s medical emergency system consisted of 49 government ambulances and a fleet of various private hospital ambulances.
Since 2009, there has been no organization or proper guidelines for private sector ambulances. Despite the quality of services provided by private ambulances, over 90% of people arriving at emergency care facilities are brought in by private ambulances or taxi. As far as my mind’s eyes can see, the number of hearses (a funerary vehicle used to carry a coffin from a church or funeral home to a cemetery) in Ghana is more than the number of active ambulances to convey emergency cases like pregnant women in labour to hospitals.
Hard to reach communities like Bomkpa in the East Gonja District, Ghana, needs an air-ambulance service. Nearly everything in this village built on stilts takes place on or just above the water, including health care. Though the village has no modern health centre, it has a herbalist who solves both physical and spiritual needs of the people. Apart from few towns and cities that make daily news headlines, several communities are situated in the deepest interior of rural Ghana. My observation is that a number of harrowing deaths recorded in Ghana could have, to some extent, been avoided if there were reachable ambulances.
MHC’s research and programmes on Mafi-Dove, unearthed the unique challenges of childbirth in the village. Vice President Mahama announced this when he presented 50 of the ambulances to the Ministry of Health to be distributed to some districts.
In response to recent blames leveled against the Ministry of Health over shortages of ambulances published by Daily Guide on June 29, 2012 the then Minister of Health, Mr.  Bagbin said, “The fact that the emergency medical service system in Korle-Bu failed and somebody died doesn’t mean we should just pick them from the harbor…We are all up to our task, nobody is sleeping and let’s be sensitive to each other’s feelings”. In what seems to be a revealing situation to me, majority of residents in Sogakope, a renowned town in the Volta Region of Ghana, before May 2013 do not know the number to call for an ambulance. A total eclipse of the Sun has not been seen in the continental USA for nearly two generations. Although people may opt for the longer durations in eastern regions of the USA, poorer weather prospects here suggest going west. Prudence may suggest observing from regions of good weather prospects with shorter durations than locations with longer durations that have higher probabilities of not seeing the eclipse at all. Currently maximum total eclipse durations are declining with the 2009 July eclipse longest of the 21st Century. Finally, maximum duration of a total solar eclipse occurs only on the center line of the eclipse path about mid-way between its ends. Read about the Eclipse at Madras, Oregon including circumstance of the eclipse in Part  4.
Community protest action delayed the casting of special votes on Monday in six municipalities‚ although a majority of voting stations opened on time in what the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said was a smooth beginning for the polls. Three motor vehicle accidents and four minor incidents of incorrect ballot papers being delivered mark the start of SA’s fifth local government election‚ with the majority of South Africans set to cast their ballots between 7am and 7pm on Wednesday.
A record 719 222 applications for special votes were approved for the elections – including 315 597 (44%) home visits and 403 625 (56%) votes to be cast at voting stations‚ the IEC said in a statement. Community protest action led to delays in wards within Ratou Municipality‚ the North West‚ Midvaal and Emfuleni in Gauteng‚ Umzimkhulu in KwaZulu-Natal as well as wards within two municipalities in the Eastern Cape.
The IEC said on Monday it had received 28 complaints alleged violations of the electoral code of conduct‚ 20 of which had been resolved or closed due to lack of evidence. One complaint led to the disqualification of an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) candidate on Friday‚ the remaining seven were still being investigated. About UsOn May 7th 1845 the first copy of The Herald was printed, making it the oldest newspaper in South Africa. The ability to offer on-the-spot first response to a health emergency is a decisive element in the avoidance of life loss from emergencies, especially during childbirth or accidents.
The incident resulted in 123 fatalities and brought to light pot-holes within Ghana’s emergency medical services and care.

The Nzulezu Stilt Village is an amazing village built entirely on stilts of central wood, as the villagers call it. Whenever a new baby is born, it is baptized in the lake, which is believed to be a protection against drowning. When a pregnant woman is in labour, she is taken to a resident traditional birth attendant for delivery. How can residents make a call to National Ambulance Service (NAS) when the signal on their phones indicates Togo Network?
Losing life in the process of giving another in a dramatic and painful way has become a norm.
According to tradition, once a woman is pregnant and about to deliver, she must leave the village to give birth somewhere else. We have for long suffered from impositions of beliefs and practices which our forefathers have socialized our generations with.
Just imagine the various ways in which we parade hearses during funerals, and yet it’s a different scenario in emergency cases that require the services of an ambulance. This came to light during Maternal Health Channel Television Series’ (MHC) Community Video Screening in the town. A seven minute duration will not happen again until 2150 June (7m14s) while a total eclipse with a duration near maximum is nearly two centuries in the future.
Not until 2078 will total eclipse durations begin to increase when Saros cycle 139 begins to bring eclipses of longer and longer durations.
