The Sorting Hat is a sentient Hogwarts artefact which magically determines to which of the four school Houses each new student is to be assigned. During the opening banquet at the beginning of each school year, the first-year students are lined up and their names read aloud alphabetically. The Sorting Hat was sewn roughly one thousand years ago and began as a normal hat belonging to Godric Gryffindor.
The Sorting Hat, now animated, was able to sort and divide the students into the Hogwarts Houses, and continued to do so for a millennium, being owned by each Headmaster and Headmistress of the school.
Godric Gryffindor's Sword, one of the founder's only other known relics, can be magically pulled out of the hat by any Gryffindor considered worthy, no matter how secure the sword's location. During his second year at Hogwarts, Harry is able to pull the sword from the hat while in the Chamber of Secrets, after showing extreme loyalty to Professor Dumbledore. In 1998 during the Battle of Hogwarts, Lord Voldemort attempted to destroy the Hat by setting it on fire.
The hat continues to carry out its duty each September at the beginning of the start-of-term feast, when it is placed on a three-legged (sometimes four-legged) stool at the front of the Great Hall. They also occasionally warn of danger to come, as in its 1995 song, though it is not known how the Hat is aware of upcoming events. In the next year at Hogwarts, the Hat also played a critical role in Harry's success against the Basilisk. Almost two decades after the Battle of Hogwarts, Albus Severus Potter expressed worry over his own Sorting. The Sorting Hat also appeared to have had a disagreement in the sorting of Hermione Granger, as her expansive intelligence made her well suited for Ravenclaw. It was not hard for the Sorting Hat to place Ron Weasley, as all the Weasley family have been placed into Gryffindor House.
The moment the Sorting Hat was placed on Draco Malfoy, the hat instantaneously declared Draco would become Slytherin.
According to Albus Dumbledore, the Sorting Hat declared Tom Riddle a Slytherin almost instantly after it touched his head. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Neville was able to draw Gryffindor's sword from the Hat, despite Voldemort attempting to destroy it and then used it to behead the snake Nagini. Minerva McGonagall was what is considered a Hatstall, meaning the Sorting Hat took a couple of minutes to decide where to put her. The Sorting Hat considered Sorting Filius Flitwick into Gryffindor before choosing Ravenclaw. That hat also appears to have a sense of humour and expansive memory (as in the cases of the Weasleys all being in Gryffindor, and the Malfoys all being in Slytherin). The small tortoiseshell box, embellished with gold, inside which some small creature seems to be squeaking. The gleaming jet black box with a silver lock and key, marked with a mysterious rune that you know to be the mark of Merlin.
The ornate golden casket, standing on clawed feet, whose inscription warns that both secret knowledge and unbearable temptation lie within.
The smooth, thick, richly purple drink that gives off a delicious smell of chocolate and plums. The golden liquid so bright that it hurts the eye, and which makes sunspots dance all around the room. The mysterious black liquid that gleams like ink, and gives off fumes that make you see strange visions. Once every century, the Flutterby bush produces flowers that adapt their scent to attract the unwary.
Lie and say you don’t know (but hope that somebody else tells Professor Flitwick the truth).
Tell Professor Flitwick that he ought to ask your classmate (and resolve to tell your classmate that if he doesn’t tell the truth, you will). You and two friends need to cross a bridge guarded by a river troll who insists on fighting one of you before he will let all of you pass.
Late at night, walking alone down the street, you hear a peculiar cry that you believe to have a magical source. Proceed with caution, keeping one hand on your concealed wand and an eye out for any disturbance? Withdraw into the shadows to await developments, while mentally reviewing the most appropriate defensive and offensive spells, should trouble occur? It seems that the Sorting Hat tends to place students based on qualities they value rather than qualities they personify.
The Sorting Hat can detect nascent qualities in a student and place them in the House that will challenge them the most and put their character to the test.
