NEW YORK, NY (March 16, 2009) a€“ Over 10.2 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2008, according to statistics released today by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Racial and Ethnic DistributionRacial and ethnic minorities accounted for 20 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2008.
About the ASAPS Cosmetic Surgery National Data BankASAPS, working with an independent research firm, compiled the 12-year national data for procedures performed 1997-2008. Surveys have shown that cosmetic surgeries have risen in Asian countries such as Korea, China and Japan, see Asian cosmetic surgery statistics above. With this high demand, cosmetic surgeons all over the world have improved their techniques and approaches in order to cater to the steadily increasing demand of Asian cosmetic surgeries. What makes these procedures different from the regular cosmetic surgeries done on European or Western patients is that the surgeon makes sure that he fashions the features in a way that would be appropriate to the Asian face. The results draw a lot of clients in because they saw that they can have an improved appearance without really having it looking too severe. For instance an Asian rhinoplasty can result to a nose that has the appropriate amount of length, width and projection which fits the physical structure of the Asian face. Another factor that could also be attributed to the boom of Asian cosmetic surgeries is the people’s obsession over beauty.
This eyebrow raising story started when the wife gave birth to their first baby, which looked like neither of the two of them. Although this story might be treading along the bizarre, this is a classic example of how much a lot of Asians would go to change the way they look.  Some do not seek cosmetic surgery to have a nose or an eye corrected, but also to achieve the total overhaul. It is also a growing trend in Asia to have patients of all ages coming in to get cosmetic surgeries in an effort to make themselves look more Westernized. A CNN report introduced Lee Min Kyong, a 12-year-old who was scheduled by her mother to have an eyelid surgery done to make her look more westernized. The high demands of these procedures that change their defining ethic characteristic were seen by some as these patients’ way of saying that they find their ethnicity as negative features.
Asian cosmetic surgery has dramatically risen over the years, with the highest numbers in China.
For instance in the heavily populated republic of China, especially with equally impressive credentials and the highly competitive job market, employers would tend to go for those who look younger.
Asians who want to change the way look is no different than those patients from other races who also want to change some physical features.
If this makes a person feel better and if they deem it necessary to improve their chances of employment, there is nothing wrong with it. The craze and boom of Asian cosmetic surgeries is indeed largely due to the highly influential western culture.
Concerns however should be raised when these individuals submit themselves to second rate procedures.

Americans spent more than 13.5 billion on combined surgical and nonsurgical procedures in 2015. The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) sent out a survey to more than 14,000 doctors and used the results to project national averages for 23,000 medical specialists. From 2002-2003, there was a 20 percent increase in the total number of cosmetic procedures.
Since 1997, there has been a 293 percent increase in the total number of cosmetic procedures. The top five surgical procedures for women were: liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, breast reduction and rhinoplasty. Men had nearly 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, 13 percent of the total (up from 12 percent of the total in 2002). The top five surgical procedures for men were: liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, breast reduction to treat enlarged male breasts, and hair transplantation. The most common procedures for age 18-and-under were: chemical peel, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, rhinoplasty, and otoplasty (ear reshaping). Figures may not add exactly to totals and percentages may not equal 100 percent due to rounding. New York, NY (February 18, 2004) - The number of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in the United States increased by 20 percent in 2003 to a total of nearly 8.3 million, according to statistics released today by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

