September 11, 2012 By Claire Leave a Comment Hobbies are a valuable addition to our lives.
1)   Try Before You Buy: Often the instinct is that you cannot try a sport or hobby without first purchasing the necessary gear and supplies. 2)   Set Your Limits: Another common hobbyist trend that we see is the personality who seems to enjoy the thrill of the supply acquisition more than the actual hobby. 3)   Pay it Forward: For those who fall into the category of large amounts of unused hobby supplies, there are many options for culling it from your home. In the end, the most important thing about your hobby is that you’re enjoying yourself; so have a great time! But the hobby shops must go where the market goes, says Bruce Throne, owner of Walt’s Hobby in Syracuse, New York.

Back in my day, which means the deep Reagan era, boxes illustrated with beautiful pictures of famous fighting or racing vehicles contained nothing but sticks or bags of plastic parts. As well, we give players a spacious game room to do battle in! Custom and manufactured terrain is always available for you to use on our store tables, making sure your gaming experience is the best it can be. We realized the hobbiest needed a place to purchase these specialized items in smaller quantities without having to meet case minimums. As the years pass, the stores evolve and change, but in one form or another, we ALL need access to a good hobby store. Competition and market evolvement has resulted (unfortunately) in the demise of many. The large discount mail order companies, can offer kits, radios ,engines etc, at a price that the local stores cannot match. If the item I want is not in stock, then it can be ordered and be there in 3 days. For the car enthusiast, there is a large race track behind the store that looks super and is complete with an elevated driver stand. They give us something fun and recreational to focus on that isn’t work or other responsibilities.
For example, someone who wants to take up cycling may feel the need to get a bike, helmet, appropriate clothing, and anything else they may need before starting out. This seems to be particularly true of scrapbookers who often have enormous collections of supplies, with few finished scrapbooks.
But a hobby shop is mainly about small vehicles, and ads for the shops of my youth once filled a page of the Detroit phone book.
Throne says plastic kits have become increasingly expensive and, for the iPhone generation, passé. If you wanted to fly, race, or jump off dirt ramps in the backyard, you bought the box and some odds and ends and constructed the vehicle over many hours in the basement. Then along came the on-line web site stores, that offer further competition to the local RC store! So the local shops that have survived, must be offering excellent prices and a large selection, along with the other essential ingredient-technical advice and customer support. If the sport isn’t for them, however, this stuff ends up indefinitely taking up space in their garage. To keep this from happening, give yourself limits on how much you will buy, how much you will spend, and how often you will shop for hobby supplies. Goodwill, Salvation Army, and the other charities will accept just about anything you’ve got.  A final option is to post about the available stuff on your social media accounts. It took us only 20 minutes to peruse the tables crammed with used radio-control buggies, boats, and airplanes, and I started to despair that I wasn’t going to find what I had come for when, at last, I spotted it. My favorite was a cluttered storehouse of treasure on Woodward Avenue called Tiny Tim’s.

Most of the shops in the old Yellow Pages are history, and the few survivors sell mostly toys.
If kids don’t want to build models, what makes us think they’ll want to build real cars and ships and airliners as adults? Most of the real stores offer mail-order and on-line shopping abilities-I guess this is a part of their secrets of success! We often meet clients that while in love with the hobbies they participate in, are overwhelmed by the amount of ‘stuff’ they have collected to facilitate the hobby. Instead of purchasing first, consider renting or borrowing gear to ensure that the hobby is something you’d like to continue long term.
Make the limits firm and stick to them so that you don’t end up with excessive amounts of stuff with little time to use them.
There’s a good chance someone in your network will be interested and you can rest assured that the stuff is going to good use. The big old box, somewhat faded and shelf-worn, had nothing in it but some blueprints and a lot of sticks and sheets of balsa and plywood.
Anybody passing by in the early 1980s would have likely seen my mom sitting outside in an idling ’76 Buick Estate Wagon, waiting. After liquidating my allowance renting a lane on one of the huge slot-car tracks, I could happily disappear down the narrow aisles for hours, scrutinizing each multicolored box in the stacks that rose nearly to the ceiling, where airplanes and rockets swung on string. Through patience and craftsmanship, plus gallons of stinky cyanoacrylate superglue, the box’s contents can become a working, flying copy of a Chance Vought F4U Corsair. They pop out of the box ready to be switched on and played with by a society accustomed to electronic devices that deliver instant gratification. Initially the real stores will be limited, geographically, to Central Florida and Southern Ontario.
At $120, the price was cheap for what promised to be hundreds of hours of industrious diversion.
