Welcome to the new Bressingham Gardens website, which as we develop it, will offer something for everyone, opening the world of plants, and the excitement and passion of gardening. An entrance to the Dell Garden beneath a brick and Norfolk flint bridge built by Alan Bloom in 1957. In 1953, Alan Bloom, founder of the family nursery, which by that time had become one of the largest in the country growing hardy perennials, wanted to experiment with a new way of growing them in island beds. A colourful border in Foggy Bottom in high summer mixes perennials and grasses, the two groups of Monarda Violet Queen contrasting with the Golden Indian Bean Tree, Catalpa bignonioides Aurea in the background. Adrian joined the family business in 1962 and soon became keen to create his own garden, wanting to experiment with planting for year round colour using primarily conifers and heathers. The indispensable hardy Geranium Rozanne has been used by Adrian Bloom to create a blue river, flanked by the variegated, yellow flowered Heliopsis Loraine Sunshine and the scarlet vermilion Crocosmia Lucifer, shown in July.
This garden was created in 2001 from an old meadow as part of a new, more pleasing entrance to the Dell Garden. Planted with mostly north American origin plants, this is a late spectacular display of late summer colour, particularly the centre band of golden yellow Rudbeckia fulgida deamii in front of the purple heads of Joe Pye Weed, Eupatorium maculatum Gateway. In 2001 a new pathway was built connecting the Dell Garden with Foggy Bottom, cutting out the long trip through the Steam Museum, which for the previous 30 years had been used by visitors to Foggy Bottom. A striking combination in the Fragrant Garden, from back to front, Cornus alba Aurea, left centre Eryngium Big Blue, right Rosa Felicia, foreground left Dianthus Mrs.
From the first conifer and heather beds planted by Adrian Bloom in 1963, then in 1980 replanted as a shrub garden, another new, remodelled garden is emerging. Largely a hidden gem since most visitors see this Winter Garden designed by Adrian Bloom in spring, summer and autumn. Close to the entrance of the Garden Centre and Steam Museum, this garden opened in November 2006, and planted specifically with plants of winter interest. Ecologically diverse wetlands, woodlands, savannas, prairies and formal gardens in Northern Indiana. Here are some photographs of Japanese gardens, recently sent to me (by Shawn Tribe my colleague at the New Liturgical Movement). The Japanese garden embodies native values, their cultural beliefs and religious principles. In order to appreciate and understand the Japanese garden, the viewer should consider nature as a picture frame into which the garden, or the man- made work of art, is inserted. And, having been so rude about Western attempts to recreate Japanese gardens, here is one that proves me wrong! The Way of Beauty is managed, maintained, and, unless otherwise stated, written by David Clayton. A centre for contemporary and traditional art and crafts, surrounded by four acres of beautiful ponds and gardens. Along the main road from Aylsham to Cromer, you will find this lovely art and craft centre, surrounded by over four acres of ponds and gardens. The lower craft courtyard contains five working craft workshops covering garden sculpture, art, engraving, wood turning and furniture making.

In 1987 following damage from a hurricane, the site was redeveloped into over 4 acres of gardens, with island beds, borders, ponds, streams and wild areas with specimen trees set in grass. TourNorfolk is an independent tourism website and therefore does not represent the views of any official body. A paradise for gardeners with two beautiful six acre gardens, created by Alan and Adrian Bloom over many years where new features are still being developed and planned. From novice to expert, enjoy the views, the planting combinations and the plants shown in the six distinct gardens totalling over 17 acres (6 hectares) here at Bressingham in Norfolk ….. His first beds (looking much the same today) were planted in front of the family home, Bressingham Hall, and — proving successful — were soon being planted in adjacent meadows, eventually numbering 48 beds and covering six acres (2.4hectares).
It was planted primarily with many varieties of Miscanthus sinensis, a Japanese ornamental grass, and now represents the National Collection of Miscanthus for the British Isles.
This area, originally planted by Adrian Bloom in 1964-65 with trees and conifers, including five giant redwoods, Sequoiadendron giganteum, had become overgrown and almost impenetrable. This is being designed and planted with an interesting range of plants with fragrant flowers and foliage.
