I know from the past couple months you have really been busy preparing for this past week end and from what you reported it was a great success. I hope one of the people that you turned MRH forums onto will give his view of your open house. Yep time to crack open your favorite drink, sit back put your feet up and relax for a day or so before you get back to enjoying all the great work you have done and start thinking about what your next project will be. Depending on how fast I can work and if there are more railroads in my area that will be open for the tour I may skip being on the tour next year.  I want my visitors to see something new and worth the long drive! Now, you will wonder what there is to criticize about the size, especially as the GoPro Hero is small as a cigarette pack. The JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 is the perfect model train camera for people with some claim to perfection.
Then there are three key features: First, the JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 offers a super-slow motion. One advantage of the JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 is the relatively short focusing distance, which is especially needed when using the camera as a model train camera. Not a big fan of these videos, my personal preference is to get a little more of sounding scean.
The iPhone records in HiDef, and the quality is quite good - the best I've seen for a model railroad sized camera (at least HO). No doubt the iCar is clunky - it has to be to fit carry an iPhone keep it within the NMRA gauge profile. The $10 camera sounds intriguing - can you give some search terms I can use to look for it? Any spy or nanny cam that broadcasts a signal thru radio waves will have interference because the engine as it rolls along causes it as the wheels loose contact with the rails.
The shot you see in my video is taken from the camera mounted on a flatcar being pushed ahead of the engine. Since those two pics were taken, I've bent the antenna down so that it clears an overpass that is temporarily over the tracks at one location. The designs of all three TrainCams (Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3) are discussed in detail below.
The camera used for the Model 1 TrainCam was the Synapse Network Xtreme Upgrade Mini Wireless Color Camera, Model 203CA. The Model 1 TrainCam was originally checked out on the test track using a much-too-large 9-volt battery, a much-too-small gondola, and far-too-many rubber bands (photo below). The first order of business was to do away with that huge power connector on the camera (photos above and below). Because I couldn't account for the third wire, I decided to carefully cut away the connector's housing material to determine how the wires were attached to the connector pins. The next step in the TrainCam project was to select an appropriate freight car to hold the camera equipment and the new battery pack. The final step in the assembly process was to hide the battery and power connector in a container.
With its batteries fully charged, the TrainCam was ready to provide the test track's operator with an engineer's view of the layout. After months of mediocre results from the Model 1 camera, advances in wireless camera technology made it appropriate to upgrade the TrainCam. Compared to the Model 1 camera, the Model 2 camera transmits a much stronger signal, the lens is better, the picture quality is better, and the antenna protrudes from the top (where it belongs), rather than from the side. The battery charger that came with the custom battery was a simple 12 VDC, 50 ma power adapter.
The solution to the problem was to replace the 12 VDC adapter with a constant-current battery charger that was customized for an 8.4-volt, 120 mah, NiMH battery.
Since the beginning of the TrainCam project, I realized that a new design would be required before the camera could be used for remote operations over the Internet. A search of the Internet provided some very interesting TrainCam designs, most of which might work well in a large layout; however, they probably would not work very well in a coffee table layout where everything is compressed.


To further reduce the chance of derailment, the wiring from the swiveling camera to the battery should be extremely flexible. The overall length of the new TrainCam car should be about the same as the old TrainCam car. Rather than rebuild the Model 2 TrainCam, I decided to use all new parts for the Model 3 TrainCam. A lever protruding from the platform assembly is linked to a lever that is attached to the front trucks of the TrainCam car.
The same photo shows the short antenna protruding from the camera, and it also shows the super-flexible wire connecting the camera to the battery wiring. To address the high center of gravity and the wobble issues, the camera platform was redesigned and the front trucks were replaced. As expected, the combination of the longer truck assembly and lower camera platform significantly improved camera stability. The differences between the Model 2 and Model 3 TrainCams is clearly illustrated in the comparison photo below. I'm sure it will be a great review because you did some really fine modeling with your expansion and you put a lot of yourself into your weekend open house. Highly Recommended is the GoPro HD Hero product line when it comes to shots on the bike, from the car, on the helmet or when skiing or flying.
But when you try to make cab rides on a model railroad layout, the GoPro Hero 3+ can't focus objects that are still in front of the camera.
