The track gauge also dictates the size of the entire layout, because you must be careful not to make the curves so tight that the rolling stock has difficulty following them. Turnouts are driven by a capacitor pulse that ensures sufficient energy for the short time needed to set the turnout.
Electrically, this layout is run on "separate half-wave pulse modulated DC", which means I can run two engines (each equipped with a diode inside) independently, provided they run in different directions.
Covering the plywood supports with cardboard and thick aluminum foil gave me a good base for the landscape. Note that there are two small "hills" on top of the large hill - these are covers for openings that enable me to rescue a train that might have derailed in the tunnels! Painting with acrylics (animation cel paint, actually!) mixed with a little sawdust gave me the right texture. For landscaping, more sawdust, natural stones and lichen which I colored in a mixture of water color and glycerine.
I made trees by twisting together thin, soft copper wire for roots, trunks and branches, painted them brown, and then glued colored sawdust to the branches as foliage. There are a few "Hall-element" magnetic transducers under the track, and small magnets under each train's first car that makes the layout automatic: The lights go red, one train stops at the station, until the other clears the 3-turnout area - then the light goes green and the first train can continue. It is interesting and challenging to photograph any miniature model - you have to know your camera equipment well, and be familiar with the pitfalls of depth of field, camera shake, etc. I prefer to use 35mm 100 ASA slide film, mostly using a macro-focusing 24-48mm wide angle zoom lens (wide angle lenses give better perspective and greater depth of field).
I have a large picture file (250 K, 600x800, high quality JPG) on a separate page, a miniature on the right. I have also shot 3-dimensional pictures of the layout, one example can be found on my 3-D page. The pictures were scanned (with a Minolta Dimage Dual scanner) from negatives taken in very weak light with a Minolta Vectis S-1 APS camera loaded with 200 ASA print film. The lighting inside the houses is simple: I used ordinary flashlight bulbs (a few each in series), and some transparent paper in the windows for diffusion.

The stated mission of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum is to preserve the heritage of railroading. Layout complexity may vary from a simple circle or oval track to realistic reproductions of real places modeled to scale. In addition to different scales, there are also different types of couplers for connecting cars, which are not compatible with each other. In H0, the Americans standardized on horn-hook or X2F couplers, though these have largely given way to working knuckle couplers which are a close approximation to the "automatic" couplers used on the prototype there and elsewhere. Engines powered by Live steam are often built in large, outdoor gauges, and are available in Gauge 1, G scale, 16 mm scale and can be found in 0 and H0. Occasionally gasoline-electric models, patterned after real diesel-electric locomotives, come up among hobbyists and companies like Pilgrim Locomotive Works have sold such locomotives. The first clockwork (spring-drive) and live steam locomotives ran until out of power, with no way for the operator to stop and restart the locomotive or vary its speed. Electricity permits control by dividing the layout into isolated blocks, where trains can be slowed or stopped by lowering or cutting power to a block. Many layout builders are choosing digital operation of their layouts rather than the more traditional DC design. In large scales, particularly for garden railways, radio control and DCC in the garden have become popular.
Many modelers pay special attention to landscaping their layout, creating a realistic looking imaginary world of their own design or modeling after an actual location, often historic. Constructing scenery involves preparing a sub-terrain using a wide variety of building materials, including (but not limited to) screen wire, a lattice of cardboard strips, or carved stacks of expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) sheets.

Note the "joystick" type engineer's control handle (wooden dart with suction cup) - quite advanced for 1954! N scale is also becoming more common, thanks to its smaller size, and is provided by several manufacturers. The scales on these gauges vary, sometimes the rolling stock is modelled on narrow-gauge prototypes, which means the scale is larger than for "ordinary" gauge prototypes.

I can park a train on the inner one of the tracks that run over the hills, or on the inner loop. I've spent many hours looking for interesting camera angles, choosing the right lens & lighting when photographing my layout.
The best lighting is natural window light or electronic flash ("bounced" via ceiling or wall) to avoid harsh shadows - sometimes using a large white cardboard as a reflector to lighten up the shadow side. However, this special camera lacks any focusing mechanism (hard to construct on a revolving-lens camera), so I had to use a close-up diopter lens, which doesn't give the best possible results - because of the rotating optics and the distortion introduced by the diopter, there is a slight horizontal smear even on those parts of the image that ought to be in perfect focus. I added the sky and corrected the colors on my Mac - the pictures originally had a very strong orange hue, due to the overhead artificial light which I dimmed to barely a glow.
The LEDs are bent on their leads to a horizontal position, and painted with silver paint on the top, to simulate the reflectors of real street lights. I would sit for hours watching the Lionel train snake through a toy village, mesmerized by the roar of the engine and the sound of the whistle — all the while eagerly waiting for my turn to operate the train.
And so when I heard that there was a museum dedicated to model railroading right here in San Diego, I was dubious.
Within minutes, I became a version of my 10-year-old self — wide-eyed, goofy-grinned, bursting with excitement.

