The recent launch of the budget A-segment Datsun GO marked the return of the Datsun brand to South Africa, which is all very exciting, but the GO has also raised many eyebrows. The answer depends on the value you place on safety and how much you can afford to spend on a new car. I put the Datsun GO Lux model through its paces to see if it offers value for money, but more importantly to gauge whether it will serve the needs of countless cash-strapped car buyers in South Africa. Let's be honest, the Datsun GO is no stunner, but it has a certain, awkward, charm about it. The styling of the GO attracted some attention with one motorist shouting 'Hey, lekker Datsun boet'.
Due to the bench seat up front, the gear lever and handbrake lever are mounted in the centre console, which takes a bit of getting used to.
Boot space is reasonable for a car of this size, offering 265-litres and the rear bench has space for three people, the smaller the better though. Our test model came fitted with an aftermarket radio, but the standard GO comes with a Mobile Docking Station (MDS) which allows you to connect your mobile device to two speakers using an auxiliary cable and a USB port is also offered.
The Datsun GO is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that offers up 50 kW of power and 104 Nm of torque through a five-speed manual transmission.
As a basic runabout, the Datsun GO is an attractive and accessible option for lower income earners looking for an affordable and durable vehicle.
The Datsun GO has had a choppy re-introduction to SA as its overall safety has come under fire. The base model Datsun GO Mid is priced at R89 500 while the Lux version is priced at R99 500. Chevrolet is readying a refresh for its trusty Silverado pickup, and these spy shots give us our first glimpse at what might be in store. While Honda gears up to unveil the new Fit to the US market at the Detroit Auto Show next month, back in its home market, the car's crossover cousin is just going on sale. The third-generation Seat Leon has made its debut in Paris, confirming for the assembled masses that its live form is just as fetching as the studio shots we've already seen.
Seat tipped its hand on the new Leon earlier this summer, so we've already reported on most of the critical details.
A familiar overall body shape reflects what we've seen from the new Golf, and follows an exhaustive rework of the Leon, both inside and out. The availability of full-LED headlamps for the new, third generation Leon is a pioneering move by SEAT – a first in the family hatchback class. He adds: "It has extremely well proportioned volumes, with a slight shift of the visual weight of the cabin over the rear wheels, while keeping a very fluid transition between the front wing and the cabin.
At 4.26 metres long, the new Leon is around five centimetres shorter than its predecessor, yet the wheelbase is up by almost six centimetres. The angular line of the headlamps is a typical feature of the new SEAT design language, while also being perfectly integrated into the Leon's sculptural form.
The rear end of the new SEAT Leon has been intensively modelled; the large logo serves as an opener for the rear hatch.
The elegant exterior design of the new Leon continues into the interior, which has a clear, light and uncluttered look.
Describing the interior, Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, Head of SEAT Design, said: "We set ourselves the objective of developing an interior which would give an expressive, elegant and welcoming ambience. The new SEAT Leon uses a new vehicle architecture that enabled development engineers to position the front axle 40 millimetres further forward.
Thanks to advanced construction techniques and the use of lightweight materials in the body's manufacture, the overall weight has been reduced by 90 kilograms compared with the previous version. Depending on the engine, transmission options range from five- and six-speed manual gearboxes or the renowned six- and seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearboxes.
The new SEAT Drive Profile for the Leon FR allows the driver to vary the characteristics of the power steering, throttle control and engine sound (FR versions only) via a sound actuator using three modes: eco, comfort and sport. The entry level is the Media System Touch in the Reference* line, which includes a CD radio with an SD card slot, four speakers and a five-inch touch screen. The Media System Plus systems has a 5.8-inch touch screen with three-dimensional graphics in high definition, iPod connectivity, an optional DAB tuner, and voice recognition.
Sporting a cleaner, purer design, the new SEAT logo represents the precision and elegance of the brand's design language, while also reflecting the company's engineering and quality leadership. SEAT is the only company in its sector with the full-range capacity to design, develop, manufacture and market cars in Spain. SEAT Group employs more than 14,000 professionals at its three production centres in Barcelona – Zona Franca, El Prat de Llobregat and Martorell, where it manufactures the highly successful Ibiza and Leon, amongst other models. The Martorell site also features a Technical Center, a 'knowledge hub', bringing together more than 900 engineers whose goal is to be the driving force behind innovation for the number one industrial investor in R&D in Spain.
