Distinguish between targeted marketing and mass marketing and explain what led to the rise of each. Choosing select groups of people and organizations to sell to is called targeted marketingChoosing select groups of people to sell to., or differentiated marketing. The story of General Motors raises an important point, which is that segmenting and targeting markets doesna€™t necessarily mean a€?skinnying downa€? the number of your customers. Technology is also making it easier for even small companies and entrepreneurs to gather information about potential customers. Getting a read on potential target markets doesna€™t necessarily have to involve technology, though. Healthy Choice frozen dinners were conceived as a result of questioning potential customers.
Finding and attracting new customers is generally far more difficult than retaining your current customers. The most recent economic downturn drove home the point of making the most of onea€™s current customers. This is the situation in which the adventure-based travel firm Backroads found itself in 2009.
In addition to studying their buying patterns, firms also try to get a better read on their customers by surveying them or hiring marketing research firms to do so. Many firmsa€”even small onesa€”are using Facebook to develop closer relationships with their customers. One-to-one marketing is an idea proposed by Don Peppers and Martha Rogers in their 1994 book The One to One Future. Listen to Apurva Ghelani, a senior sales engineer, from the marketing company Air2Web, discuss how companies like NASCAR get permission from consumers to them send advertisements via their wireless devices.
Choosing select groups of people to sell to is called targeted marketing, or differentiated marketing. Using the shotgun and rifle analogy, how do mass marketing, targeted marketing, and one-to-one marketing compare with one another?
Outline the steps companies need to take to engage in one-to-one marketing with their customers.
As you learned in Chapter 4 "Business Buying Behavior", sellers can choose to pursue consumer markets, business-to-business (B2B) markets, or both. In Chapter 3 "Consumer Behavior: How People Make Buying Decisions", we mentioned that certain factors drive consumers to buy certain things. Table 5.1 "Common Ways of Segmenting Buyers" shows some of the different types of buyer characteristics used to segment markets. Behavioral segmentationDividing people and organization into groups according to how they behave with or act toward products.
Watch the YouTube video to see a vintage Colgate toothpaste ad that describes the producta€™s various benefits to consumers. Another way in which businesses segment buyers is by their usage ratesa€”that is, how often, if ever, they use certain products. Encouraging consumers to use your products for multiple purposes is a smart marketing strategy. Segmenting buyers by tangible, personal characteristics such as their ages, incomes, ethnicity, family sizes, and so forth is called demographic segmentationSegmenting buyers by tangible, personal characteristics such as their ages, incomes, ethnicity, family sizes, and so forth.. Demographics are commonly utilized to segment markets because a mountain of demographic information is publicly available in databases around the world. The video game market is very proud of the fact that along with Generation X and Generation Y, so many older Americans still play video games. Staying abreast of changing demographics can be a matter of life or death for many companies.
Companies have to not only develop new products designed to appeal to Generations X and Y but also find new ways to reach them. Tweens might appear to be a very attractive market when you consider they will be buying products for years to come. The makers of upscale products such as Rolexes and Lamborghinis aim their products at high-income groups. In addition to segmenting by gender, market researchers might couple peoplea€™s genders along with their marital statuses and other demographic characteristics. Family life cycleThe stages families go through over time and how it affects peoplea€™s buying behavior. Keep in mind that although you might be able to isolate a segment in the marketplace, including one based on family life cycle, you cana€™t make necessarily make assumptions about what the people in it will want. But like the trend toward larger cars, the trend toward larger houses appears to be reversing. Ita€™s no secret that the United States is becominga€”and will continue to becomea€”more diverse. As you can guess, even within various ethnic groups there are many differences in terms of the goods and services buyers choose. You could go so far as to break down segments to the individual level (which is the goal behind one-to-one marketing).
Type in your zip code, and you will see customer profilesThe description of a type of customer based on market segmentation criteria.
The tourism bureau for the state of Michigan was able to identify different customer profiles and target them using PRIZM.
Virgin Mobile is helping stores capitalize on proximity marketing by sending text messages to Virgin Mobile users when they opt to receive them.
Proximity marketingThe process of segmenting buyers geographically and target them within a few hundred feet of a business businesses using wireless technology. To learn about how proximity marketing works at a real company, listen to Apurva Ghelani in this audio clip.