Botox injections continued to rank first among all cosmetic procedures (surgical and nonsurgical combined), increasing 37 percent from 2002.
Americans age 35-50 had 3.7 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, representing 45 percent of all procedures performed in 2003. The 19-34 age group had nearly 2 million cosmetic procedures, and 24 percent of all procedures. The 18-and-under age group had less than 3 percent of all cosmetic procedures (223,594), down slightly from 2002.
Racial and ethnic minorities accounted for 20 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2003, an increase of 1 percent from 2002. Fifty-two percent (52 percent) of cosmetic procedures in 2003 were performed in office-based facilities, an increase of 7 percent from 2002. The ASAPS survey includes data from member surgeons as well as nonmember physicians and surgeons in multiple specialties.
From being among those who have long taken the backseat when it comes to elective surgical procedures to being the hub and provider of quality medical aesthetic outcomes, Asia has indeed come full circle in this arena.
And what are the factors that elevated Asia into one of the most top ranking regions when it comes to shelling out money for cosmetic procedures?
With over thousands of cosmetic procedures performed daily in surgical clinics, surgeons see that there is a booming market in Asia. And in order to cater to their cosmetic requests without really changing their Asian features, procedures like Asian rhinoplasty and Asian double eyelid surgery are introduced. A natural-looking result is achievable which means they can easily conceal the fact that they had something done.
According to a case in China, a man divorced and sued his wife for being ugly with him winning $120,000 on the case. The husband said that the baby was “incredibly ugly” which led him to suspect that his wife must have cheated on him. Asian movies such as Time and 200 Pounds Beauty show how popular and in demand these Asian cosmetic surgeries are due to the obsession to spotless beauty. Lee also adds that aside from Asian eyelid surgery, patients also seek rhinoplasty or nose reshaping to elevate the nose and facial contouring procedures to slim their characteristic round Asian face. Charles Lee, a cosmetic surgeon in Los Angeles who specializes on blepharoplasty, said, “There is more resistance to the procedure here than in Asia.”  He also said that in his practice has seen a lot of ethnicities who want to have that Caucasian standard of beauty. For Asians who find that a rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty would make them look better whether to look more westernized or not, then that is their prerogative.
People can point fingers by saying that this is vanity, but everyone is entitled to their own decisions over their own body. Although it is sad that a lot of men and women are finding their own ethnic features unsatisfying, but it is still their choice regarding whatever changes they want done. Not only will this dramatically change their appearance, severely deviating from what they really look like, but it can also be risky for them as well. The most frequently performed nonsurgical procedure was injections of Botulinum Toxin Type A (including Botox and Dysport) and the most popular surgical procedure was breast augmentation. The number of procedures (surgical and nonsurgical) performed on women was more than 9 million, a decrease of 3.4 percent from the previous year. Surgical procedures increased by 12 percent, and nonsurgical procedures increased by 22 percent. Surgical procedures increased by 87 percent, and nonsurgical procedures increased by 471 percent. The number of surgical procedures increased 12 percent and the number of nonsurgical procedures increased 22 percent from 2002. Breast reduction may be covered by insurance, depending on terms of the policy and individual patient factors. There were also large percentage increases for buttock lift (increased by 70 percent to 3,565 procedures) and buttock augmentation (increased by 533 percent to 3,885 procedures). The number of procedures performed on women was nearly 7.2 million, an increase of 16 percent from 2002.
The number of procedures performed on men was nearly 1.1 million, an increase of 31 percent from 2002. Liposuction was the most popular surgical procedure (179,650 and 47 percent of liposuction total).

The most popular surgical procedure in this age group was breast augmentation (150,208 and 54 percent of the breast augmentation total).
The number one surgical procedure was eyelid surgery (104,835 and 39 percent of the eyelid surgery total). The most popular surgical procedure was eyelid surgery (33,990, and 13 percent of eyelid surgery total).
The most popular surgical procedure was rhinoplasty (23,013 and 13 percent of rhinoplasty total).
Other procedures were divided about equally between hospitals (25 percent) and free-standing surgicenters (23 percent). ASAPS members are plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who specialize in cosmetic surgery of the face and body. More than 14,000 questionnaires were mailed nationwide to a random sampling of physicians most likely to perform several or more of the 38 top cosmetic procedures. Today Asian countries are among those that are widely known to offer services not only to their locals, but foreigners as well.
He demanded to know who baby’s father was and this pushed his wife to admit that she had intensive cosmetic surgery done before they were dating. She’s my only daughter.” Her daughter also agreed by saying that the surgery would allow her to look better than how she previously looks. He owns one of the biggest cosmetic surgery centers in South Korea that is approximately 12 stories tall with its operating rooms full daily.
His patients wanted these procedures done because they want to emulate a westernized appearance. Since 1997, surgical procedures increased 67 percent, while nonsurgical procedures have increased 225 percent. Surgical procedures represented 22 percent of the total, and nonsurgical procedures were 78 percent of the total.
ASAPS, a national not-for-profit organization for education and research in cosmetic plastic surgery, annually conducts the nation's most authoritative survey of U.S. Large percentage changes are common in cases where the total number of procedures is small. Human-derived collagen products (CosmoDerm, CosmoPlast) were used in 29 percent of collagen injection procedures. Botox injection was the number one nonsurgical procedure (1,238,891 and 55 percent of Botox total).
Laser hair removal was the most popular nonsurgical procedure (332,166 and 36 percent of laser hair removal total). The most popular nonsurgical procedure was Botox injection (601,417 and 27 percent of Botox total).
The number one nonsurgical procedure was Botox injection (104,820 and 5 percent of Botox total). The most popular nonsurgical procedure was chemical peel (51,997 and 7 percent of chemical peel total).
Results of the survey were used to project national data on the number of cosmetic procedures performed in 2003 by nearly 23,000 physicians.
The disgruntled husband sued his wife of fraud because according to him she got him to marry her under false pretenses.
Some Asian-American women are saying no to such facial tweaking by saying that this is an offensive alteration of ethnic identity. Lee said that these surgical procedures to westernize the face serve as an investment to many. There were 116,211 procedures using hyaluronic acid (Hylaform, Restylane) and 31,913 procedures using calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiance). He said this improves the patient’s confidence a hundred times better giving them better chances at landing jobs and even finding a mate.