Mini recently revealed its new convertible and it will go on sale in South Africa in the first quarter of 2016! The new Mini Convertible is bound for South Africa early next year and will bring fun driving dynamics to the premium small car segment. In terms of design, the new Mini Convertible is defined by a hexagonal radiator grille along with recognisable circular headlamps and rear lights with chrome surrounds. In addition to its increase in size, the new Mini Convertible boasts increased comfort levels thanks to the improved range of the front seat adjustment which makes entry and exit for rear passengers easier. The Mini Cooper Convertible will be available with either 15 or 16-inch light alloy wheels as standard while 18-inch examples will be offered as an option.
Next up is the 2.0-litre turbo petrol in the Cooper S Convertible with power at 141 kW and 280 Nm of torque. For diesel heads, there will be a 3-cylinder, 1.5-litre turbodiesel on offer in the Cooper D Convertible with 85 kW and 270 Nm of torque, or 300 Nm with overboost. A 6-speed manual is fitted as standard while a 6-speed Steptronic transmission will be available as an option.
We will keep you updated as local pricing becomes available closer to the launch of the Mini Convertible in the first quarter of 2016.
It’s impossible because when it comes down to it, the advantages one car has over the other comes down to a matter of personal preference, not quality. Both the Accord and the Camry come equipped with a standard four-cylinder engine or an optional V6.
Both V6 engines are 3.5-liters in displacement, with the Accord producing 278 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque compared to the Camry’s 268 hp and 248 lb-ft. Honda offers a choice of six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission for the four-cylinder engine while Camry customers make do with a six-speed automatic.
The Accord is the better handling car of the two and features a slightly sporty edge that’s not as buttery smooth as the Camry. Calling the Camry and Accord mid-size cars is like calling Shaquille O’Neal a regular sized human.

At 3,170 lbs, a base Accord is roughly 70 pounds lighter than the most svelte Camry, but remember, the base Accord also includes a much lighter manual transmission.
For 2016, the Accord’s exterior design has been refreshed and features an overabundance of chrome, specifically the large strip across the grille. Despite initial appearances, the Camry and Accord are still boxy-shaped sedans underneath all that rounded and creased sheet metal. Behind the front seats, at a length of 38.9 inches, passengers in the Camry are offered about a half inch more legroom than those in the Accord. But a lot of Honda’s technology comes attached to the somewhat complicated HondaLink infotainment system that not everyone is a fan of. Things are deeply muddled in deciding between the Accord and Camry, as both offer their advantages and disadvantages.
What it ultimately comes down to is the slightest of separations and choosing one can be as easy as asking yourself this question. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid takes on the established Honda Accord Hybrid to see which electrified sedan is best. It’s large and roomy, but if driving dynamics are what you want, look somewhere else.
Inch-for-inch, Hyundai and Honda build mid-size sedans that are almost eerily similar, but that all changes when you get out on the road. The fact that the Accord is sportier and offers 3 different transmissions puts it a notch above the Camry in my opinion. New range of diesel engines will return up to 55mpg, now will carry 1400kg payloads, 2.5 tonne towing capacity. The ProAce is built in France as part of a joint van agreement with Citroen, Peugeot and Toyota.
Specification highlights include optional power sliding side doors and a new Smart Cargo system that features an opening bulkhead and lifting front passenger seat base to increase load length capacity by 1.16m and overall load volume by an extra half a cubic metre.
Much of the controversy stems from the fact that the GO has no modern safety systems fitted and that it recently scored a zero star Bharat NCAP safety rating, but is there more to the GO? Apart from its prominent honeycomb grille with chrome surrounds and relatively bold, compact styling, our test unit came fitted with various aftermarket styling appointments such as wind visors, coloured body stickers, a rear roof spoiler and illuminated 'GO' scuff plates, giving it some flair and attitude that cars in this segment lack.
The front seat is a bench, literally, with no gap between the seats and bolstering is just about nonexistent. The interior is kitted out in hard-wearing beige grey plastic with switchgear of the same order. We also managed to squeeze three surfboards into the Datsun GO, which was rather impressive. The tachometer is incorporated into the Drive Computer and front electric windows were a nice luxury.  Like whisky, the interior of the Datsun GO is an acquired taste and won't appeal to everyone, but it does the job. With the revs limited to 5 000 rpm, you tend to change gears often to find the power but at least gear changes using the joystick gear lever are relatively smooth. The engine is solid and the overall styling is more exciting than other cars in this segment of the market. Whilst most of us adults grew up in cars even less safe we've come to expect more from our modern day budget wheels. Today, our spies in Europe spotted the rear-drive car that will become a Toyota thanks to the magic of rebadging. Accounts are penalized for Community Guidelines violations and serious or repeated violations can lead to account termination. Unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in November, the compact crossover is already going on sale in Japan, will soon reach Europe and will eventually hit the North American market as well – albeit with a different name and engine lineup.
