Monster blizzard slams NYC: MTA subways, commuter trains to shut down as city prepares for the worst a€?Get off the roads, get off the streets, get off the sidewalks,a€™ de Blasio said during a press conference on blizzard moving to shut down New York City and much of the Northeast.
New York City was socked by a potentially historic blizzard Monday that slowed the city to a crawl and threatened to bury it beneath two feet of snow. As 8 million-plus New Yorkers braced for the worst of the wintery wallop, Mayor de Blasio ordered everybody except emergency personnel off the streets starting at 11 p.m. Police will also be on the lookout for stranded vehicles and are also under orders to transport any homeless person they encounter to a shelter.
De Blasio also warned that any operator of a a€?for hire vehiclea€? caught taking advantage of the weather to squeeze commuters will be prosecuted.
As de Blasio was addressing the city, Uber said it would cap price surges during the storm in accordance with an agreement with the state attorney general.
The Sanitation Department said it was ready for whatever Mother Nature threw at it, with 2,400 workers on 12-hour shifts to clear snow from some 6,000 miles of road. The city has already dispatched 500 early salt spreaders, stockpiled 255,000 tons of salt and deployed 2,300 snowplows. Another 4,200 plows from independent contractors will also be dispatched if needed, officials said. Also, the city has also reinforced its ranks by hiring hundreds of day laborers to help with the shoveling. The Fire Department has 500 extra firefighters working through the storm and added 40% more ambulances just in case.
As a precaution, the city Office of Emergency Management has called the National Guard to provide more emergency vehicles if needed.
Justice will be delayed for at least a day as the courts in New York City were ordered closed Tuesday.
So far, there are no plans to shut down the New York Stock Exchange or the two other major exchanges in the city because of the storms.
But there were no fat ladies a€” or anybody else a€” singing at the Metropolitan Opera, which canceled its Monday performances. Meanwhile, New Yorkers crowded grocery stores and bodegas to buy last-minute supplies so they could ride out the storm. Up in The Bronx, building super Juan Chavez and his shovel struggled to keep up with the snow. More than 1,400 flights in and out of the metro areaa€™s three major airports were scrubbed Monday morning, trapping hundreds of travelers who had hoped to escape the storm. PATH train service will also run on a weekend schedule, meaning that trains will run every 15 minutes starting about 9 p.m.
President Obama was in India when he was briefed on the monster storm, but White House officials have been in constant contact with state officials a€?up and down the Eastern seaboard,a€? spokesman Josh Earnest said. The blizzard warning was issued for a 250-mile stretch of the Northeast, stretching all the way from Philadelphia past Boston and up the Maine coast. We will begin our tour of New Jersey Transit's Morris and Essex lines at the junction with the Northeast Corridor line, known as the "Midtown Direct" connection. Leaving the Northeast Corridor line, the three-track main line parallels Interstate 280 on the north side and the Northeast Corridor line to the south.

A New York Central T-motor leads an afternoon train into Ardsley Heights, on Ken Lawrence's free-lanced Westchester Northern Railroad. The New York Central's Electric Division stretched from Grand Central Terminal some twenty miles north into suburban Westchester County. Ken Lawrence is a native of Yonkers, growing up just minutes from New York City at the very tail end of the trolley era in Westchester County.
The Glenwood Lake Mobilgas station was scratchbuilt from styrene to fit into an existing area near the station. Kurt's Coffee Shop and Country Music is a Blair Line General Store kit, and is typical of roadside establishments that could be found all over Westchester County at mid-century. Passengers prepare to cross over as New York Central T-motor 275 eases its train into Ardsley Heights. This MU baggage-RPO was a fun project, but deviates somewhat from the prototype in the end roofline, sides, door sizes and trucks. As Ken transitions his layout from New Haven to New York Central equipment, some new pieces of rolling stock were added to the roster in 2009. He said people will be subject to summons or arrest if they are out on the street past 11 p.m.