In addition to figuring out where to locate stores and advertise to customers in that area, geographic segmentation helps firms tailor their products.
If your offering fulfills the needs of a specific demographic group, then the demographic can be an important basis for identifying groups of consumers interested in your product. Psychographic segmentationSegmenting people by their activities, interests, opinion, attitudes, values, and lifestyles. The segmenting techniques wea€™ve discussed so far in this section require gathering quantitative informationa€”data, in other words.
Best Buy asked store employees to develop insight about local consumer groups in order to create special programs and processes for them.
Intuit, the company that makes the tax software Quicken, has a a€?follow me homea€? program.
Many of the same bases used to segment consumer markets are also used to segment B2B markets. When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. The TILA-RESPA integrated disclosure rule replaces four disclosure forms with two new ones. Ensures compliance with Federal consumer financial laws by supervising market participants and bringing enforcement actions when appropriate.
Provides, through a variety of initiatives and methods, information to consumers that will allow them to make decisions that are best for them. The CFPB is a 21st century agency that helps consumer finance markets work by making rules more effective, by consistently and fairly enforcing those rules, and by empowering consumers to take more control over their economic lives. Inform the public, policy makers, and the CFPB’s own policy-making with data-driven analysis of consumer finance markets and consumer behavior. Strategies and investments that lay out the actions we will take to accomplish our outcomes. Prior to Congress enacting the Dodd-Frank Act, consumer financial protection had not been the primary focus of any one federal agency, and no agency could set the rules for the entire financial market. Industry structure is always changing, and therefore, so too will the number of institutions that fall under the CFPB’s supervisory authority.
Develop and maintain an efficient fact-based approach to developing, evaluating, revising, and finalizing regulations. Develop a rule-writing team with highly advanced skills in relevant and specialized legal and business areas.
Work with consumers and industry stakeholders on developing regulations to implement existing Federal consumer financial laws effectively.
Far too often, I find practitioners who have set “glass ceilings” for their clients, often citing the client’s complexities of need or lack of motivation as the reasons why they cannot progress any further.
A concept that has gained great ground over the last few years is that of ‘recovery capital’; a term used to describe the collection of personal, social and community resources that are available to individuals to help start and sustain recovery journeys. I get up in the morning because I have to, I have a vested interest in my work and my family – this is part of my capital. If the individual suffering with addiction had no resources, no social buy in, why would they give up the one thing that in the short term comforts them and provides them with some purpose or connection?
The New Economics Foundation (NEF) was commissioned to develop a set of evidence-based actions to improve personal wellbeing.
Holt Lundstad et al (2010) showed that having supportive relationships was a bigger predictor in decreasing mortality than giving up smoking. Connecting or being connected works on a multiplicity of levels and is both intra (within) and interpersonal (between).  For the person suffering with addiction, it is about building or utilising existing networks of support, be that through family, friends, peers, mutual aid groups, the wider recovery community, community groups and associations.
For the counsellor and psychotherapist, ‘connect’, is as much about how they connect to the client as to how they are connected in their own lives. From a holistic perspective, it goes without saying that diet and physical activity play a key part in wellbeing and addiction recovery. Finally, it is worth noting the significance of reframing recovery as a “learning process”  with opportunities to gain mastery over new skills, do what is important and experience greater autonomy with plenty of opportunities to give back and engage in altruistic activities. The team at Emerging Horizons offer cutting edge recovery solutions underpinned by a vigorous commitment to supporting the development of world-class recovery support services in the UK.

Not everyone needs homeownersa€™ insurance, not everyone needs physical therapy services, and not every organization needs to purchase vertical lathes or CT scanners. Ford pioneered the modern-day assembly line early in the twentieth century, which helped him cost-effectively pump out huge numbers of identical Model T automobiles. In fact, it can help you enlarge your customer base by giving you information with which to successfully adjust some component of your offeringa€”the offering itself, its price, the way you service and market it, and so on. Figuring out a€?whoa€™s whoa€? in terms of your customers involves some detective work, thougha€”often market research. As we explained in Chapter 3 "Consumer Behavior: How People Make Buying Decisions", companies are now using the Internet to track peoplea€™s Web browsing patterns and segment them into groups that can be marketed to. Your own personal experience and talking to would-be buyers is an important part of the puzzle.
