What is a Soleniod?- A solenoid is the device that controls the flow of air in your air springs or air struts. Depending on the height of your vehicle, the solenoid receives the message allowing air to enter or escape to bring your vehicle to normal height. The first part of this test is to verify that the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid is getting getting a good supply of engine vacuum from the intake manifold. You can use a vacuum gauge if you want, but it isn't necessary since all we need to ascertain is that engine vacuum is reaching the EGR Valve Vacuum Regulator Solenoid. With the engine off, disconnect the two vacuum hoses that connect to the EGR Valve Vacuum Regulator Solenoid. These two vacuum lines can be very hard to take off from the EGR Valve Vacuum Regulator Solenoid's nipples, if they have never been removed before.
You have to be very careful as you pull on them since you could break the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid in the process.
If the vacuum lines are color coded, the line that is green is the one that usually connects to the intake manifold and is the one that feeds vacuum to the EGR Valve Vacuum Regulator Solenoid. The other vacuum line is the one that feeds vacuum to the EGR valve once the PCM commands the EGR Valve Vacuum Regulator Solenoid to come on. CASE 1: If engine vacuum was present after the engine was started and was idling, This indicates that the vacuum line is good and delivering the goods to the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid.
The second part of this test is to verify that the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid is getting power (12 volts). OK, this test can be performed with the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid connected or disconnected from its connector. Connect the RED Lead of the multimeter (with an appropriate tool) to the wire identified with a number 2 in the photos of the image viewer. Connect the BLACK lead of the multimeter to a good ground point on the engine or to the battery negative terminal. Have an assistant turn the key on or start the vehicle and notice the voltage reading on the multimeter. CASE 1: If 12 Volts were present when the key was turned to On, This indicates that the power circuit is good and delivering the goods to the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid.


CASE 2: If 12 Volts were NOT present when the key was turned to On, re-check all of your connections and multimeter setup.

Remove all instrument panel mounting screws and pull the instrument panel back as far as it will go without disconnecting any wiring harnesses. Remove the cross body brace and disconnect the wiring harness from the temperature blend door actuator.
Disconnect the vacuum jumper harness at the multiple vacuum connector near the floor air distribution duct.
Remove 1 plastic push fastener retaining the floor air distribution duct to the left end of the plenum.
Carefully move the plenum rearward to allow the heater core tubes and the stud at the top of the plenum to clear the holes in the dash panel.
Remove the 4 retaining screws from the heater core cover and remove the cover from the plenum assembly. Position the plenum under the instrument panel with the register duct opening up and the heater core tubes down. Install the 3 nuts on the studs along the lower flange and one on the upper flange of the plenum.
If equipped with manual air conditioning, connect the temperature control cable housing to the bracket on top of the plenum and connect the temperature control cable to the temperature blend door crank arm. On 1990-99 vehicles, push the instrument panel back into position and install all instrument panel mounting screws. Install the right and left lower instrument panel insulators and install the 2 hush panels. Unplug the heater core tubes and the heater hoses and connect the heater hoses to the heater core tubes. By this I mean that they get spark at the exact same time from two of the four coil pack towers. Depending on the result of this test, the next test is to check to see if the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid is getting power (12 Volts), in TEST 5.


The third part (TEST 6) is to test to see if it is allowing vacuum to pass thru' to the EGR valve while you're driving the vehicle. If the multimeter still does not register this voltage, you must find out why these 12 Volts are missing. Disconnect the vacuum harness line connector from the ATC sensor harness and disconnect the electrical connector from the ATC servo connector.
Remove the left screw and loosen the right screw on the rear face of the plenum and remove the floor air distribution duct.
Remove the plenum from the vehicle by rotating the top of the plenum forward, down and out from under the instrument panel. Rotate the plenum up behind the instrument panel and position the plenum to the dash panel. Install the 3 nuts below the windshield wiper motor to attach the left end of the plenum to the dash panel and the one nut to retain the upper left corner of the evaporator case to the dash panel. Connect the vacuum jumper harness to the plenum harness at the multiple vacuum connector near the floor air distribution duct. Route and connect the vacuum harness connector to the ATC sensor and connect the electrical connector to the ATC servo connector.