The Vezel was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show last month and already has a three-month waiting list in Japan, where Honda projects that 90 percent of customers will opt for the hybrid version. This compelling mix of design, technology, athletic performance and premium quality is certain to seduce existing customers, as well as bringing a new generation of car-buyers to the brand," he added. Rabe added: "Built on the Volkswagen Group's MQB shared architecture which benefits from systematic lightweight design, the new Leon offers an impressive performance, with low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.
The surfaces have been severely sculpted all around in order to increase its tri-dimensional appeal, thanks to the effects of light and shadow. This clever packaging enables short overhangs and enhances the strong visual presence of the wheels, while giving practical benefits such as improved interior space, particularly for rear seat passengers, as well as in the luggage compartment. The slightly wedge-shaped rear light clusters highlight the car's width and are also available in LED technology. The dashboard is unconventional and elegant, with a two-tone design that makes it appear to float in mid-air. The results are a longer wheelbase and a balanced distribution of axle load – factors that significantly benefit comfort and sporty handling. All engines feature direct injection and turbocharging, and have been engineered for low internal friction and fast warm-up.
Its front suspension features a MacPherson front axle with sub-frame, while the rear uses torsion beam suspension for engines up to 150 PS (148 bhp).
The basis is formed by the Easy Connect operating system, which controls the SEAT Sound System entertainment and communication functions, as well as a wide array of vehicle functions, via a touch-sensitive screen in the cockpit.
Style* and FR come with the Media System Colour featuring more in-screen colours and higher quality, with a CD drive and six speakers as standard (eight speakers in the FR).
The drowsiness detection feature recognizes when the driver is losing concentration and suggests taking a break. The introduction of the new SEAT logo across all of the company's visual material and locations will begin from Paris Motor Show in September. A member of the Volkswagen Group, the multinational has its headquarters in Martorell (Barcelona), exporting approximately 80% of its vehicles to 75 countries. The Volkswagen Group production facility at Palmela in Portugal supplies the SEAT Alhambra and the factory in Bratislava (Slovakia) manufactures the SEAT Mii. In line with its declared commitment to environmental protection, SEAT undertakes and bases its core activity on sustainability, namely reduction of CO2 emissions, energy efficiency, as well as recycling and re-use of resources. With its four seat layout and soft-top roof, the new fourth iteration of the Mini Convertible is longer, wider and slightly higher than the outgoing model.
The body is also complemented with a black peripheral surround and side indicator elements. Luggage space has improved by 25% according to Mini, totalling 215-litres with the roof closed and 160-litres with the roof down. Powering the Mini Cooper Convertible is the 3-cylinder 1.5-litre turbo petrol offering 100 kW and 220 Nm of torque. While a lot of the competition is looking to turbocharged four-bangers as the upgrade engine option, Honda and Toyota continue to stick with the more traditional V6 in the brand’s mid-size sedans. Both cars also feature six-speed automatic transmissions sending power to the front wheels. Once again, the Accord holds the fuel economy advantage as, when equipped with the CVT, expect the it to return 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway – a 2 mpg increase in both categories over the four-pot Camry.

The Honda allows more vibrations to make their way into the cabin and even if it does feel like a more responsive car than the Camry, the Accord still doesn’t have the eagerness of a Mazda6 or Volkswagen Passat.
At 190.9-inches in length, the Camry is a large car and the Accord, well, it’s even bigger.
Check off all the option boxes, and the Accord easily eclipse the Camry, coming in a hefty 3,605 lbs compared to the Toyota’s 3,480-lb curb weight. Still, with the LED headlights and larger 19-inch wheels, the Accord does look more modern.
This leads to good sight lines all around; as should be expected in a multiple driver family vehicle.
In short, the Accord is stuffed with extra technological wonders like Apple Carplay, Android Auto, active lane keep, a lane watch camera and rain sensing wipers. The Camry’s primary controls on the other hand, are much easier to use thanks to large, well-marked buttons and dials. Does the Camry with its comfort and usability advantage appeal more to you, or is it the Accord with the technological and driving edge? To relate, I drove a VW Golf Chico across South Africa multiple times for 12 years, all in a car that's devoid of any safety features, no ABS, no airbags, no nothing and yet it remains a popular used car.
By modern standards, the bench seat looks a bit odd, yet it's still functional and can split-fold if necessary. Four bulging air vents take care of the air-conditioning and storage is limited to an exposed under-dash compartment and in-door pockets, or on the bench seat next to you.