The food-maker ConAgra launched the dinners in the late 1980s after its CEO, Charlie Harper, suffered a heart attack. Finding customers, getting to know them, and figuring out what they really want is a difficult processa€”one thata€™s fraught with trial and error.
During the downturn, new customers were hard to find, and firmsa€™ advertising and marketing budgets were cut. The California-based company increased its revenues by creating a personalized marketing campaign for people who had done business with Backroads in the past. Hansen Cakes, a Beverly Hills (California) bakery, has about two thousand customers who visit its Facebook page. Not all firms are equal in the minds of consumers, who will choose to do business with some companies rather than others. In terms of our shotgun versus rifle approach, you can think of one-to-one marketing as a rifle approach, but with an added advantage: now you have a scope on your rifle. Gather all the information you can about your current customers, including their buying patterns, likes, and dislikes. Determine who your best customers are in terms of what they spend and will spend in the future (their customer lifetime value), and how easy or difficult they are to serve.
Find ways and mediums in which to talk to customers about topics theya€™re interested in and enjoy. Mass marketing, or undifferentiated marketing, involves selling the same product to everyone.
Consequently, one obvious way to begin the segmentation process is to segment markets into these two types of groups.
Notice that the characteristics fall into one of four segmentation categories: behavioral, demographic, geographic, or psychographic. For example, the entertainment and gaming company Harraha€™s gathers information about the people who gamble at its casinos. This section will discuss some prominent demographic characteristics used to segment buyers, including age, income, gender, and family life cycles. The baby boomer generation is the second largest, and over the course of the last thirty years or so, has been a very attractive market for sellers. By contrast, the members of Generation Y have a lifetime of buying still ahead of them, which translates to a lot of potential customer lifetime value (CLV) for marketers if they can capture this group of buyers. Although ita€™s hard to be all things to all people, many companies try to broaden their customer bases by appealing to multiple generations so they dona€™t lose market share when demographics change. People in these generations not only tend ignore traditional advertising but also are downright annoyed by it.
But would you change your mind if you knew that baby boomers account for 50 percent of all consumer spending in the United States?
Peoplea€™s incomes also tend to reflect their education levels, occupation, and social classes.

However, a growing number of firms today are aiming their products at lower-income consumers. Companies are aware that many consumers want to be in higher income groups and behave like they are already part of them (recall the reference groups discussed in Chapter 3 "Consumer Behavior: How People Make Buying Decisions").
As we explained in Chapter 3 "Consumer Behavior: How People Make Buying Decisions", men and women have different physiological and other needs. For, example, did you know that more women in America than ever before (51 percent) now live without spouses? High energy costs, the credit crunch, and concern for the environment are leading people to demand smaller houses. If youa€™ve visited a grocery store that caters to a different ethnic group than your own, you were probably surprised to see the types of products sold there. Consequently, painting each group with a broad brush would leave you with an incomplete picture of your buyers.
However, doing so would be dreadfully expensive, notes Juan Guillermo Tornoe, a marketing expert who specializes in Hispanic marketing issues.
Michigana€™s biggest travel segment are Chicagoans in certain zip codes consisting of upper-middle-class households with childrena€”or the a€?kids in cul-de-sacsa€? group, as Claritas puts it. Ghelani is a senior sales engineer for Air2Web, a company that helps businesses promote their brands and conduct transactions with people via their mobile phones. Chances are you wona€™t be able to find the same heavy winter coat you see at a Walmart in Montana at a Walmart in Florida because of the climate differences between the two places.
Motivated by the desire for achievement, Achievers have goal-oriented lifestyles and a deep commitment to career and family. Quantitative information can be improved with and qualitative information you gather by talking to your customers and getting to know them. Employees in one locale invited a group of retirees to their store to explain how to make the switch to digital television. Teams of engineers from Intuit visit peoplea€™s homes and spend a couple of hours watching consumers use Quicken. Most people believe that if their morning is fresh, then their whole day will pass happily. We take in data, manage it, store it, share it appropriately, and protect it from unauthorized access. The CFPB is designed to be agile and adjust its approach to supervising the financial industry in order to respond rapidly to changing consumer needs.