This position may often be difficult to access as it was, for example, during the 2012 November Australia eclipse. But he was unable to say what impact these sea-level predictions would have on the insurance gaps for threatened coastal properties. Also, there is no standard training required for ambulance drivers in the private sector and many private sector ambulance drivers only receive in-house training or what is popularly termed on-the-job-training.
The ‘streets’ are woven rafia walkways which attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world in a year.
But if there are complications, the pregnant woman is transferred by a canoe, which takes about two hours, to the nearest health centre in the near-by town for safe delivery.
Villages such as Bodada and Kute-Buem on the Ghana-Togo Border are remote villages in the Volta Region where telecom signals barely reach and the broken, dirt roads lead to more broken dirt roads. Compounding this is the fact that there is no ambulance in Mafi-Dove and surrounding villages.
But wearing my maternal health lenses and situating this peculiar belief within a health discourse, and without disregarding, the wisdom of its initiators, certain cultural practices must be discarded.
By popular demand from the attendees, the District Health Director made the number available but with a caution “do not abuse it.
Although eclipse durations have their maximum values along points on the central line, these durations diminish with increasing distance from the central line. Almost half are approximately three minutes or less (as will be with the 2017 August eclipse).
This will not happen until the remarkable 2186 July total eclipse (7m29s), the longest duration of totality during the years -2000 to +4000. For this eclipse, maximum duration was 4m02s over the central Pacific Ocean and not the Australian mainland.
Until the National Ambulance Service (NAS) Bill is passed private ambulances cannot be considered to function as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as they do not meet the standard of an ambulance.
You can hardly find it on the map.  The village is also unique because the people have never seen a doctor, professional midwife or even a health assistant in the village. During the dry season when the lake is not up to its full level, pregnant women in labour are indigenously assisted in an improvised cloth-made palanquin after traveling in a dugout canoe for one hour to the nearby feeder road for further transportation to hospital. In villages of this nature, there must be a stand-by ambulance to assist during emergency services. Almost all the various tribes in Ghana have a certain amount of beliefs with regard to a dead person.

Annular eclipses occur when the Moon's disk is not large enough to hide the entire solar disk at maximum eclipse.
Unfortunately, this long duration will take place about 400 mi (640 km) east of South America in the Atlantic Ocean, 500 mi (800 km) north of the equator.
Fortunately, greatest duration for the 2017 August eclipse does occur over the mainland USA. The hate and anti-police speech has got to stop because the consequences are real," said Zeigler, who paused briefly to compose himself at the news conference.Capt. If they do, how many Ghanaians know about their services and how promptly do they respond when called? According to them, it is only during polio vaccination periods that one sees teachers (not trained health workers) administering ‘foreign’ drugs to them. The dead person becomes a messenger, conveying messages from the land of man to the spiritual world. Totality is a two minute eclipse on the West Coast with the east coast having 34 seconds more. Thus, western location may again have an advantage since summer storms tend to build during afternoon hours, a common occurrence during summer months. The duration of totality decreases slowly at first with the distance from the central line of totality then increases rapidly.
Although much less spectacular than total solar eclipses, central durations are often much longer. Robert Melton was by himself searching for a suspect in a drive-by shooting when he drove up to someone who matched that person's description just before 2 p.m.
The approximate range in altitude of the Sun in degrees during the eclipse is also shown for both west and east regions. For example, at a distance of 60% away from the central line to the edge of totality, the duration is still 80% of maximum. Even if the fractional distance from the central line is one half, the loss in duration is only about 15%. Being there in time or worst of all, on time to serve as its job demands is the biggest challenge to NAS.
This has affected the nation and the whole of Africa in such a way that, we place death rites among all other things. Hence, observers usually do not need to be exactly on the central line to experience most of the duration of totality. Though every baby is headline news, in Bomkpa for example, every house has a maternal death experience to share. He had also served in the Kansas Army National Guard and was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan before he retired in 2012, according to the guard. Our scant knowledge on culture dynamics has exposed us to many challenges that are affecting us as a country.
Melton had also been awarded several military honors, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster.Melton, whose partner is expecting a child, also leaves three other children from previous relationships, police said. His family has asked for privacy. At police headquarters, people have been leaving cards and flowers, which the department has arranged on a table draped in blue cloth and bearing Melton's photo. Kathryn Courtney, 31, of Kansas City, Kansas, brought a bouquet of yellow daisies Wednesday. She said she had known Melton for nearly 20 years, describing him as "born to protect and serve" and "a wonderful man with a heart of gold.""Officers come to work every day knowing they may have to die in the line of duty," Zeigler said.
In early May, detective Brad Lancaster was fatally shot near the Kansas Speedway, and Melton had served in the police honor guard at Lancaster's funeral.
The shooting also comes as police departments across the country are on edge after ambush attacks left eight officers dead in Texas and Louisiana.Mayor Mark Holland of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County referenced Lancaster's shooting Wednesday, saying that the community is still healing from that shooting, which was the first in the department in 19 years.