A first year is a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who is new to Hogwarts and in their first year of magical education. First years are typically eleven to twelve years of age, and begin the year by boarding the Hogwarts Express at exactly 11 a.m.
Just before the Start-of-Term Feast begins, new students are Sorted into one of four houses (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin) by the Sorting Hat. First year students must take Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, History of Magic, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy, and Herbology, classes that are continued throughout their entire magical education. In Astronomy, students observe the sky with their telescopes, learning the names and movements of the stars, planets and their moon(s). Transfiguration takes place on Thursday,[10] and since the first morning period is Charms and the afternoon is Flying, it has to fall in the second morning period. First years cannot go to Hogsmeade with the students in the third year or above, and are not permitted to have their own broomstick inside the school grounds or join the Quidditch team, an exception being Harry Potter, who was given a Nimbus 2000 in his first year and that same year, joined the Gryffindor Quidditch team. The first years were led into the Great Hall, where they were greeted by the rest of the students, and, more importantly, a shabby wizard's hat on a small stool.
The Sorting Ceremony was followed by the Welcoming Feast. Harry, who had never been allowed to eat as much as he wanted, was overwhelmed by the sheer variety of foods in front of him. In his first ever Potions class, Harry discovered that Professor Snape hated him, mocking him as the school's "new celebrity" before teaching the class how to brew a Boil-Cure Potion.

We’re only two days away from the release of Divergent, the story of a young girl who chafes against custom, forced by her government to fight twenty-three other teenagers to emerge from the arena as the victor. It’s not The Hunger Games and not technically Harry Potter either, but boy is it close.
You might think I’m exaggerating, but before you get all sassy with me, please just take a look at all the ways these stories overlap each other. Oh god i cant believe that they are comparing 3 different sagas, they are always comparing, cant you accept that they are different?
An online ‘Sorting Hat’ system, inspired by Harry Potter, is currently being developed by a Computer Science student in their final year to help prospective students decide which college is best suited to their personality. Differing from its namesake, the program asks students to answer questions relating to their degree, accommodation preferences and the college events that appeal to them. The developers, while keen to stress that the project is still very much at the prototype stage, are hoping it will go on to provide a single point of reference from which prospective students can make an informed choice. Students have described the process of choosing a college as ‘confusing’ and ‘daunting,’ as well as saying that there are too many places to look with insufficient information. One English student was highly complimentary of the idea and told Nouse: “I wish we’d had a system like this. Aniket Datta, one of the project’s developers, told Nouse: “Currently, we are not sure if it captures the most important features to students. A spokesperson for the University of York told Nouse: “There are no plans for its adoption by the University. Perhaps one day it will develop into a system adopted by the University to help student’s choose or learn about the different colleges. Drugs at the University of York: A student survey – fill it out here What is the difference between tax evasion and tax avoidance? When Gryffindor, along with Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff, wondered how they would continue to sort the students when the four were dead, Gryffindor pulled his hat from his head and, along with the other founders, enchanted it with their combined intelligence. It is unknown why this is possible, but is linked to loyalty of the highest regard in relation to Hogwarts. However, he was unsuccessful and Neville Longbottom was able to pull the sword from the garment, ending the life of Nagini the snake. These songs vary in length and content though they generally introduce the hat and its role in sorting new students. It was suggested that the Hat picks up some of its information from Albus Dumbledore, though it is not known whether it would have done so before such an influential figure in the wider wizarding world was in office. It suggested that Harry would have great fame and glory by joining Slytherin House, but Harry requested specifically to be spared that fate. Fawkes had brought the Sorting Hat to Harry's aid in the Chamber of Secrets. This provided him with Godric Gryffindor's Sword, which Harry used to slay Slytherin's Basilisk. He indicated that the Sorting Hat might put him in the Slytherin House, and that its judgement may be faulty after being repaired.
