After several accidents, the Pioneer Zephyr was modified in the 1940s to add a double "Twin Headlight" assembly above the nose, and the rear observation car.The second headlight on the nose was an early version of the "Mars" light. While the Union Pacific (M-10000) and Burlington Rt's Zephyr were zipping around on Western Rails in 1934 and attracting huge attention from the public, the New Haven was quieting building a smilar train for use on the East Coast, on it's trackage between Boston and Providence. The Comet owes much to airship design as it was designed and built by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation, a consortium of the US Goodyear Corp. In a test run of of Comet in April 1935 it hit a speed of 110.5 mph which was a record for any train in New England at that time. While the Comet was built for the Boston-Providence run, it did show up on other New Haven trackage, and also was used for many excursion trips to New York City. I'd been thinking about dropping the cash on one but in looking at that photo I'm not so sure I will now.
First of all, N Scaler Randy Gordon-Gilmore (who is the foremost expert on the Budd Shovelnose Trains and who did the brass masters for the Fine-N-Scale resin kits) was consulted on the Con-Cor Zephyr project. The price of the Zephyr is higher because of Con-Cor's limited distribution and sales. A bright oscillating light enabled motorists to see the approaching train from a greater distance.Con-Cor's version of the "Twin Headlight" Zephyr will use a flashing LED that will operate in both DC and DCC mode to simulate this safety feature. A great company to do business with, Model Train Stuff is an example on  doing it right. It had an engine at either extremity so it was not necessary to turn the train at the end of each trip. In its published timetable for the run between Boston and Providence (43.8 miles) the Comet's normal schedule was only 44 minutes. Both engines operated simultaneously by a master control, and after the train completed the run, the engineer just walked to the other end of the train for the return journey. Please don't rag on the above pictured model - it's only a pre-production sample (and probably HO to boot).

Next, for that money you would expect the coating to be correct, a shiny, mirror finish rather than dull, greyishness. Considering the train set ended its career in a somewhat de-skirted state, it would be nice to have that option.
Before it's retirement the train had the skirts (NOT belly pans) removed from ALL of its TRUCKS (except the first truck), which is why I was asking about the model's skirts on the trucks, not the belly pans.
But since that time several years elapsed and it appears that the "new" bodies have shrunk again!
