A few days ago we ran the second in our series of blogs on autism and challenging behaviour  For this blog we looked at toilet training for children with autism. A simple story to help any child who may be anxious about going to the bathroom and using the toilet. The aim of this blog post is to provide a space where we can discuss the various techniques we have used to help children with autism use the toilet correctly. Speaking as a parent of a now seven year old boy with ASD the experience of potty training was a bit traumatic.  One of my biggest issues was not the many accidents en route but the occasional smearing faeces on walls and carpets.
It is worth mentioning that you do need to get everyone to buy into the project.   A consistent message is great. Clipping is a handy way to collect and organize the most important slides from a presentation. Bladder Control - The child completely empties his or her bladder when voiding and remains dry for at least one and one half hours during the day.
Predictable Stooling Patterns - The child's bowel movements follow a regular and predictable pattern.
