Following the announcement, I had a 30-minute chat with Thierry Coup, senior vice president of Universal Creative and executive creative director for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley. And continuing to allow Universal Orlando visitors to embark on the same adventures that Harry Potter did, Diagon Alley represents the true beginning to those stories. Coup emphasizes that the released rendering does not depict detailed plans, but instead offers a glimpse what the area will feel like.
Ever since the stationary Hogwarts Express train was parked in front of the original Wizarding World of Harry Potter, fans have longed to actually board it and travel through Europe. Coup insists the journey will mimic that of the films, offering visual treats along the way.
Though the Hogwarts Express will be traveling through Universal’s backstage areas, Coup makes it clear that none of that will be seen, instead utilizing visual and special effects to create an immersive experience during the ride.
Coup is excited about creating the train ride, able to easily accommodate guests of all ages aboard the Hogwarts Express. Sure to be an immensely popular attraction, Universal is planning for big crowds as Coup reveals that the train will hold many passengers.
But Universal is still working out the details on how guests will be admitted to each park. Entering Diagon Alley from the Muggle side of Universal Studios Florida, guests will come across a row of London facades, hiding the wizarding world behind it. The released Diagon Alley artwork shows the famous Knight Bus that transported Harry and friends on a hair-raising ride around London. The Knight Bus was part of the grand opening of the original Wizarding World of Harry Potter 2010 at Universal Orlando. King’s Cross Station has been confirmed to be part of the London area, a place to get on and off the Hogwarts Express. Though Universal wouldn’t confirm a single establishment, they have said there will be multiple shops and a restaurant.
Another almost-definite candidate is Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, a glimpse of which is seen in the released rendering. The original Wizarding World of Harry Potter already has Ollivanders Wand Shop, a popular experience since it opened. A focal point of the released Diagon Alley artwork is the fire-breathing dragon sitting on top of Gringotts Bank, which will house the area’s main new ride. One of the few complaints about the original Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure is the size of its streets and shops. The goal is to portray Diagon Alley with the most realism possible, even if that means sacrificing some personal space. Coup says the entire Diagon Alley area will have a similar to footprint to the original Wizarding World, roughly the same overall size. Universal has learned from the successes of the first Harry Potter area and plans on Diagon Alley being even more impressive. This time around, the notoriously meticulous Harry Potter author has left more creative control in Universal’s hands, but still paying attention. In 2017, Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione took their children to Platform 9? where they boarded the train to leave for Hogwarts. In striking contrast to Britain's National Rail system, the Hogwarts Express takes the form of a large red, 4-6-0 steam engine.
The passenger carriages hold compartments set off a corridor, allowing each compartment to function as a self-contained stage within the larger train.

The Bloomsbury adult editions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone portray the Hogwarts Express as The Cavalier, specifically using a reproduction of O. As the only stations the Hogwarts Express is noted as stopping at are King's Cross and Hogsmeade it is unclear if students from Scotland, Wales and more remote parts of England (and possibly Ireland) have to make their way to and from Hogwarts via other means or have to make the trip via King's Cross.
It is possible it has other stops before reaching King's Cross, but it seems probable that the train only runs from King's Cross to Hogsmeade given that Ron and Harry lived no where near London but used King's Cross.
The fact that on average there are around one thousand students at Hogwarts each year also poses complications for the Hogwarts Express being the only method for students to reach Hogwarts. Throughout the films, the Hogwarts Express has had its iconic whistle but in the third film, a different whistle is used. In the films and books, it is suggested the staff of the train, in particular the witch with the food trolley, is able to pass through to see the driver of the train. There could also be some sort of magical "radio" or a enchanted "mirror" of a sort, where the train crew and passengers can speak through it (or see through) to the driver.
