Turn back the clock about 26 years - I was working for the Milwaukee Road in Kansas City, as one of the tower operators at West Wye Tower. These levers operated the corresponding switch or signal immediately if it was safe to do so.


The operator would first rotate the switch lever for switch 35 to the 'R' for reverse position. There would be a short delay of 1-2 minutes while the switch machine moved the turnout to the reverse position.
Then the yellow R light would illuminate, telling the operator that the turnout was lined and locked for the diverging route. This was feedback for the operator, to tell them that 36R was clear and that the train could move up to Freight Line Junction. While signal 36R was cleared or there was a train standing on the track, switch 35 would remain locked.
Next, the operator would set the lever for switch 53 to the 'R' position to reverse the turnout. After 53 indicated 'R', then the operator could clear Signal 52R by moving the lever for signal 54 to the 'R' position. When the train passed signal 36R, the track circuit light would illuminate and signal 36R would 'drop' to stop.
This would be shown on the panel by the red lamp illuminating and the green lamp extinguishing. The signal could not be cleared, nor would changing the signal lever have any effect while a train was 'in circuit'. The remote control point worked out the logic of the request and sent back confirmation (via coded message) to the CTC control panel. The logic behind the CTC panel had to perform all of the checks necessary to allow trains to proceed safely.
It should not be possible to allow a train to proceed if there was another train approaching or in front of the train. Turnouts could only be changed when there was no signal cleared and no train standing on them.

I've ridden its trackage from Cleveland to Canton, mostly during the period I when served on the car and engine crews of the MRPS. Here's a chemist's idea of thrills: watching a tanker truck of aluminum alkyl being unloaded in the middle of a Gulf Coast rainstorm. Louis (Big 4), and the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (Monon) all ran through town in the general era I model. The excursion was our introduction to how cold and snowy September could be in that country. The photograph dates back to the time when the area was served by the El Paso & Southwestern. The car had no air brakes in the source photo, but since it appears to have remained in service into the early 20th century, I added the requisite hardware. The stock car (notice the steer about to make a leap for freedom) was inherited from the AT&SF. As I did with the caboose, I ran off a new underframe (in this case, shortened by 10 scale feet) and then kit-bashed the sides and roof. The bobber combines features of the C&S and short D&RG cabooses at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden. I ripped open the parts bags to discover that a section of the platform was nowhere to be found. The SD70ACe locomotives are certified for EPA Tier 3 emissions standards, and features include radial trucks and distributed power, in addition to AC traction. Modifications at the Mayfield shop included a new, modern paint design reflecting A&M's corporate colors and renumbering to A&M road numbers 70-72. Equipped with an electronic fuel injection system, a CatA® C175 series diesel engine provides exceptional train acceleration advantages, compared to other less powerful locomotive products or older technologies, while maintaining Tier 4 emissions performance. Caterpillar, Progress Rail and EMD are the only OEMs to have designed and sold new locomotives designed to meet Tier 4 emissions standards.

When I started its construction in the early 1970s, I used Model Railroader plans that showed the car as a conventional reefer with ice hatches. The decal set came with door numbers only; as a result, I took almost 6 months to finish the model. The EMD Spirit is compliant with the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act's (PRIIA) 305-005 Next Generation locomotive specifications, and meets or exceeds all of Metrolink's requirements for procuring highly-reliable, fuel-efficient locomotives for passenger rail service. The Lone Star car evokes our stay in the Alamo City and the comforts of having (then, at least) two working breweries to tour when the heat and humidity got to us. I lettered the car with a Walthers pickle decal and Irv Schulz 125 Line dry transfers (my hands seem to have been a lot steadier in those days).
The Spirit is capable of operating at speeds of up to 125 mph, enabling it to satisfy potential increased speed requirements.