It mixes woody plants with brightly coloured bark such as silver birch, red and orange dogwoods as well as perennials , grasses and conifers.
On a winter’s day and even into spring, the spectacle of coloured stems of Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’, flowers of snowdrops, early bulbs, hellebores and winter-flowering heathers will lift your spirits and hopefully encourage you to consider planting your own winter-interest garden. The design of the Hitz Family Rose Garden, created by their son Richard, is based upon Audrey’s favorite board game, Scrabble.
If it is a fair overview, then it what it describes is consistent with the Christian belief that the untamed wilderness is not the perfect standard of beauty (which is what so many modern Westerners seem to believe).
This is why there is no one prototype for the Japanese garden, just as there is no one native philosophy or aesthetic. The converted brick and flints farm buildings are home to a collection of working studios, shops and a gallery. This part of the building has undergone significant rennovation and a picture board in the tea-room shows how the buildings looked before and the work in progress.
The garden is the result of a lifetime of collecting by Valerie Alston, and the size of the collection allowed her to plant in groups, for spectacular displays. The centre is open 10am to 5pm on Tuesday through to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays (closed Christmas Day to mid January). Alan, a renowned perennial plantsman, collected plants from all over Europe, ending up by 1962 with nearly 5,000 different species and varieties, making this an important as well as a beautiful historical collection. Over 500 different conifers and 100 heathers created an impact across the country, so popular did they become.
In late summer these grasses, which grow from 3ft (90cm) or less to lOft (3m) in one season, are spectacular as a backdrop to colourful summer-flowering perennials which drift among them, including a spectacular ‘river’ of Geranium ‘Rozanne’, and other innovative plantings. Now, after felling many trees ten years ago, including thirty 6Oft (18m) high Leyland cypress, Adrian is replanting with entirely North American-origin plants — now a place to stop and enjoy the spectacle as well as to pass through to Foggy Bottom. It is situated next to the picnic area, where visitors can enjoy flowers and fragrance throughout the summer.

We welcome you to bask in the scents carried on the wind, listen to the soft trickling of water flowing over granite, and enjoy the complex beauty of the rose as Audrey did. He said he had just found them and thought they were beautiful and that was his only justification for sending them.
My uninformed speculation is that they reflect a desire to create idealised rural landscapes  - a sense of what nature ought to be.
Rather, that man,  through God’s grace (for the Christian) can improve the wilderness and mould it into something closer to what it ought to be. In this way, similar to other forms of Japanese art, landscape design is constantly evolving because of the influx of mainland, namely Chinese, influences as well as the changing aesthetic tastes and values of the patrons.
Also, when observing the garden, the visitor should not distinguish the garden from its architecture. He is an artist, teacher, published writer and broadcaster who holds a permanent post as Artist-in-Residence and Lecturer in Liberal Arts at the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts. The gallery is situated up a flight of stairs and showcases work from local art and crafts-people, including pottery and pictures. Colour, size and shape have all been important factors in the design, with the aim to provide interest in all seasons.
This garden, now looked after by Alan’s son-in-law, curator Jaime Blake, will amaze you with its rolling open landscape, its colour and variety — truly a Mecca for perennial-lovers. Now a wealth of mature conifers, trees and shrubs from all over the world add a backdrop to ornamental grasses and perennials.
In this respect not dissimilar to the 18th century English landscaped gardens of designers such as Capability Brown. Buildings, therefore, are not to be thought of as unnatural aberrations but (provided they are built well) as another aspect of properly ordered nature. Gardens incorporate natural and artificial elements and thus, fuse the elements of nature and architecture. I used to ask my dad about it so often that as a joke he taught me the Latin name for it - acer palmatum dissectum atropurpureum. The Way of Beauty program, which is offered at TMC, focuses on the link between Catholic culture, with a special emphasis on art, and the liturgy. This garden continues to develop and change so there is always something new for visitors to see.
About a week later I was in the garden of a family friend who by coincidence was watering a red-leafed Japanese maple that looked just like the one at home.
The centre is surrounded by beautiful gardens, planted in 1987, including island beds, borders, ponds, streams and wild areas, with specimen trees set in grass.