I see it as my job, and that of any counsellor or psychotherapist, to hold hope for the individual seeking recovery, until it can be fully internalised and experienced by the individual, whose current perception of themselves is often one of failure, helplessness and shame. Relationships and community ties are some of the things that help me to manage and adapt to adversity and the unexpected. This is especially pertinent when the individual is highly self-critical, may lack confidence or is trying to find evidence to confirm their self-limiting view of themselves and the world. The NEF completed a large scale analysis of research on wellbeing, with a particular focus on ‘Positive Psychology’.
Last week I was training a recovery coach, who self-managed his own recovery, exclusively using the 5TWB, monitoring his life around these 5 core behaviours.
The importance of authentic relationships (quantity and quality) is essential to wellbeing. It is also about overcoming the possible barriers to relationship and connection: shame, stigma, attachment difficulties, limiting core beliefs, issues of trust, pride and social competence.
Paradoxically the greater our sense of belonging, the greater our sense of autonomy is likely to be. For me, the application of mindfulness based psychologies and teaching to support the maintenance of recovery, resilience and wellbeing is also key and should now be the norm and a definite in any credible relapse prevention program.

The process of breaking down all consumers into groups of potential buyers with similar characteristics is called market segmentationThe process of breaking down all consumers into groups of potential buyers with similar characteristics..
Mass marketingSelling the same product to all consumers., or undifferentiated marketing, came first. Sloan began to segment consumers in the automobile marketa€”to divide them up by the prices they wanted to pay and the different cars they wanted to buy. Even small businesses are able to do this cost effectively now because they dona€™t need their own software and programs. Go where you think would-be buyers goa€”restaurants, malls, gyms, subways, grocery stores, daycare centers, and offices.
Think about how much time and energy you spend when you switch your business from one firm to anothera€”even when youa€™re buying something as simple as a haircut. Thata€™s why ita€™s so important to get to know and form close relationships with your current customers.
Expensive, untargeted, shotgunlike marketing campaigns that would probably produce spotty results were out of the question.
The firm looked at information such as customersa€™ past purchases, the seasons in which they took their trips, the levels of activity associated with them, and whether or not the customers tended to vacation with children. For example, if you sign up to become a frequent flier with a certain airline, the airline will likely ask to you a number of questions about your likes and dislikes. During her downtime at the bakery, employee Suzi Finer posts a€?cakes updatesa€? and photos of the goodies shea€™s working on to the site. In 2004, Best Buy got a lot of attention (not all of it good) when it was discovered the company had categorized its buyers into a€?personas,a€? or types of buyers, and created customized sales approaches for each. We would all be able to get exactly what we want from sellers, and our relationships with them would be collaborative, rather than adversarial. For example, will you use higher customer satisfaction ratings, increased revenues earned per customer, number of products sold to customers, transaction costs, or another measure? When conducting business with them, include an a€?opt ina€? question that allows you to legally gather and use their phone numbers and e-mail addresses so as to can remain in contact with them. Identify and target customers that spend only small amounts with you but large amounts with your competitors. A firm will often use multiple segmentation basesCriteria used to classify buyers., or criteria to classify buyers, to get a fuller picture of its customers and create real value for them. Benefits segmentationa€”segmenting buyers by the benefits they want from productsa€”is very common.
High rollers, or people who spend a lot of money, are considered a€?VIPs.a€? VIPs people get special treatment, including a personal a€?hosta€? who looks after their needs during their casino visits.
But after Avon discovered that some people were using it as a mosquito repellant, the company began marketing it for that purpose. Other demographic characteristics include occupation, education, nationality, religion, and social class. Miller and Kelli Washington, The 2009 Entertainment, Media & Advertising Market Research Handbook, 10th ed. Retro brandsOld brands or products companies a€?bring backa€? for a period of time.a€”old brands or products that companies a€?bring backa€? for a period of timea€”were aimed at baby boomers during the recent economic downturn. However, a recent survey found that the latest recession had forced teens to change their spending habits and college plans and that roughly half of older Generation Yers reported they had no savings.a€?Generation Y Lacking Savings,a€? Fort Worth Star-Telegram, September 13, 2009, 2D.
