In it Hay stated that she was born in Los Angeles to a poor mother who remarried Louise’s violent stepfather.
Louise ran away from home and ended up in New York City, where she became a model and married a prosperous businessman. Her first book, Heal Your Body, was published in 1976, long before it was fashionable to discuss the connection between the mind and body. The most destructive force you and I have – and the most constructive – is our own unconscious emotional and thinking and feeling state. To feel that we suffer for our mistakes is justice, but to feel that our mistakes are eternal is to be already in the suppositional hell of a false theology. The intellect is a cold thing and a merely intellectual idea will never stimulate thought in the same manner that a spiritual idea does. There was a time when a man was so convinced that the world was round that he was determined to prove it. Through Louise’s healing techniques and positive philosophy, millions have learned how to create more of what they want in their lives, including more wellness in their bodies, minds, and spirits. After several years, Louise compiled a reference guide detailing the mental causes of physical ailments, and developed positive thought patterns for reversing illness and creating health. Hay described how in 1977 or 1978 she found she had cervical cancer, and how she came to the conclusion that by holding on to her resentment for her childhood abuse and rape she had contributed to its onset. You Can Heal Your Life reached the New York Times bestseller list and remained on it for 13 consecutive weeks. In 1976, Hay wrote her first book Heal Your Body, which began as a small pamphlet, containing a list of different bodily ailments and their “probable” metaphysical causes. In 1980, Louise moved back to her native Southern California, and it was here that she began putting her workshop methods on paper. What began as a small venture in the living room of her home, has turned into a prosperous corporation that has sold millions of books and tapes worldwide.
Following this, You Can Heal Your Life immediately landed on the New York Times best-seller list. At 81, Louise is proud to release her first-ever film on her life and work You Can Heal Your Life: The Movie.
She has appeared on television around the world, and her monthly column, “Dear Louise,” appears in more than 50 publications in the United States, Canada, Australia, Spain, and Argentina. When she’s not traveling, Louise enjoys painting, gardening, and dancing at her home in San Diego, California. AS The QUEEN of Affirmations and positive thoughts and a pioneer in the mind-body field, LOUISE HAY has challenged her worldwide readers and audiences to expand their thinking for more than 35 years. In honor of Louise’s 85th Birthday this month, we invite you to celebrate the Exceptional Life of Louise Hay and honor the loving and amazing woman who helped so many of us to heal our lives.
She has helped millions around the world in her tireless efforts to communicate, speak, write, and share any and all knowledge that she has been graced. I’ve been going through an extremely tumultuous time at work and in my personal life.

One of the founders of the self help movement, Louise Hay is an American author who writes motivational books promoting self help through the concept of New Thought. Desperate to gather herself, Louise started attending meetings at the Church of Religious Science and studied many books and materials on the New Thought philosophy. Her research, study and practice led Hay to produce a reference guideline which explained the mental and psychological causes of physical illnesses. Extending her social work activities, Louise Hay began assisting HIV infected people by leading support groups and creating AIDS awareness.
Hay made advantage of her studies and beliefs when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in the late 1970s.
A renowned leader of the self-help movement from its early days, Louise Hay is celebrated worldwide for teaching—by personal example and through her bestselling book, You Can Heal Your Life—how each of us can transform our mind, body and spirit by changing the way we think.
Nourishing mind and body, loving life, learning and growing, giving back and moving ahead—these comprise Hay’s program for creating health, happiness and longevity. What are some key elements to crafting a life experience that supports and nourishes ageless being? A third of our life is spent eating, and it’s essential that we know the best way to do this.
The core belief founding your lifework is that every thought we have is creating our future. When I began teaching people about affirmations there wasn’t any science to support it, but we knew it worked, and now studies verify that. I hear reports every day of how people are healing their lives by changing their thoughts by cultivating self-love and personal affirmations.
She explained, that at this point she changed her name and began a career as a fashion model. Although it appeared that her life had turned around, it was not until the marriage ended 14 years later, that her healing really began. Revised and expanded in 1988, this best-selling book introduced Louise’s concepts to people in 33 different countries and has been translated into 25 languages throughout the world. In this role she led people in spoken affirmations, which she believes will cure their illnesses, and became popular as a workshop leader.
Hay revealed that here she studied the New Thought works of authors like Florence Scovel Shinn, who claimed that positive thinking could change people’s material circumstances, and the Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes, who taught that the body could be healed through positive thinking.
She attended meetings at the Church of Religious Science and began training in the ministerial program. She reported how she had refused conventional medical treatment, and began a regime of forgiveness, coupled with therapy, nutrition, reflexology and occasional enemas. She considered the alternatives to surgery and drugs, and instead developed an intensive program of affirmations, visualization, nutritional cleansing, and psychotherapy. This pamphlet was later enlarged and extended into her book You Can Heal Your Life, published in 1984.
