I have over 12 years of experience working with small business and several successful startups. A good leader encourages followers to tell him what he needs to know, not what he wants to hear.
A trustworthy leader goes the extra mile to remedy strained relationships, even when it doesn't appear to be required.
I am convinced more than ever that good communication and leadership are all about connecting.
Every time you make a mistake, don't bring up everything that's wrong with yourself; tell yourself that you're paying the price for growth and that you will learn to do better next time.
We were created for meaningful work, and one of life's greatest pleasures is the satisfaction of a job well done. Leaders who practice the Law of Victory believe that anything less than success is unacceptable. SELF-DISCIPLINE, more than any other personal quality I can think of, is the one thing that separates successful people from the unsuccessful. COMMITMENT is the first step to every good thing I know, and the only step that matters when it comes to achievement. You have to live with the people to know their needs, and you have to live with God to know how to solve them.
To collaborative team members, completing one another is more important than competing with one another. To Stay Focused in Life: You can't know everyone You can't do everything You can't go everywhere We have to pick and choose between good and a little bit better. We feel unhappy and confused with our life when we don't do the focus or calling that God has on our life. If you start today to do the right thing, you are already a success even if it doesn't show yet.
The leader continually passes on the vision to those who come around, knowing that dreams, if presented right, are contagious. Whenever I mentor people and help them discover their purpose, I always encourage them to start the process by discovering their strengths, not exploring their shortcomings.
I've known people who thought that reaching their potential would come from shoring up their weaknesses.
Most People have a desire to look for the exception instead of the desire to become exceptional. To move forward today, you must learn to say good-bye to yesterday's hurts, tragedies and baggage.
Good attitudes among players do not guarantee a team's success, but bad attitudes guarantee it's failure.
There is a world of difference between a person who has a big problem and a person who makes a problem big.
Great leaders understand that the right attitude will set the right atmosphere, which enables the right response from others. Once our minds are 'tattooed' with negative thinking, our chances for long-term success diminish. I may not be able to change the world I see around me, but I can change the way I see the world within me. If you believe in others and give them a positive reputation to uphold, you can help them to become better than they think they are.
Remember, in the end, it isn't what you are that holds you back, it's what you think you are not.
Making matters worse is people's natural inclination to be easy on themselves, judging themselves according to their good intentions-while holding others to a higher standard and judging them by their worst actions. The key choices you make-apart from the natural talent you already have-will set you apart from others who have talent alone. We cannot choose how many years we will live, but we can choose how much life those years will have. To achieve your dreams, you must embrace adversity and make failure a regular part of your life. Failing forward is the ability to get back up after you've been knocked down, learn from your mistake, and move forward in a better direction. Make a point to continually search for a better way of doing things, even when things are going well, to ensure that a better alternative has not been overlooked and to keep your creative talents in practice.
Creative leaders inherently know when rules need to be challenged, and they can see when a more flexible approach should be taken.
Although it's admirable to be ambitious and hard-working, it's more desirable to be smart-working. Often people fail to start or complete a task because they don't see any connection between what they're doing and what they really want to accomplish in life. Leaders don't rise to the pinnacle of success without developing the right set of attitudes and habits; they make every day a masterpiece. Reaching the top is a monumental achievement, but remaining there may be the most spectacular feat of all. You build trust with others each time you choose integrity over image, truth over convenience, or honor over personal gain.
It's true that charisma can make a person stand out for a moment, but character sets a person apart for a lifetime. Every new level of growth we hope to experience as leaders calls for a new level of change. Most people use two totally different sets of criteria for judging themselves versus others.

People change when they hurt enough that they have to change, learn enough that they want to change, receive enough that they are able to change. Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others. By choosing to embrace and practice good values every day, you choose the higher course in life.
The secret of successful people lies in their ability to discover their strengths and to organize their life so that these strengths can be applied. Find something you like to do so much that you would gladly do it for nothing; then learn to do it so well that people are happy to pay you for it. The great leaders in history were great not because of what they owned or earned but because of what they gave their lives to accomplish.
Connecting is the ability to identify with people and relate to them in a way that increases your influence with them. As negative thoughts produce negative actions, so positive thoughts produce positive actions. Show me a person who sees himself negatively and I will show you a person who sees others in a negative way. Since an attitude is often expressed by our body language and by the looks on our faces, it can be contagious.
Leaders create and inspire new leaders by instilling faith in their leadership abilities and helping them develop and hone leadership skills they don't know they possess.
A leader's ability to convey confidence and his ability to communicate effectively are similar. If your desire is to be successful or to make a positive impact on your world, you need to become a person of influence. You can be a model to the masses, but to go to the higher levels of influence, you have to work with individuals. Even if you've had a negative effect on others in the past, you can turn that around and make your impact a positive one. People today are desperate for leaders, but they want to be influenced only by individuals they can trust, persons of good character.
The length and breath of our influence on others are directly related to the depth of our concern for them.
When you nurture people and add value to them without expecting anything in return, they feel significant. Faith in people is an essential quality of an influencer when working with others, yet it is a scarce commodity today. To help people believe they can achieve victory, put them in a position to experience small successes.