Several companies have introduced lower-cost brands targeting Generation Xers, who have less spending power than boomers. General Motors (GM) has sought to revamp the century-old company by hiring a new younger group of managersa€”managers who understand how Generation X and Y consumers are wired and what they want. To market to Scion drivers, who are generally younger, Toyota created Scion Speak, a social networking site where they can communicate, socialize, and view cool new models of the car. The fastest-growing product in the financial services sector is prepaid debit cards, most of which are being bought and used by people who dona€™t have bank accounts. Mercedes Benza€™s cheaper line of a€?Ca€? class vehicles is designed to appeal to these consumers. Can you think of any marketing opportunities this might present?Thomas Barry, Mary Gilly, and Lindley Doran, a€?Advertising to Women with Different Career Orientations,a€? For example, if you have no children, your demand for pediatric services (medical care for children) is likely to be slim to none. Many people of Asian descent are known to be early adapters of new technology and have above-average incomes. For example, although the common ancestral language among the Hispanic segment is Spanish, Hispanics trace their lineages to different countries. Moreover, both the Asian and Hispanic market segments include new immigrants, people who immigrated to the United States years ago, and native-born Americans.
Before you open the store, you will probably want to do some research to determine which geographical areas have the best potential. Table 5.4 "An Example of Geodemographic Segmentation for 76137 (Fort Worth, TX)" shows the profiles of buyers who can be found the zip code 76137a€”the a€?Brite Lites, Lia€™l Citya€? bunch, Home Sweet Homea€? set, and so on.
The bureau was also able to identify segments significantly different from the Chicago segment, including blue-collar adults in the Cleveland area who vacation without their children. In some areas, you can switch your mobile phone to a a€?discoverable mode,a€? while youa€™re shopping and, if you want, get ads and deals from stores as you pass by them. Recall that we first mentioned psychographics in Chapter 3 "Consumer Behavior: How People Make Buying Decisions".
Because they have such abundant resources, they exhibit all three primary motivations in varying degrees. They are mature, satisfied, comfortable, and reflective people who value order, knowledge, and responsibility.
Their social lives reflect this focus and are structured around family, their place of worship, and work. As young, enthusiastic, and impulsive consumers, Experiencers quickly become enthusiastic about new possibilities but are equally quick to cool. They are conservative, conventional people with concrete beliefs based on traditional, established codes: family, religion, community, and the nation. Because they are motivated by achievement, Strivers are concerned about the opinions and approval of others. They express themselves and experience the world by working on ita€”building a house, raising children, fixing a car, or canning vegetablesa€”and have enough skill and energy to carry out their projects successfully.
With few resources with which to cope, they often believe that the world is changing too quickly.
A number of people start their morning with a number of different customs and rituals so that the whole day should be blessed.
The Bureau is developing targeted outreach to groups that face particular challenges, as required by the Dodd-Frank Act.
Our aim is to use data purposefully, to analyze and distill data to enable informed decision-making in all internal and external functions. We strive to be recognized as an innovative, 21st century agency whose approach to technology serves as a model within government. Hope can be nurtured by exposure to success – people who have done it themselves and where recovery is visable.
Having come up with a list of the key common findings, they were tasked with reducing these down to a simple and workable message that would support people to adopt behaviours that promote wellbeing, in a similar way that the public health message of ‘5 a day’ aims to encourage healthier eating. It is especially important for individuals addressing an addiction where their social needs and identity may be intimately linked to the culture of addiction they have lived in – with its rituals, beliefs, roles and relational networks. Because connection is so important, I would suggest that a more proactive approach to working with the client’s network of support is called for. He has worked across a range of substance misuse and mental health services; spanning areas such as engagement, medical and non-medical community treatment and residential rehabilitation. In other words, in terms of your potential buyers, not all of them are a€?created equal.a€? Some customers are more equal than others, however. The key question you have to ask yourself when segmenting markets is, What groups of buyers are similar enough that the same product or service will appeal to all of them?Bruce R. But when the firm looked more closely at who was downloading games from its Web site, they were people from all over the globe.
