Congestion has always been a problem in the world’s major cities, and over the years some have come up with a novel solution of taking passenger traffic not only underground, but above it too. Also known as the Hopewell Project, the abandoned Bangkok Elevated Road and Train System was an ambitious project to establish an elevated transportation system installed between central Bangkok and the Don Mueang International Airport. The project kicked off in 1990, but was caught up in a debate between the government and Hopewell Holdings, the major contractor working on the line. It’s amazing to think that anything in New York City could stand empty for so long, especially after almost a century of use. The closure of part of the Myrtle Avenue subway line near Bridge and Jay Streets in 1969 also brought the demolition of the section of elevated railway that was once an integral part of the MJ service. Except, that is, for this lonely stretch of track.

And look at the shutdowns in May…2-5 and 16-18 there will be no service between Times Square *TO* 74th Street!!! When you can go to any rank third world hole and find a gleaming mass transit system that leaves ours in the dust, you know we’ve hit rock bottom. We’ll all be in our graves (me definitely) or New York City will be populated only by wolves and tumbleweeds before the much-vaunted CBTC is ever on line and functional.
If the workers did a little more work and a little less sitting around, the maintenance wouldn’t take so long. What I don’t understand is that the businesses say it hurts them when the train shuts down, but what percentage of the patrons of your businesses live outside the neighborhood?

Like their terrestrial counterparts, many of these elevated railroads and stations have outlived their useful life. Rumours of corruption and the 1997 financial crisis exacerbated the problems, as talks spiraled out of control.
Over the years several pillars have collapsed, and in 2013 official demolition finally began. The 5-mile-long line opened on February 4, 1893, was extended in 1896 with the construction of the subterranean Dingle station.
With only three lower tracks and two island platforms left in use on below, its closure effectively halved the size of the station. Gradually, the idea solidified and saw the old el train line transformed into a park inspired by the Promenade Plantee in Paris. That was, namely, transportation, and the Siemensbahn was built in Berlin as an elevated railway to clear congestion and get workers safely to and from the Siemens company headquarters. Originally opened in 1907, Racine hasn’t been renovated and updated little over the years. None of that happened, though, and when the line came back online in 1996, the CTA stated that Racine would be among those that remained mothballed. Built in 1893 solely to serve the hundreds of thousands of visitors to the World’s Columbian Exposition in nearby Jackson Park, it was ultimately demolished in 2012. But wear and tear to the platform made it unsafe, though, and the abandoned L train station was demolished in 2012.
Its foundations were first laid in 1851, and since then it’s been expanded and updated to carry hundreds of thousands of passengers every day. It was originally steam locomotives that chugged their way up and down the railways, only to be replaced and updated when the track was electrified in 1929.

Unlike the later ornate elevated stations that made up the el system this station was rather simple,  A narrow ledge was attached to the second floor of an existing building with a platform cantilevered out over the sidewalk. On April 20, 1871 the Ninth Avenue line was resurrected as the New York Elevated Company and they overhauled the line with new equipment including steam engines to pull passenger cars. Rufus Gilbert, a pioneer in modern rapid transit formed the Gilbert Company (later renamed The Metropolitan Elevated Railway Company) to build elevated railroads on the east and west sides of Manhattan.
With street space limited, the easiest way to expand the number of tracks was to build express tracks over the local tracks. The Third Avenue Elevated followed soon after, opening August 26, 1878 and the final line in Manhattan, the Second Avenue Elevated began service March 2, 1880.
At the turn-of-the-century Sixth Avenue was a main shopping district of New York called “Ladies Mile. The city took over control of the lines and in 1938 the Sixth Avenue Elevated was shut down and razed. The last trains on Third Avenue Elevated ran May 13, 1955.  By the summer the razing of the Third Avenue el had begun.
The building with the dome at the southern end of Herald Square is the Union Dime Savings Bank. The principal designer at James Corner Field Operations, a New York-based landscape architecture and urban design firm, Corner focuses on landscape urbanism, an amalgamation of a wide range of disciplines including landscape architecture, ecology, and urban design. At the square site up 10th Avenue, we created a large seating venue with a stage and window looking out onto the street. These are very traditional landscape architectural tropes: journeys around the garden, journeys through a landscape. The project never progressed any further and the powers that be decided that 58th was too close to neighboring Garfield station. Instead of waiting for the shuttle, walk on over to the E train or G train (which by the way has been shut down on weekends too for repairs, but no one complains much since they don’t want to go to Brooklyn). The photographs of Joel Sternfeld (fine-art color photography and publisher of Walking the High Line (2002), an anthology focusing on the railway) had a remarkable influence in allowing people to view this thing as something with potential rather than something to be skeptical of.

Its not about static shots, its about how moving through the city in an ambulant way allows interesting vistas and panoramas to unfold. Or the sundeck on 14th Street--that's where the High Line takes a bend--you get great views southwest across the river. In many ways, the High Line is remarkably traditional, but it's also so much more intense because of its very linear landscape. Since the subway system is a 24 hour system, there has to be times it gets shut down so work can be done. In a sense, the entire structure was engineered to be self-sustaining, but as the Sternfeld photos show, the derelict railway was alive long before we arrived.An early model of the High Line.
The paths are designed to force people to people slow down, to stroll, to meander, so they're immersed in a certain rail-bed landscape of remarkable textures and colors and unusual forms. The High Line was designed as a living system.
It's these punctual places--the 10th Avenue square, the giant sun lawn in Section 2, and the flyover steel catwalk that slices across 18th Street--it's really these episode places that become a stage set for social life to play out.Pedestrians take in the city lights.
Maybe the MTA should operate like the Metro in DC and the subway system in Rome which shut down every evening. There are a whole slew of factors that mean, as a designer of a living space, you not only have to amplify existing conditions, but be creative and respond to what you find. You don't just fly in as a superstar designer and do your own thing.
I think my work is always unique because it's always influenced and informed by the site we're working on.
