Kids love money as well as a adults and these creative ideas are sure to make them appreciate the gift even more! Finding alternative uses for old shoes instead of throwing them into the trash is something that doesn't automatically comes to mind. Nike runs a program called Reuse A Shoe where they take athletic shoes of any brand and grind down the material in the shoes to use to make surfaces for tennis courts, turf fields, tracks, etc. These are for shoes that are so worn they can no longer be used in other ways such as they are full of holes, the soles are worn all the way through or the shoes are so trashed they can no longer be worn. A pair of old shoes can be a perfect place to hide money in your house as it isn't a place that a burglar would typically look for cash. If you have an old pair of heels where the heel is the only salvageable part of the shoe, you might be surprised that they could make the perfect all hanger. If you are looking for a unique addition to your yard, you can upcycle old shoes soles into stepping stones (tutorial).
While it is usually quite easy to donate, sell or give away baby shoes since they usually are outgrown long before they show any real wear, an alternative is to use them as a unique growth chart (tutorial).
Some shoes may no longer be acceptable for what they were originally purchased for, but still can be used for other things. For the ladies out there, an pair of nice heals that no longer can be worn may make the perfect ring holder (tutorial). Andrea can always be found with a new craft in front of her, a form of technology on her right and a coffee on her left. I'm mom to Miss O, a very opinionated 4 year old and Little J, the ever climbing 2 year old. Subscribe to the free Money Saving Mom® email newsletter and get the Guide to Freezer Cooking for free!