Hornby tried to become more profitable by producing licensed train sets to increase its appeal to a younger customer. To cut production costs Bachmann immediately closed the Poole facility and moved production to China.
I built some houses from plastic "Faller" kits and a few of my own design of painted cardboard. Engines of the 5" (127 mm) gauge are usually 1:12 scale, and can often pull a train of half a dozen or more adult passengers - see below! A standard "HO"-scale layout of the functionality I wanted would have required four or five square meters of space - one third of the room! They really look much better than the molded plastic trees you can buy, and are a lot cheaper and really fun to do.
The f-stop must be as small as practically possible to get enough depth of field, so this means long exposure times with the camera on a tripod. The leads are connected to thin wires, well insulated, going through the tube (which is pushed into a drilled hole) and emerging on the underside of the the plywood base, where all connections are made. Stamps are small works of art - I spent a whole evening with a loupe, looking at the ones I bought!
I found myself just short of running from exhibit to exhibit, searching for the trains, almost giggling when they passed by. Since long ago trains are used as a medium to transport belongings and economic resources such as logs or mine products. Their involvement ranges from possession of a single train set to spending hours upon hours and large sums on a substantial and exacting models of a railroads and the scenery through which it passes, called a "layout". It is easier to fit a G scale model into a garden and keep scenery proportional to the trains. None of the popular couplers has any resemblance to the prototype three-link chains generally used on the continent. This theoretically enables modelers of British railways to substitute any other NEM362 coupler, though many Bachmann models place the coupler pocket at the wrong height.
Various manufacturers introduced slowing and stopping tracks that could trigger levers on the locomotive and allow station stops.
The electric-outline model would be supplied by the overhead wire and the other model (usually steam-outline) would be supplied by one of the running rails. Batterypower is used by many garden railway and larger scale systems because of the difficulty in obtaining reliable power supply through the rails outdoors and because the high power consumption and thus current draw of large scale garden models is more easily and safely met with rechargeable batteries. As trains began to be powered by transformers and rectifiers more sophisticated throttles appeared, and soon trains powered by AC contained mechanisms to change direction or go into neutral gear when the operator cycled the power.


The advantages to DCC are that track voltage is constant (usually in the range of 20 volts AC) and the command throttle sends a signal to small circuit cards, or decoders, hidden inside the piece of equipment which control several functions of an individual locomotive, including speed, direction of travel, lights, smoke and various sound effects. The scenery base is covered with ground cover, which may be ground foam, colored sawdust, natural lichen, or commercial scatter materials for grass and shrubbery. Well maintained trains and rolling stock will last a life-time and it isn't unusual for trains to get handed down generations. Hornby is the main company specialising in British model railways but others like Lima Marklin Peco Mainline Roco Graham Fraish and Bachmann are available. He then used his surname Hornby to as a trading name to launch a line of clockwork O gauge trains in 1920.
The railway sets based on Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends and Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express have been particularly profitable ventures. In 1968 Bachmann launched its N gauge products and in 1970 it entered the HO scale toy train market.
As demand decreased after the end of the war they decided to enter the model railway business.
Bachmann improved the model range robustness by redesigning them as they reintroducing the entire range. From this I can deduce that it must have been made pretty soon after WWII, in what later was called West Germany. This time around, I scrapped the idea of a shelf around the walls - the railroad must be protected from dust, too.
In this picture, the track is laid out for the first test run, to make sure the grades were not too steep for the tiny engines.
The original slides are of course much sharper than you can see here, since I've had to compress the pictures quite heavily when scanning & putting them on the web server (otherwise you'd fallen asleep waiting for the pictures to load). Of course, I've connected several LEDs in series, and added a suitable series resistor to keep the current around 10 mA - otherwise the LEDs would burn out.
Here are just a few examples from different countries: Isle of Man (British Commonwealth), former Chechoslovakia, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Norway, India, Germany and Burma. The prospect of spending time inside on a beautiful day staring at trains did not sound entertaining; I just didn’t understand the draw. Many are works in progress, so you’ll often find club members working on the models, always ready to chat with visitors about the project or model railroading in general.