As a city car where speeds are lower the GO probably suits just fine but if you're going to be doing a lot of mileage on freeways or higher speed roads then it may be best to look elsewhere. Seamlessly combining beauty and practicality, the all-new Leon is the epitome of desirability. The premium materials and the level of craftsmanship place the Leon squarely at the forefront of the competitive field.
Fine details and precise design, especially in the interior, reflect the high standard of craftsmanship of the new Leon," explains Dr.
Its character lines show pure assertiveness, like for instance the outer shape of the headlamps and tail lamps. Fine details underscore the Leon's high standard of craftsmanship – details such as the large air vents, the controls for the air conditioning and the three-dimensional form of the trim elements. Compared with their respective predecessors, their fuel consumption is down by up to 22 percent.
More powerful variants use a multi-link construction that handles longitudinal and transverse loads discretely.
The interior ambient LED lighting changes according to the selected setting: white in eco and comfort modes, and red in sport. This system incorporates the navigation system, which also shows navigation information in the colour display between the speedometer and rev counter and can be controlled by voice recognition. Additionally, an advanced camera mounted behind the rear-view mirror manages both the Full Beam Assistant, which switches automatically between full and dipped beam, and the 'Heading Control' lane-keeping assistant, which makes slight corrections to the electro-mechanical power steering to prevent the driver from crossing over lane markings. SEAT is market leader in Spain, and in 2011 had a total turnover of more than 5.0 billion euros, with overall deliveries amounting to 350,000 units.
No matter how much rational or irrational effort is exerted to prove the superiority of one over the other, it’s a frivolous task; one side will never convince the other side is wrong. Despite having a bit more power, the Accord also holds a slight edge when it comes to fuel economy, rated at 21 mpg city and 34 mpg highway compared to the Camry’s 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway ratings. That out-duels the Camry’s larger 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit that makes 178 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. Both cars are set up to offer a compliant, easy-to-operate driving experience and any perceived gap in performance shrinks when driven back to back. Both cars come standard with 16-inch wheels, but the Accord trumps the Camry by offering upwards of 19-inch wheels compared to the Toyota’s largest size that caps out at 18-inches. And while on the topic of one-size fits all, the two cars offer a seating position that feels more like the diver is sitting on the car than in it. And it comes with dual screens, the lower of which can finally do more than just display audio information.
Plus, it still comes with a lot of advanced features like navigation, expandable apps, adaptive cruise control and rear cross traffic alert. At the top end, an Accord Touring V6 costs $35,415 while the Camry XLE V6 comes in at $34,775. Claimed fuel economy is impressive too, with the all-diesel engine line-up return up to 55.4mpg.
The GO's maiden sales figures speak volumes with 583 units sold in its first month, which is mightily impressive, if not surprising. This test model also came fitted with racy leather seat covers with embossed 'GO' lettering for an extra dose of Datsun attitude. Severe body-roll is evident while cornering and road and engine noise becomes overbearing as speed increases.
But, if you are looking for no fuss, carefree mobility, the Datsun GO may very well suit your needs and that seems to be the case for many South Africans looking to buy their first new car. Completely redesigned from the ground up, the third generation Leon is packed full of high-end technology, utilising a cutting edge chassis, advanced infotainment systems and sophisticated driving aids. Additionally, the new Leon now has a distinctive signature appearance thanks to the fitment of LED daytime running lights.
The trapezoidal C-pillars are characteristic to the Leon, as are the short, upwards-pointing third windows.
The luggage compartment has a volume of 380 litres, around 40 litres more than the preceding model. The SEAT Sound System has a clear, crisp sound reproduction thanks to its 10-speaker and sub-woofer set-up. So instead of spewing out why one car is superior to the other and extolling tired cliches, I’m going to break down the differentiates these two, however minuscule, so you can decide which car better suits your lifestyle and needs. This allows people of all shapes and sizes easier adjust-ability to find an optimal driving position.
At 120 kph, I felt a bit vulnerable in the GO and the car didn't inspire confidence on congested highways which disturbed me somewhat. The Datsun GO is definitely worth considering if you're shopping in this corner of the market and we advise that you compare the Datsun GO with its competitors.
It will be launched towards the end of this year as a five-door and will subsequently grow with further variants into a fully-fledged family," said James Muir, President of SEAT S.A. This fluid softness does have a downside though, as the Camry is ever so slightly more susceptible to crosswinds.
For this reason, the Datsun GO is not an ideal long-distance hauler but will serve its owner well in the suburbs.
