You can verify if your inline radio is sending the data using a terminal program such as Windows Hyperterm or Termite to see if your radio output is set correctly.
A: You need a second radio that accepts computer control to tune to voice calls as they occur.
The current preview versions of UniTrunker support the use of inexpensive (approximately $15) RTL-SDR dongles to receive the trunking channel data.
The steps in this guide were actually used to get UniTrunker up and running with a PSR-600 as the data stream input device.
Download the UniTrunker program to your computer and make sure you have a connection to your scanner to receive the feed from it to the computer. Clicking on the "+" sign creates the line for you to enter the type of scanner and other info needed. Set the receiver's Type to "Signal"; this will cause additional sections to appear - including Signal and Decode. Under the Signal section, fill in the settings comparable to your Unitrunker Retro configuration. The current version of UniTrunker gives a button window with receiver options (shown below) when you press the add receiver button.
To set your scanner in the analyzer mode, press the TSYS soft key (F2) on the front of the scanner. Once you have verified each line in the particular receiver's window is filled in correctly (most of this should have been auto-filled when you selected your receiver type previously), you can click on the start arrow or stop square on the toolbar to start or stop the receiver. After about 10 to 15 seconds, you will see this screen and you should start seeing activity as TGs join and leave the program. Additionally, newer versions of UniTrunker have a Band Plan Wizard button on toolbar on top of the Call History window. You can add a name to a radio ID by double clicking on the number in the source column, and this screen will appear. By tale I can make a parking on one frequency but do not want to follow the conversation ID group why? For discussion of software applications which decode digital voice formats and trunking control channels. I have installed the latest version of Sdr-nightly, installed the trunker plugin , dsd 160, and the latest unitrunker, and VB cable on a Dell 4310(2.67 processor and 4 gig ram). When I run one instance of SdrSharp , DSD is decoding and Unitrunker is displaying the apco and Motorola sites info with the help of the Radio Reference downloads. But when I open another instance of SdrSharp while tuned to a control channel, (with trumker plugin enabled) the second SDRSharp does not change frequencies. Also tried using 2 instances of SDRsharp Release(that comes with the installed trunker plugin ) but to no avail. Each time the Debug receiver is told to go to a specific channel - the DLL writes text to a file.
Your SDR# program - which has loaded a complementary plugin - scrapes that text file for the frequency information.
Get a second SDR# installation folder working with Unitrunker (I assume SDR# is the signal source with some virtual sound card magic). I really do not know where I had messed up, but after an uninstall and reinstall of SdrSharp, Unitrunker and DSD160 everything works great.
With Instructables you can share what you make with the world, and tap into an ever-growing community of creative experts.
Install Virtual Audio Cable as it is required to route the audio out from SDRSharp into DSD. A trunked radio system is simply a system of radios in which the frequencies used are dynamically managed by a central controller. Finally, in the main UniTrunker options screen, click the Enable checkbox in the Listen section.
Because this tuner will be tuned programmatically, it is essential that it is correctly calibrated.
After you have found a control channel and calibrated the tuner you will need to lock UniTrunker down to only receive that control channel.
At this point we can launch the Digital Speech Decoder executable and check the Enable box under Trunking in SDRSharp.
In this guide I will explain how to build an inexpensive SDR (software defined radio) that can be used to receive police, fire, taxi, and other digital radio transmissions. Enable discriminator audio through the EZ-Scan Digital software or via the radio front panel menu. You can download EDACS by looking up the RR DB SID (that's the ID # assigned by the database to each trunked system). Others can follow this guide but will have to make allowances for the type of scanner used which will provide the feed of the Control Channel Data Stream. This allows people to use the program without having to tap scanner discriminators or tie up expensive newer scanners to dump control channel data.

This image was taken using a PSR-600 which is using an inline feed and although it shows "PSR500" it is perfectly acceptable because, other than the case, the PSR-500 and PSR-600 are the same scanner. The UniTrunker program should now be receiving the data stream from the System Control Channel that you selected on your scanner. From here you can select the type of standard band plan, and UniTrunker will automatically update the site's band plan for you. Here's a video of what I was talking about with only a rtl-sdr with AUX-VFO and serialcontroller monitoring frequency is going very well. As calls come across the site window - you should see the voice role receiver window display the active call (near the bottom).
I will do my best to explain the steps in detail, and provide further resources to help along the way. Using the trial version will work reasonably well however since it periodically adds a voice over the stream you may or may not have some decoding errors.
Ensure Virtual Audio Cable Line 1 is set as the default recording audio device in the windows sound properties.
For example, if I want to test 856.21250a then I need to enter 856212500 into the Frequency and Center boxes in SDRSharp.
Everything would technically work without this step, but it helps UniTrunker find the control channel faster as it switches between the control and signal. Remote.dll requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Runtime, so you will need to download and install that as well. You will not receive all transmissions and there can be a delay when retuning back to the control channel. Press HOLD on the system, the control channel should be displayed along with the SysID on the radio.