They call it JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 and it is small as a matchbox, has a built-in display, recording sound and image in broadcast quality, can be operated via WiFi and offers a minimum focusing distance from 12 cm. The JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 has a CMOS image sensor with approximately 8 megapixels and also a built-in display on which the camera image can be optimally set. In the camera menu the TV system and the frame rate (fps) can be set: Video recordings are possible with 1920 x 1080 pixels at 60 fps and 30 fps and with 1280 x 720 pixels at 60 fps and 30 fps.
Recordings will be made internally with 120 fps on the imaging chip and stored as a slow motion recording at 30 fps. The radio cameras seem to suffer from interference so I was thinking there must be a small self contained camera the I could put on a flar car.
Areas requiring serious repackaging were identified and corrected (no more rubber bands), and a custom-designed 7-cell NiMH battery replaced the Duracell behemoth. One might think that the easy way to eliminate the connector would be to cut it off, and then reattach the two camera power wires to something smaller. My son suggested that the container should have the NASA logo, since the camera looks like some sort of Hubble Space Telescope replacement.
It was not an elegant solution, but I figured it would suffice for the test track—assuming that the copper didn't interfere with the camera's antenna.
The existing TrainCam (Model 2) did not provide a view of the track ahead when the train is rounding a curve. I selected super-flexible #32 wire (18 strands of #44 wire) with extra-limp insulation for this application. The linkage is designed so that when the front trucks turn, the camera platform turns even further in the same direction.
In the photo below is the TrainCam negotiating one of the many sharp curves in the new coffee table layout. The shorter antenna and swiveling camera platform allow the Model 3 camera to look into the curves.
To further improve camera stability, it may be useful to add some friction or drag to the camera platform.
But there are two limitations, what the GoPro Hero cameras fail: On the one hand, this is the minimum focusing distance of the lens and on the other hand the size. These cameras are very cheap and provide a low quality when you start making first experiences.
The lens with it's good aperture of F 2.4 is perfect for making video footage of a model railway at daylight or at neon lighting.


In addition, the camera can still record video with 1280 x 960 pixels at 30 fps and with 848 x 480 pixels at 30 fps. If the camera is overexposing the picture quality due to the automatic, this failure can be regulated in the camera menu.
It would need to be fairly small to fit under bridges and tunnels yet provide a good quality video.
Image quality left a lot to be desired, and it was almost impossible to stabilize the picture. That's because the camera looks straight ahead at all times, even though the train is turning left or right. Note also that small high-intensity LED headlights have been added below the Model 3 camera. And, it's a problem using the GoPro at HO Scale or N Scale because the GoPro is built too wide to mount it on a locomotive. If making videos outdoor, there is no difference between the JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 and the famous GoPro Hero 3+. Video data is stored in *.mp4 file format that can be imported and processed by any video editing program. Second, the camera has a built-in WiFi hotspot, it sends the video via WiFi and can be operated from a distance. There are different modes for white balance and for exposure (brightness) that can be set manually.
Although cheap pinhole or keychain cameras serve a similar purpose, but they are miles and even light years away from the image and video quality of the JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 (sensitivity to light).
The camera is neat too because you don't have to worry about interference or size of the camera.
The lights can be shut off by removing the black jumper that is located between the two LEDs. The camera needs almost the width of two tracks, so that recordings of cab passenger rides are impossible over the entire length of a model train track, especially if you would like to record platforms, tunnels or trains passing by. The foto and video image can be set from +6 to +1 overexposed (brighter) or from -6 to -1 underexposed (blacked). In addition, the JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 can be used for all other video purposes; even as a camcorder or as a camera for "special" recording situations, the JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 is ideal due its tiny size of 74 mm length, 53 mm height and 35 mm in depth. It may give a clear picture of where the TrainCam will end up if there is something on the track ahead, but it won't show you what's on the track until it's too late. The JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 can capture images in *.jpg file format with the size of 4608 x 3456 pixels (interpolated) and 3264 x 2448 (native). Thirdly, the camera has two standard tripod mount threads on the bottom and on the side; thus it is possible to screw the JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 directly to a tripod to use it as a regular video or photo camera. The inputs to the regulator are 9 VDC unregulated and ground, both coming from the formerly attached power connector.
And who has built for years a model railway with much effort and with hard work, will not be satisfied with bad, faded or flickering video images. And, the camera offers a 5x digital zoom, so that the typical wide-angle or fish-eye effect on action cameras can be minimized completely.
And people like Pilentum, who want to get the best results of existing camera technology, need an action camera recording with 1920 x 1080 pixels and 50 frames per second (Full-HD).
