The Whale Trail is not a new trail, having been around since about 2002, but it has become extremely popular. Combine your trip to South Africa with a relaxing, revitalising visit to a health spa and experience Africa at it's finest. We ask 30 local South Africans to share their favourite holiday destinations and getaways with us. As much as your kids will tell you they can’t wait for the school holidays, the words "I’m bored" inevitably cross their lips.
Some weeks ago my friend Connor invited me to join him for a visit to the Pietermaritzburg Model Engineering Society (PMES) and since I had never visited the venue before I decided to take him up on his offer. After using various venues, including members’ homes for meetings, it was decided that a permanent site had to be found at which a miniature train track could be laid and normal club activities could take place.
After an extensive amount of work, which included the levelling of what was in effect a series of dongas and heaps of builders’ rubble, 250m of track was laid and steam train rides started on the first Sunday of November 1987.
In 2001, a third section of track was built increasing the overall length of the track to just under a kilometre. Both adults and children can enjoy a ride on anyone of four locomotives which are powered either by steam or by diesel fuel and after going for two flips around the near one kilometre track I could see why this venue has become so popular for visitors both young and old. The PMES is a unique venue that offers families a safe and affordable (each ride costs just R5) way to have fun together while appreciating the beauty of nature and enjoying the ingenuity of man at the same time. Take the kids to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday 7 for a ride around the Model Engineering Society’s beautiful miniature railway circuit. The Pietermaritzburg Model Engineering Society invites you to enjoy a day out with them – take a picnic or a braai to their beautiful park, and let the kids have a ride around their miniature railway circuit, hauled by steam and diesel locomotives.
The grounds are large, well-kept, and secure, allowing the children the opportunity to play outdoor games, with plenty of parking. At the Pietermaritzburg Model Engineering Society our primary objective is to foster an interest in engineering by building miniature replicas of locomotives, stationary engines, internal combustion engines, hot air engines, machine tools, and any other engineering related projects to the original working specifications. We have a running day every first Sunday of the month when members of the public can buy tickets to enjoy a ride around the miniature railway circuit, hauled by steam and 'diesel' locomotives.

On the first weekend of August each year we host our Wings, Wheels, and Whistles hobbies exhibition, this is the only time that we charge a small entrance fee. In addition we run children's birthday parties every Saturday and sometimes during the week when a miniature train pulled by a diesel locomotive provides rides for all. The gates will be opened half an hour before the appointed time, and will be closed half an hour after the party.

Why not take a train ride with a difference at the Model Engineering Society in Bisley, Pietermaritzburg. When you arrive you will be given a tour of the premises and get to take a good look at the miniature locomotives and the impressive tracks running through the grounds.
Choose which trains you want to ride on, you have a choice of four, all of which resemble old fashion steam trains from the olden days.

Renowned English sea navigator Sir Francis Drake once referred to Cape Town as the fairest cape in the world. Located in the quiet middle class suburb of Bisley in Pietermaritzburg, the Model Engineering Society was founded way back in 1922, but went through an extensive period of inactivity before being resurrected in the 1970s. After an intensive search for a suitable venue the present site at 78 Rudling Road was identified culminating in the signing of a 25-year lease with the Pietermaritzburg City Council in 1985.
This portion of track is known as the “inner circuit” and was followed nine years later by the establishment of the “outer circuit” which consisted of 450m of track laid over a period of just four months.
Not only did it herald the building of a second track it also resulted in the establishment of a foot bridge and a ticket office culminating in the hosting of the National Model Engineering Society Meet, which was an overwhelming success.

The PMES’ grounds, track and facilities rank amongst the best in the world and they not only aim to keep it this way, but also hope to continue making improvements and additions.
The lawns were all neatly trimmed and there was plenty of shade under which to sit and relax and enjoy a cool drink or two.
Although the rides are by no means exhilarating they are unquestionably interesting as the trains negotiate sharp bends, cross bridges (one of which is nine metres long) and travel through tunnels.
The attention to detail found in the locomotives as well as ‘Old Clem’ (the resident steam powered tractor) has to be seen to be appreciated and I can only wonder how long it must have taken their builders to shape them into the finished products they are today.
Special offers and general event posts are also found here as they are generally a team effort.
The party would typically run for two hours in the morning or afternoon, 10h00 to 12h00 or 14h00 to 16h00.
The various tracks are roughly 1 kilometer in length and include sharp bends, tunnels and bridges (the longest bridge being 9 meters in length).
There are steam powered and diesel powered trains that you can hop aboard on and enjoy a fun ride through this exceptionally beautiful area. The proceeds of the meet allowed the PMES to construct a tunnel which is probably the most appealing feature of the ride for passengers both old and young. But of course the real attraction were the immaculately turned out miniature locomotives which looked liked mini replicas of the massive steam trains of yesteryear. With each locomotive clearly distinguishable from another everyone had their favourites and at times it was difficult to discern who was having more fun, the children or their parents.