It won't run on versions of Windows XP that are missing the Microsoft WinUSB DLL (even if you don't use USB). Users have been successful in using multiple dongles to function as both control channel receivers as well as voice channel receivers. A new Virtual Audio Cable device should now appear under your playback and recording devices. For an optimal setup you will want to have two SDR receivers; one dedicated to the control channel and one dedicated to the signal. Additionally, from the main UniTrunker window, you can select the receiver and click on the start or stop buttons on the toolbar here to start or stop a particular receiver. Also, if both Unitrunker plugins attempt to write to the same folder, you're stuck yet again.
I've tried different versions of Microsoft C ++ Redistributal package (2008 and 2010) but the SDRSHARPTRUNKING LOG file won't appear in the Unitrunker folder. For information on how to configure this take a look at the UniTrunker Configuration Guide under resources.
Each NOAA weather satellite broadcasts an Automatic Picture Transmission (APT) signal, which contains a live weather image of your area. Set the com port to the correct one, as well as the port attributes (115200 baud rate, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and no parity).
The RTL-SDR dongle combined with a good antenna, SDRSharp and a decoding program can be used to download and display these live images several times a day. This value will need some adjusting as you go along, but to roughly set it look at the peak signal strength of the control channel, in my previous screenshots you can see it’s around -15db. HackRFWhen people consider upgrading from the RTL-SDR, there are three mid priced software defined radios that come to most peoples minds: The Airspy, the SDRplay RSP and the HackRF.
ACARS is typically used by ground control and pilots to send short messages and is also sometimes used for telemetry.

However, this is very inefficient as the frequency may not be in use for the majority of the time.
In a trunked radio system, a small set number of frequencies are shared between a large number of talkgroups. Each radio receives a special computer controlled control channel.
This helps to make radio frequency allocations more efficient.Because a talkgroup might switch between various frequencies often, it can make listening to a conversation difficult for radio scanners. Unitrunker can be used to decode the control channel and follow a voice conversation as it hops across various frequencies. With two RTL-SDR dongles you can set up a trunking receiver station with just Unitrunker.
Unitrunker Voice Trunking Following TutorialTo set up a trunking station we will assume that you have been through the Quickstart guide and thus have a working RTL-SDR setup. You will need one dongle to receive the control channel and one dongle to receive the voice channel.
Setting up the Signal (Control Channel) ReceiverFirst determine a trunking control channel that you are interested in monitoring. Add new receiverIn the new window that pops up choose your first RTL-SDR under “RTL Device”.Enter that units PPM correction value under “Correction”.
Set the role to Signal, set the park frequency and choose the protocolsNow at the top of this window press the Play button  .If everything is tuned correctly a new Site window should soon pop up and you should audibly hear the control channel sound coming through your speakers.
In the VCO tab you should also see under the “Signal” heading the protocol dectected and it’s “Health”, which measures the quality of reception. If every thing worked correctly, then go back to the first VCO tab, and ensure that “Mute” is checked. If it is below 100 it may indicate reception problems which will need to be solved by tuning the signal correctly, adjusting the gain, or using a better antenna. The Site window shows the frequencies in use, and logs each call.
If the frequencies are not showing, click the ‘Wizard’ button  whose icon looks like a calculator. Set up the voice receiverPress the Play button .You should now be listening to trunked conversations!
In the voice receiver options, under the VCO tab adjust the “Squelch” value, until the static disappears, but voice still comes through.Monitoring Multiple Control Channels with Multiple VCOsMore recent versions of Unitrunker have the option to use multiple VCO’s. Basically this allows you to tune and monitor to multiple control channels with a single dongle, as long as they all fit within the dongles bandwidth.
This will work well as long as the voice channels are within the same bandwidth as the control channel.
A new site window should pop up.If the frequencies are not showing, click the ‘Wizard’ button  whose icon looks like a calculator. If unsure, try ‘Standard’ first as this is the most commonly used. You should now be listening to trunked conversations!Once you have the system running to improve performance we recommend disabling “Auto Gain” and instead setting the gain manally using the “Gain” entry under the “Info” tab in both the Signal and Control RTL-SDR options. However, instead of outputting audio to the speakers, audio should be output to a virtual audio pipe such as Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) or VB Cable using the Digital Output audio selection in Unitrunker. Reply December 6, 2015 - 2:37 amDesigning on a juicy cup Can this be done with just one wideband radio? Reply October 28, 2015 - 2:04 amken mulder I got it working with one dongle however vco2 shows no signals and health level is zero. I’ve got to rtl-sdr dongles and can lock the control channel but the one doing the listen role does not render audio properly, it sounds gabled.
When I run UT with RS2832U selected, and all settings correct, try to RUN, it says: no radio selected.
Reply June 27, 2015 - 5:00 pmAlvin Is there a way to use a HackRF One in one of the roles? I’m trying to get Unitrunker working and the control channel for a local EDACS96 trunked system looks more like the APCO P25 spectrum. I can hit my control channel with 100 health and I can see the voice channels coming in ok.
However the freqs for the voice channels are in the 800mhz range and not 400 where they should be. Unitrunker signal receiver detects the EDACS96 Pro Voice encoding just fine (Health 80-100).