These hobbyists, called "railway modelers" or "model railroaders", may maintain models large enough to ride on (Garden Railroading).
A fairly common alternative is to use representations of chain couplings as found on the prototype, though these require large radius curves to be used to avoid derailments.
In addition the notion of accurate models had yet to evolve and toy trains and track were crude tinplate. Three-rail systems often insulate one of the common rails on a section of track, and use a passing train to complete the circuit and activate an accessory. This allows more realistic operation in that the modeler can operate independently several locomotives on the same stretch of track. Buildings and structures can be purchased as prefab kits, or built from scratch from cardboard, balsa wood, basswood, paper, or polystyrene or other plastic. Hornby was slow to realise the potential of plastic unlike some of its competitors who could produce cheaper but still good quality products like Triang-Rovex.
Hornby decided to acquire it’s competitor Lima, an Italian model railway equipment manufacturer that had previously acquired Jouef, a French manufacturer. They started to sell British OO gauge railway layout track, wagons and other supporting items. This motorcycle toy (click to enlarge) has intriguing wind-up action: The rider stands beside the cycle, rises up on it, kick-starts, and then runs and steers the motorcycle in a circle. Modelers may collect model trains, building a landscape for the trains to pass through, or operate their own railroad in miniature. The large scale (garden variety) models are usually hand-built and powered by live steam, or diesel-hydraulic, and the engines are often powerful enough to haul dozens of human passengers.
The key is to stick to your choice once you have decided on a scale, and not mix scales in a single layout. A variation on the three-rail system, Trix Twin, allowed two trains to be independently controlled on one track, before the advent of Digital Command Control. Trees can be fabricated from materials such as Western sagebrush, candytuft, and caspia, to which adhesive and model foliage are applied; or they too can be bought ready-made from specialist manufacturers. Rail cars in cities accumulate grime from building and automobile exhaust, while cars in deserts may be subjected to sandstorms which etch or strip paint. In some cases, evidence of accidents or repairs may be added, such as dents or freshly painted replacement parts, and weathered models can be nearly indistinguishable from their prototypes when photographed appropriately. Originally the OO railway locomotives were powered by an 2 pole DC electric motor which was an unconventional choice. British made Graham Farish models is sought more by model railway collectors because it is 'older' and 'British'. After just a few years, I had to tear down the shelves when my other activities in the mid-60's (such as magic tricks, chemical experiments, photography and finally animation) required more space.A few of my friends did keep their layouts operational well into their teens and even 20's, until they too had to pack them down for storage.
However, since the pulse is very short, the coils cannot overheat (the "resting" current of 15 milliamps through the charging resistor does not generate any appreciable heat and is thus small enough to be ignored). There are also cars on the page but if you can wait a bit longer, I’ll introduce you to another site about car papercraft. A model that is weathered would not fit as many layouts as a pristine model which can be weathered by its purchaser. By 1976 Hornby was facing challenges from Palitoy and Airfix, both of which were producing high quality detailed models. In 2007 Bachmann purchased the Williams Electric Trains company, which has allowed the company to expand into the O scale market.
The company suffered at first from faults with some of its models due to its uses of impure mazac which is an alloy of Magnesium, Aluminum, Zinc and Copper similar to Zamak. New model railway enthusiast generally prefer the more robust and detailed Chinese-built models. One had his layout on a large board that he could hoist to the ceiling of his bedroom with rope and blocks. The capacitor is charged and ready for action within 2-3 seconds after a previous switching. Popular narrow-gauge scales include Sn3, HOn3 Scale and Nn3, which are the same in scale as S, HO and N except with a narrower spacing between the tracks (in these examples, a scale 3 ft (914 mm) instead of the 4 ft 8 1?2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge). Detail on the models was upgraded to make the product line more attractive to adult hobbyists. This acquisition also included the Rivarossi line of HO-scale products, also originally from Italy, and the Arnold brand of N-scale products. Because of dwindling interest in model railroading, the Brothers decided, in 1981, to sell to their manufacturer, the Chinese Kader Group.
The way to tell these two types apart is that UK built models have a yellow sticker on the ends of the box and models built in China have a white sticker on the end. If so, please email me!As you know, there are several different scales and gauges for model railroads.
This system insures effective and rapid switching of the turnout, and can be applied to other DC operated systems, too. By 1980 the market was extremely tough and Dunbee-Combex-Marx was liquidated, placing Hornby in receivership. In November 2006, Hornby Hobbies acquired Airfix and Humbrol paints for the sum of ?2.6 million.
The company name was changed to Bachmann Industries and the new owners started to expand the brand worldwide.
In 1980 Hornby became Hornby Hobbies and in 1981 a management buyout saw the company back on a sound footing.
It is also part of the strategy to take over other failing companies in Europe and put them under one single name for example the British model railway company Graham Farish.
In May 2008, Hornby announced the acquisition of Corgi Classics Limited, one of the world's oldest makers of collectable die-cast models of trucks, buses, cars and airplanes.
