Earlier this month, Canada’s Minister of Justice Jody Wilson-Raybould introduced legislation for physician-assisted death in Canada. Author and journalist Sandra Martin responded to the legislation with an opinion piece in the Globe and Mail, saying, “Bill C-14, which was tabled in the House of Commons on Thursday, has far too little heart and far too much head. More than a year ago, the Supreme Court of Canada legalized physician-assisted death and gave the government a year to implement legislation. British Columbia has a starring role in A Good Death, with the Sue Rodriguez case front and centre of the country’s backstory on death with dignity.

That means people with dementia, people in pain but who are not terminal, and people under 18 are left out of the legislation, at least for now. Martin has literally written a book on the subject, a book that is the result of hundreds of interviews with people close to the issue. A handful of Canadians have already pursued physician-assisted death in the interim, but they have had to present their cases before the courts to go ahead.
In 1993, the Supreme Court of Canada, in a 5-4 decision, rejected a plea from Rodriguez, who had ALS, a paralyzing degenerative disease, for assistance in ending her life. She also looks at the euthanasia practised in places in Europe such as the Netherlands and Switzerland and the physician-assisted dying model developed in Oregon.