In it, Louise explains how our beliefs and ideas about ourselves are often the cause of our emotional problems and physical maladies and how, by using certain tools, we can change our thinking and our lives for the better. Hay House authors include many notables in the self-help movement, including Wayne Dyer, Joan Borysenko, and Doreen Virtue, among others. Hay Charitable Fund are two non-profit organizations established by Louise that support many diverse organizations, including those dealing with AIDS, battered women, and other challenged individuals in our society.
More than 35 million copies are now in print around the world in over 30 languages and it also has been made into a movie. I had the opportunity to speak with Louise on the first day of the Raw Lifestyle Film Festival 2008.
Whether you first discovered Louise’s wisdom in one of her uplifting talks, her many wonderful books or card decks, her soothing audios, her memorable Hay Ride, her heartfelt Dear Louise letters, her powerful affirmations, or her inspiring little blue book, her beautiful and life-changing message still resonates today—What we choose to think and believe and say now is creating our experiences of tomorrow. In her new book You Can Create an Exceptional Life(which she co-wrote with Cheryl Richardson), Louise continues to shape our lives by reminding us how to practice the art of self-care and train our minds to think thoughts that make us feel good. Her Legacy to our world is the honesty and open mind that she has authentically lived throughout her life of constant sharing with everyone that comes across her path.
To view the world through eyes of love, instead of focusing on the negative, betrayal, and hurt. With her second marriage, Hay’s mother entered into a violent relationship which left a lasting influence of negativity on Louise.
She underwent training in the ministerial program and became a popular speaker and workshop leader at the church moving on to counseling clients which eventually became her full-time profession.

She explained how one can get rid of physical ailments by simply inducing a positive thought process and a love yourself motto in their mind, something she also stressed upon in her lectures and workshops she organized throughout the United States.
Not willing to undergo conventional treatment or medication for her sickness, Hay treated herself by following a regime of forgiveness, coupled with therapy, nutrition, reflexology and occasional enemas. At age 88, she continues to travel for business and pleasure, embracing vital, joy-filled days with a thankful smile. Filter out from your consciousness any messages that say you are not good enough or that separate you from the beautiful and lovable person you are. I particularly love Bruce Lipton’s scientific research showing that we are not controlled by our genes, because the genetic blueprint can be altered through positive changes in our beliefs.
They are seeing healing of autoimmune diseases, obesity, addictions, post-traumatic stress and many other so-called incurable illnesses. Hay recounted her life story in an interview with Mark Oppenheimer of the New York Times in May 2008. At 15 she dropped out of high school without a diploma, became pregnant and, on her 16th birthday, gave up her newborn baby girl to be adopted. She also recalled how she had studied Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at the Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa. She claimed in the interview that she rid herself of the cancer by this method, but declared that there is no doctor left alive who can confirm this story, while swearing to its truth.
As of February 2008, it was second on the New York Times miscellaneous paperback best sellers list. These grew from a few people in her living room to hundreds of men in a large hall in West Hollywood. You Can Heal Your Life is also included in the book 50 Self-Help Classics for being significant in its field. Fifty (50) winners will receive a copy of Louise Hay and Cheryl Richardson’s new book, You Can Create an Exceptional Life. Side by side Hay also devoted her time to studying Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at the Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa. Her work attracted attention and she was soon invited on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Donahue which led her book (You Can Heal Your Life) to make a place in The New York Times bestsellers list.
Louise Hay’s latest book, You Can Create an Exceptional Life was released in September 2011. Her new book, Loving Yourself to Great Health, co-authored with Ahlea Khadro and Heather Dane, explains how she’s taking all she knows to the next level. Loving affirmations and worrying about things take up the same amount of time; you still get the same things done along the way, but worrying creates stress, while affirmations will brighten your life. I trust that life will bring me exactly what I need, and part of that is realizing that I don’t need to know everything, because life brings me people like Ahlea and Heather. If you are thinking positive thoughts, but feeding yourself processed, unnatural or sugary foods, you are sending yourself mixed messages. In 1954 she married the English businessman Andrew Hay, but went on to tell how, after 14 years of marriage, she was devastated when he left her for another woman.
Her work with AIDS patients drew fame and she was invited to appear on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “Donahue” in the same week, in March 1988. Since then the books has been translated into 30 languages and printed in over 35 million copies. Louise Hays writes on page 225 of her book (December 2000 printing) that the book has “. If you make kindness to yourself and others a simple part of everyday life, it isn’t exhausting at all. Given this disparity, it is more likely that the 35 million copies named in the subsequent 2007 and 2008 newspaper interviews should be 3.5 million.