Cuomo declared a state of emergency and announced that subway and train service would be curtailed after the evening commute wrapped up. Martin, who heads The Broadway League, said the group had not yet decided whether the shows will go on Tuesday. Christie declared a state of emergency and New Jersey Transit said it would stop running trains at 8 p.m. This connection was a major project aimed at unifying NJ Transit's heavy rail system into one unified network.
Crossing the Passaic River on a two-track drawbridge, we spot the Newark Bears minor league baseball team, and quickly enter Newark Broad Street, which has two low side platforms and a center bypass track. There are three tracks, with a low-level island platform serving the eastbound and center tracks and a side platform serving westbound trains.
A low island serves the center and westbound track and a low side platform serves the eastbound track.
An island serves the eastbound and and center track and a wall platform serves westbound trains. An old station house to the west of the station on the south side is now a model railroad club. There is a grade crossing on both sides of the station, and stopping trains will block the crossing. The platforms and lights are from Walthers, while the overpass was kitbashed from a Model Power kit. Comprising parts of the Hudson, Putnam, and Harlem Divisions, the railroad was elecrtified with a 600-volt direct current third rail system as part of the Grand Central Terminal project in 1910. An avid model railroader and historian, Ken has been modeling electric passenger trains for more than 25 years on his freelanced Westchester Northern Railroad. This is the Branchline Trains Woodard Depot kit, which is based on a New York Central standard design, and appropriate for many locales. Originally named the Kearny Connection, it was swiftly renamed to more properly indicate the function of the connection for marketing purposes.
There are large wooden station houses on each platform and crossunders to the main station at street level.
The platforms have been shortened and evidence of their former length is clearly visible at the ends of the platforms.

There is an indoor waiting area on both platforms, and the main station house is on the south side of the tracks.
A sign proclaims the station as "Home of the College of Saint Elizabeth." The college can be seen just to the north and east of the station. There is a crossunder as well as a ramp to the parking area to the south of the eastbound platform.
Denville is also served by Boonton line trains which connect via a single track line from the northeast. Ken's Westchester Northern is based on the New York Central's Electric Division, which served the suburbs of Westchester County from Grand Central Terminal. Electric trains ran as far north as Harmon (today Croton-Harmon) on the Hudson Division, from High Bridge to Yonkers-Getty Square on the Putnam Division, and to North White Plains on the Harlem Division.
Taking its name from a cancelled project abandoned by the New York, New Haven & Hartford, Ken's WN incorporated New Haven heavy electric locomotive and MU's with lacey, complex overhead catenary (Ken's New Haven-themed layout was featured in the March 2003 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman).
Having explored the New Haven-inspired theme for many years, Ken decided to switch gears and convert the WN to a New York Central subsidiary, complete with third rail installation! The trains that use the connection must be hauled by NJT's voltage ALP-44 (and soon ALP-46) locomotives, which can switch from 12,000 to 25,000 volts on the fly. The east end of the station is partially in an arched tunnel due to the street passing overhead. This is a modern building with marble walls, lots of glass and a 45-degree angle glass skylight. Steam (and later diesel) took over at Harmon and North White Plains for trains traveling further.
Running from Nepperhan Manor (inspired by downtown Yonkers), through Ardsley Heights and Glenwood Lake, the line ends at an underground terminal in Kensington (based on White Plains).
New equipment was added to the roster, including heavyweight MU coaches based on Branchline Trains popular Pullman kits (see the March 2007 RMC). This simple modification not only allowed the structure to fit into the area, but also made a unique model. The materials storage box car is an old undec Athearn blue-box kit painted green and lettered for the Westchester Northern. The rest of the Morris & Essex is served by electric multiple unit and even diesel-hauled locomotive trains.
South Orange is next, with a low island serving the center and westbound track and a low side platform serving eastbound trains.
This station serves as the terminal of some local trains from Hoboken, as well as non-through service from the Gladstone branch. Electric trains from Hoboken and New York must terminate here, however the diesel Boonton line trains continue to Hackettstown.
The platform and lights are also scratchbuilt, but salvaged from his earlier New Haven-themed layout. The north side had a station house, which is now the home of the Short Hills Historical Society.
