Kaplan and Kaiser culled from years spent working with executives to provide examples of leaders for whom the strengths that helped push them up the ladder have ultimately undercut their effectiveness once in the boss’s seat. For instance, one such go-getter—a division president at a large healthcare technology company—is apparently “so adept at wielding his intellectual firepower and charisma that he shuts down people around him,” according to a colleague.
The authors conducted “thousands of assessments” of senior executives, in an effort to determine when these leaders’ greatest strengths could betray them. Many executives are “lopsided,” the authors say, and favor certain qualities at the expense of others, without even realizing it. The notion that many leaders have a tendency to overplay their strengths is often overlooked in leadership development, according to the authors, who provide a few tips for tempering executives’ excesses. For instance, they say, asking a leader’s colleagues whether the leader displays too much, too little or just the right amount of a certain characteristic can be instructive, and help a manager or executive find the right balance of the aforementioned qualities.

Most of us in the sports performance business assume that we’re making a huge difference in the sports world, but this video kind of took the wind out of my sails. In the new book, authors Robert Kaplan and Robert Kaiser “address a glaring oversight in the field of executive development—namely the lack of attention paid to the danger of leaders taking their strengths too far,” according to a press release issued by Kaplan DeVries Inc.
As a result, he explains, “people then seek to be in agreement with him rather than bringing their best thinking,” effectively disengaging team members and hampering their ability to contribute.


Kaplan and Kaiser identified a set of what they describe as fundamental leadership qualities—strategic leadership, operational leadership, forceful leadership and enabling leadership—that can be detrimental when overemphasized. The research shows that often the most successful people are those that simply tried many different approaches until they found one that worked. Instead of talking and thinking about what they could achieve “wouldn’t it be great if…” they more often than not did something about it. If you’re so focused on achieving a certain outcome then you will often miss out on other opportunities, that in the long run could have provided you with more success…they simply pass you by because you are so fixated on one specific outcome or way of doing things. As human beings we naturally want to feel like we are in control at all times and ‘open minded action’ essentially means taking control initially by initiating action, but letting go of only one specific result and remaining open to alternative outcomes. Leadership is essentially nothing more than swift & responsible decision-making that in turn creates consistent action.
I wasn’t always sure they were right at the time, but it allowed us to move on and accomplish that day, rather than wait. As for my own experiences, it’s the fear that hold me back for many years and when I finally took action I quit when it got difficult because I had to begin with limiting beliefs system. A positive attitude is so crucial – this keeps us motivated so that taking action is easier. Does he have a track record of making poor decisions and worry about making another bad choice?
For me it’s about setting goals (because they are required to create action) but being flexible enough to change those goals mid-course and being aware of other potential outcomes.