Becoming a good listener, you are able to connect with others on more levels and develop stronger, deeper relationships. You'll never know how close you are to a million-dollar idea unless you're willing to listen. If you want to become a better listener, however you need to learn to direct that energy and attention positively by concentrating on the person you're with. If you show people how much you care and ask questions in a non threatening way, you'll be amazed by how much they'll tell you. If you can learn to understand people how they think, what they feel, what inspires them, how they're likely to act and react in a given situation- then you can motivate and influence them in a positive way. The more people see that they are being understood, they become more motivated to understand your point of view. One way to overcome our natural self-centeredness is to try to see things from other people's perspectives. Changing your attitude from self-centerdness to understanding requires desire and commitment to always try to see things from the other persons point of view. If you want to help others and become a person of influence, keep smiling, sharing, giving, and turning the other cheek.
They biggest man with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest man with the smallest mind-think big anyway. Everyone you know and all the people you meet have the potential to be someone important in the lives of others.
Every sailor knows that you can't sail a ship that isn't moving forward, strong leaders understand that to change direction, you first have to create forward progress.
When you face discouragement, you can do one of two things, and the one you choose will color your perspective. If you want to be positive, upbeat, and passionate, you need to take responsibility for being that way. Might you be missing opportunities because you have been too quick to ask how instead of why? If you keep your mind active, regularly take on mental challenges, and continually think about the right things, you will develop the disciplined thinking that will help you with whatever you endeavor to do. The bottomline in leadership isn't how far we advance ourselves but how far we advance others. At the end of every year, I take time out to reflect and evaluate the events of the previous year - what went well and what needed improvement.
If you can connect with others at every level -one-on-one, in groups, and with an audience-your relationships are stronger, your sense of community improves, your ability to create teamwork increases, your influence increases, and your productivity skyrockets.
If you want to build the kind of credibility that connects with people, then deliver results before you deliver a message.
It inspires and attracts people, shows them you have conviction and goals, that you are focused and determined.

Many people are taught this in kindergarten when they are instructed to stay within the lines while coloring. But do you know what happens when you spend all your time working on your weaknesses and never developing your strengths?
No matter where you may be starting from, don't be discouraged; everyone who got where he is started where he was.
There is almost no limit to the potential of an organization that recruits good people, raises them up as leaders and continually develops them. Man is the only known creature who can reshape and remould himself by altering his attitude. The question is always whether you are willing to pay the price to attain it - in hard work, sacrifice, patience, faith, and endurance. Whenever possible, find the 1 percent you do agree on in a difficult situation, and give it 100 percent of your effort. If they don't know their team's strengths and weaknesses, they cannot hand off responsibilities to the team. We struggle daily with situations that demand decisions between what we want to do and what we ought to do.
It is a result of self-discipline, inner trust, and a decision to be relentlessly honest in all situations in our lives.
Even though they are all the same size, some people are able to pack more into them then others. They must find the best people they can, giving them the opportunity to join in the journey developing them, and encouraging them to reach their potential. And is the foundation upon which many other qualities for success are built, such as respect, dignity, and trust. You can look at others to place the blame, or you can look at yourself to discover your opportunities.
You can't make your vision come to life unless you outline each goal-driven step at a time. From that inventory, I lay out my next year - how I intend to live, make the best use of time and maximize adding value to others. To reach your potential, you must continually improve yourself, and you can't do that if you don't take responsibility for your actions and learn from your mistakes.
They believe that if the cause is good enough, people will automatically buy in and follow.
And if they don't know their own strengths and weaknesses, they will not hand off responsibilities to the team.
You may not always get what you desire, but you will always be the person you desire to be. As a leader, your job is to help your ducks to become better ducks and your eagles better eagles - to put individuals in the right places and help them reach their potential. Successful leaders recognize their errors, learn from them, and work to correct their faults. And you can't reach your full potential unless you plan how to make the most of your purpose and passion. Success asks, 'How can I add value to myself?' Significance asks, 'How can I add value to others?' It is your intention that lends itself to significance. But a legacy is created only when a person puts his organization into the position to do great things without him.
The alternative is a life ruled by emotions, and none of us can afford that if we're going to fulfill our purpose and realize our potential. Any time you make choices based on solid life values, you are in a better position to sustain your level of commitment, because you don't have to continually re-evaluate its importance. They realized that they couldn't determine every circumstance in life but they could determine their choice of attitude towards every circumstance. We cannot control the negative atmosphere of the world, but we can control the atmosphere of our minds.
The process of achievement comes through repeated failures and the constant struggle to climb to a higher level. When you look around and see people who are the captains of their ship, invariably they have taken pains to chart their successful course through life. People don't follow worthy causes; they follow worthy leaders with a cause they can believe in. Even if we do the wrong thing, if we believe our motives were good, we let ourselves off the hook. Integrity welds what we say, think, and do, into a whole person so that permission is never granted for one of these to be out of sync.
The higher you go, the greater the number of people who will be willing to travel with you. And they recognize that the best thing about adversity is coming out on the other side of it. There is a sweetness to overcoming your troubles and finding something good in the process, however small it may be.