However, it can be argued that Hermione saw a greater challenge in herself in becoming bold and courageous, some of the traits of Gryffindor House. He had many of the qualities associated with the Slytherin house, and he was the last surviving descendant of Salazar Slytherin. During his sorting Neville Longbottom argued with the hat, saying he was best in Hufflepuff. At the beginning of every term, the hat sings a new song (which Ron Weasley speculated it spent the rest of the year thinking up) describing each of the four houses of Hogwarts. It is about to smash, crush and tear several irreplaceable items and treasures, including a cure for dragon pox, which the Headmaster has nearly perfected; student records going back 1000 years and a mysterious handwritten book full of strange runes, believed to have belonged to Merlin. If you knew that somebody was using a forbidden quill, you would tell the teacher before the exam started. A: The Wise, The Good, The Great, The BoldQ: What kind of instrument most pleases your ear?
This is never more apparent than with Peter Pettigrew, who was Sorted into Gryffindor but ultimately turned out to be quite cowardly, self-serving and corruptible. The Hat analyses each student's mind, looking for specific characteristics that it uses to decide where to put each student.
Charms students learn the Levitation Charm, the Softening Charm, the Fire-Making Spell, and, as the exam requires them to make a pineapple dance across a desk, presumably the dancing charm.
They are further forbidden from taking Divination, Muggle Studies, Study of Ancient Runes, Care of Magical Creatures and Arithmancy until third year, and Apparition and Alchemy until sixth year. McGonagall led the first years into a small room off the Entrance Hall and told them to wait until she returned.
Harry was particularly anxious, as he did not feel that any of the Houses as they were described in the Hat's song were right for him. Harry and Ron went down to Hagrid’s hut for tea, where they met Hagrid's huge and fierce-looking dog, Fang.
It’s as if someone read both of those extremely successful young adult novels and plucked items out of each like a grab bag, putting them together to form the story of a girl who chafes against custom to lead her society against oppression. He said: “Thank you to all students and staff who have contributed to the Sorting Hat by sharing their experiences.
It is an academic project [designed] to explore the potential to help students take a broader range of factors into account in making choices about colleges. Ron Weasley expressed the opinion that the Hat spends the entire school year making up its next song. Instead, based upon this choice, the Hat placed him in Gryffindor, where both his parents had also been Sorted. However, as the hat is said to be old and patched from its first appearance, it would seem this worry is needless.
This can be clearly seen when Hermione doubts books and cleverness as the traits of a great witch and instead shows that friendship and bravery are more important.
Almost all of his family was sorted into that house, including his parents Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, and his aunt Bellatrix Lestrange. The Sorting Hat considered Sorting Minerva McGonagall into Ravenclaw before choosing Gryffindor.

Despite its use in the purposes of "sorting," the Hat has been known to urge students to maintain a united front in the face of adversity and danger. There are 27 questions in all, and each user can be asked a maximum of 7, or 8 if the hat can not decide between houses and asks your opinion. Also, as you are both in the same house, any points he loses will be regained by you, for coming first in his place.
Rowling, Sorting Hat wasn't her first idea of how new Hogwarts student shall be sorted into Houses. He was probably placed there because at the time, he admired strong, brave individuals like James Potter and Sirius Black.
Defence Against the Dark Arts classes teach the Curse of the Bogies, the Knockback Jinx, and different ways to treat werewolf bites. Harry noted that Draco Malfoy, whom Harry had met in Diagon Alley, was instantly placed in Slytherin, and remembered what Hagrid and Ron had told him about Slytherin's reputation for turning out Dark Wizards, and that Voldemort had been in Slytherin. Neville Longbottom told the others how his family thought he was a Squib until his Great-Uncle accidentally dropped him out of a window, and he bounced.
Hagrid told Harry that he was overreacting to Snape’s treatment, asserting that Snape would have no reason to hate him. It’s the tale of a young boy who has to come to terms with the fact that he is the only hope for the wizarding world in their interminable battle against evil and…no, you know what? Whether it’s by pulling a Sorting Hat down over your eyes or taking a shot and going into a dream machine, some greater being basically asks your brain where you want to go and why, then divides you up accordingly.
