Well yesterday I started construction of the swing bridge that will connect the north & south top deck sections. The purpose is to connect the north & south sections so that trains can be ran onto either side in either direction, from the helix or staging. The swing bridge will have scenery and a steel truss bridge, with a river cut running through, as this will be the first thing most will see I want it to look the part. On the flip side I also do not want to construct something that is significantly heavy, which requires monumental engineering to make it work and to fix it. The fixing mechanism at this stage to secure the swing bridge in place will be two pad bolts either side, and will also incorporate some sort of narrow shelf to ensure correct track alignment. That said, it you come up with some nice cleats on the hinge end to keep it from moving up and down and a good shelf for it to rest on at the swinging end AND you provide a platform for it to rest on while it's open, it might be a workable design. Regarding dimensional lumber and stability, dimensional lumber isn't the most stable of materials. My experience with three swing bridges shows a big problem will be keeping the abutments on either end in precise alignment. I'm already thinking that there is an even simpler solution of just having the bridge as a lift out section, would not impede the access to the layout at all, would require very little engineering, would not require much cost to install.
Your right it would lessen the protrusion of the swing bridge into the aisle, would allow the hinge mechanism to be substantially widened and therefore strengthened.
If you are planning for the lift rather than the swing type, then this may be of some help to you. The actually moment that the idea came to me, occurred this morning when I was getting my breakfast and opened one of our kitchen cupboard doors, they use a recessed hinge system that is ideally suited to creating lift up bridges for model railroad layouts.
So this morning full of beans, and a million ideas running through my head Lachlan and I went of to our favorite hardware store, Bunnings.
I then placed some temporary plywood tops onto the frame work and screwed these down, I then marked out the positions for the recessed hinges and installed these.

However the thing that would always cause me to pick up another Superior Bakery kit was the cyclone vent that protruded from the side of the building. To make the three kits different, they modified the end walls and added separate details specific to each kit. I have turned it sideways for use on a roof, upside down and right side up, doubled and tripled them together, and cut them in every form imaginable. It is industrial, but can fit into most spaces, and it does not need to be near a railroad siding, it was released without a RR loading platform.
Their mascots' names are Steamer, who wears number K-4 and whose head is shaped like a locomotive stack, and Diesel Dawg - his number is K-9. If you are having a professional electrician install the lighting (always a good idea), make sure that you have adequate AC electrical outlets around the walls and that they all work well. I don't think there is another detail part that I have used more; it is the detail part of choice when it comes to industrial models. Hopefully someone will pick up this neat little kit and make it easily available once again!
However that did little to deter L&N modelers from picking them up whenever one would become available. The circuit breakers should be able to handle as much as 20 Amps for larger scale trains with lots of accessories. A good air handling system will not only make your train room comfortable to be in, but will protect your investment from damage by extremes of temperature and humidity.