Thata€™s when Harper realized there were people like him who wanted healthy convenience foods, so he began talking to them about what they wanted. If you arena€™t happy with your hair and want to find a new hairdresser, you first have to talk to people with haircuts you like or read reviews of salons. Consequently, many organizations chose to focus their selling efforts on their current customers.John Birchall, a€?Value Trend Tests Brand Loyalty,a€? Financial Times, March 31, 2009, 12. The company then created three relevant trip suggestions for each customer based on the information. This information will then be entered into a customer relationship management (CRM) system, and you might be e-mailed special deals based on the routes you tend to fly. Along with information about the cakes, Finer extends special offers to customers and mixes in any gossip about Hollywood celebrities shea€™s spotted in the area. For example, an upper-middle-class woman was referred to as a a€?Jill.a€? A young urban man was referred to as a a€?Buzz.a€? And pesky, bargain-hunting customers that Best Buy couldna€™t make much of a profit from?
Finding and attracting new customers is generally far more difficult than retaining onea€™s current customers, which is why organizations try to interact with and form relationships with their current customers. Companies are interested in frequent users because they want to reach other people like them.
Eventually, Avon created a separate product called Skin So Soft Bug Guard, which competes with repellents like Off!
Youa€™re probably familiar with some of the age groups most commonly segmented in the United States.
For example, kitchenware and home-furnishings company Williams-Sonoma opened the Elm Street chain, a less-pricey version of the Pottery Barn franchise.
Many of the companiesa€™ buyers were older Americans inclined to a€?buy American.a€? These people hadna€™t forgotten that Japan bombed Pearl Harbor during World War II and werena€™t about buy Japanese vehicles. Online events such as the fashion shows broadcast over the Web are also getting the attention of younger consumers, as are text, e-mail, and Twitter messages they can sign up to receive so as to get coupons, cash, and free merchandise.

Firms are finding that this group is a large, untapped pool of customers who tend to be more brand loyal than most. Consequently, the two groups are often, but not always, segmented and targeted differently.
But if you have children or adopt them, your demand might be very high because children frequently get sick. Perhaps they do so because some studies show that the market segment with greatest financial potential is married couples without children.Brian J. In California, the health care provider Kaiser Permanente runs television ads letting members of this segment know that they can request Spanish-speaking physicians and that Spanish-speaking nurses, telephone operators, and translators are available at all of its clinics.Eric N. Nearly 70 percent of Hispanics in the United States trace their lineage to Mexico; others trace theirs to Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
For instance, if your business is a high-end restaurant, should it be located near the local college or country club? When the coupons are redeemed, the store can then find out where its customers are locateda€”or not located. The organization then created significantly different marketing campaigns to appeal to each group.
Psychographic information is frequently gathered via extensive surveys that ask people about their activities, interests, opinion, attitudes, values, and lifestyles. They tend to be well educated and actively seek out information in the decision-making process. Achievers live conventional lives, are politically conservative, and respect authority and the status quo.
They are comfortable with the familiar and are primarily concerned with safety and security.
We should try to get up early in the morning as someone rightly said that those who go to bed early and rise early in the morning remain healthy, wealthy and wise. We seek input from and collaborate with consumers, industry, government entities, and other external stakeholders. The Dodd-Frank Act increased accountability in government by consolidating consumer financial protection authorities that had existed across seven different federal agencies into one, the newly formed Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. There is growing evidence of the significant impact that the therapist’s own expectations have on efficacy of interventions and this is particularly so in addictions. With particular expertise in change management and leadership, Damian has a strong track record in the implementation and turnaround of large, recovery orientated, integrated substance misuse services and treatment systems. Innovators are very active consumers, and their purchases reflect cultivated tastes for upscale, niche products and services. They are well informed about world and national events and are alert to opportunities to broaden their knowledge.
They value consensus, predictability, and stability over risk, intimacy, and self-discovery.
Their energy finds an outlet in exercise, sports, outdoor recreation, and social activities. They follow established routines, organized in large part around home, family, community, and social or religious organizations to which they belong.
They favor stylish products that emulate the purchases of people with greater material wealth.
