September 19, 2013 by Rachel Every parent wants to buy fun toys that promote the development of their child. Many psychologists agree that young children’s brain development is influenced when they begin to interact with and manipulate the world around them.
According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, jigsaw puzzles are so beneficial to the brain that they can even prevent dementia in later life. Goal setting is another important concept for children to learn and it is particularly useful for kids of a pre-school age who don’t have much experience yet in this area.

Using your brain to solve creative challenges is excellent practice and will help slow down the effects of aging. A randomized controlled double-blind study published in August 2006 “demonstrates that intensive, plasticity-engaging training can result in an enhancement of cognitive function in normal mature adults.” Challenging cognitive function leads to learning and neurogenesis. Do activities you enjoy, but be sure to do things that challenge you with new and different types of stimulation.

Check out the Whitehead Lectures on Cognition, Computation, & Creativity or this PET study of creativity. As seen in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and more, SharpBrains is an independent market research firm tracking applied brain science. Each layer word contains all the letters of the word above it, plus a new letter to form a new word below. When it comes to simple and affordable educational toys, few are better than jigsaw puzzles. It is known that fine motor skills in children are developed by playing with the said toys, but nowadays it is better understood how such games and puzzles help to develop memory function and shape recognition. Yes, we take vision for granted; that is why optical illusions are important, because they reveal the magic and the limits of our visual perception. The limitation with your current brain workout program is that it does not have enough variety or novelty to work out all your mental muscles. Using computer software to give you a baseline score, workout routines for your brain, and follow up tests gives you a measure of your improvement. So keep doing crosswords and sudoku, especially if you enjoy them, but don’t neglect the rest of your brain!
Memory enhancement in healthy older adults using a brain plasticity-based training program: a randomized, controlled study.
The great thing about the image that is used for the jigsaw is that it can be of just about anything. Not only can the image be created, but it can also be reshaped and molded, sometimes in ‘right’ ways and sometimes in ‘wrong’ ways.
It is perhaps in this area that other sorts of toys simply don’t provide the same sorts of benefits to a developing child. This helps children to understand that there can be a longer term goal, sometimes split over several distinct play sessions. Have you ever seen the guys in the gym with the buff upper bodies supported by little chicken legs?

So basically, right now you may be doing a highly focused workout using language and memory but with inconsistent challenge and limited feedback. There are several activities mentioned but none such as the development of a 3-D design of a building within a landscape, or the composition of a song, or some other brain storming ideation activity. For very young children, picking up the pieces of a jigsaw and turning them around to the correct orientation can be enough to promote the mental development that is desired.
By organizing the jigsaw into sections, perhaps by the shapes of the pieces or by their color, it is possible to solve the puzzle with a variety of methods. A structured program should give you assessment, novelty, and performance-based challenge while still being fun. And activities that use many different cognitive abilities (motor coordination, visualization, spatial rotation, computation, etc.) use more of your brain.
Once the child is engaged with the idea, because of their liking for the image used, so they will become engaged with the puzzle itself.
For toddlers and older kids, they will learn to work more directly with the jigsaw, applying the logic that they have learned from the experience of earlier puzzles.
This can help children to get hold of the concept that the larger goal may be made up of a number of smaller ones that lead in the same direction. Just as you cross-train in your physical fitness routine (mixing cardio with strength training and flexibility) to get a balanced workout, you need to cross-train your mental fitness to exercise your brain through motor coordination, emotional understanding, memory, focus and attention, sensory processes, communication, language skills, and mental visualization. That mental stimulation can dramatically increase the rate of neurogenesis, or the creation of new neurons and the connections between neurons.
One of the greatest pleasures I can obtain is to develop a creative design solution to a problem.
It is almost as if I can stimulate my own endorphen flow, anytime I want, just by thinking of new ideas.