Everybody else is just a normal old sheep, but you’re Divergent or The Boy Who Lived or The Girl On Fire. Just like District 12 was falling apart in The Hunger Games, the city of Chicago is basically unrecognizable in the post-apocalyptic world of Divergent.
What’s a YA movie these days without muscle-building action sequences like Katniss and Tris go through? The whole reason Katniss got into the Games into the first place was because of Prim and her little duck tail.
It’s really important to end up BFFs with the people you start out hating, ala Harry, Ron, and Hermione, Katniss and Finnick Odair, and Tris and Four.
Even if there’s zero chemistry between two characters, their lips must touch in an awkward way at some point during the film.
It is possible the system may remain live on completion of the student’s dissertation though it will not remain on the University servers.
When Harry spoke to the Hat in his second year, it repeated its earlier declarations - that Harry would have done well in Slytherin. Neville was intimidated by Gryffindor's reputation, however his persistance did not work and the hat successfully sorted him into Gryffindor.
Later, she became a teacher at Hogwarts and head of her old house, and places the Sorting Hat on the heads of new students. Its songs can be used in warning of troubles to come, and ultimately the hat represents the unity of the four houses under the Hogwarts school. Generally, a set of a few questions can be given to a user for each question, there are, of course, occasional exceptions to the order. He draws you to one side after his lesson and asks you whether or not your classmate used a forbidden quill. Though it is possible Pettigrew was placed in Gryffindor because he aspired to these qualities. From there, first year students are accompanied by the Keeper of Keys and Grounds (or another suitable teacher if they are absent), along a shady path that leads to a fleet of small boats, which sail themselves across the Black Lake before arriving at a small landing stage near the base of Hogwarts Castle; they then await their turn to be Sorted into their houses. After the feast, the headmaster says a few more words; if he or she is feeling particularly festive, they will direct the students as they sing the school song, such as the year Harry Potter came to Hogwarts. When Harry put on the Hat, it slipped down past his eyes, and the hat told him that he "would do well in Slytherin". Hagrid and Ron began to talk about Ron's brother Charlie, and Harry picked up a cutting from the Daily Prophet that was lying on the table.
And it’s the same thing for Abnegation — what exactly is supposed to be appealing about wearing gray and never getting to do what you want? It speaks inside of the hat with a small, quiet voice to the wearer, using Legilimency to interpret their thoughts and respond to them.[1] After a moment of consideration, the hat announces its choice aloud for all to hear, and the student joins the selected house. This is thought to be due to the fragment of Voldemort's soul which lived inside Harry during his sorting; the hat would have registered its potential as well as Harry's. Dumbledore used his wand as a conductor's baton, conjuring a ribbon that floated in the air, forming the words for the students to sing along with, each singing to the tune of their choice. In History of Magic, students learn the names and dates of various famous events and people, including Emeric the Evil, Uric the Oddball, the Warlock's Convention of 1709, the inventor of the self-stirring cauldron, various goblin rebellions, and the uprise of Elfric the Eager. After the last morsels melted from the golden plates and goblets, Dumbledore gave a speech welcoming the new students to the school and the old students back. The article detailed a break-in that occurred on Harry's birthday at Gringotts bank, in Vault 713, the same vault Hagrid visited with Harry on their trip to Diagon Alley.
Aniket is following a design process involving talking to current students about what they think of the project. The moment of consideration varies in length, from over five minutes (known as "hatstall") to less than a second. Transfiguration students must take complex notes before learning the spell to turn a match into a needle, the mouse into snuffbox spell, and the Switching Spell. He added a few warnings about staying away from the Forbidden Forest, and avoiding the third-floor corridor before leading the school in singing the School Song and sending everyone off to their dormitories. That is not the same as adopting the project as part of the University’s policy to support incoming students.
